On Friday, the IOC decide which city should host the 2008 Olympic Games. The main contenders are: Beijing, Paris, and Toronto; Istanbul and Osaka are also competing for the Games.
At the moment, Beijing looks the most likely to win the bid though there is widespread criticism of the IOC awarding them the Games given their human rights record.
Who do you want to host the 2008 Olympic Games?

I read how Paris is planning to have the Beach Volleyball underneath the Eiffel Tower in the surrounding parkland so that would be cool to see! :)
They are also going to have the marathon go past the Arc d'Triumph (sp?) and Cathedral of Notre Dame.
For scenery, Paris would definitely be the pick of them! :)

Osaka and Istanbul don't have a snowflakes chance in hell of winning - why do cities like Istanbul continue to waste their taxpayers money when it's clear the IOC is never going to award the Olympics to them?

Toronto no, North American cities shouldn't receive an Olympics for at least 20 more years after the debacle at Atlanta (probably the only city to worsen their reputation by hosting the games).

Beijing, well the positives are it may open up their society to greater scrutiny and force them to improve their human rights records. It would also be in a similar time zone to us, which would be a massive bonus.

However no country with their absymal record in human rights deserves the Olympics, at least not for another 20 years. At Berlin in 1936 and Moscow in 1980, the Olympics were used as nothing more than a front for propoganda from the ruling authorities, I just hope the same doesn't happen in China.

Paris, against it is it's already hosted the Olympics twice, the 2004 Olympics are in Europe as well. But in terms of scenery it would be impossible to match. I hope Paris wins, but I think Beijing will get it.

I think Beijing will win it too.

I was watching a program on CNN today about the candidate cities, and it was talking about Chinas Human Rights record, but then they said the selectors weren't looking at previous records. They were looking at if the city could manage it.

Who knows. I wouldn't mind where it is held, so long as they don't have as much troubles as Athens are having. By the way whats the update on them?

Anyway i guess we'll soon find out who the winner is.

Beijing would be great for time zone obviously.

Re human rights, I have been thinking about this a lot lately. Should the Olympics be a political tool for dealing with things like Chinese human rights record? And even if so, what will be the better outcome--to give the games, or not.

On balance, I think that it will do more good for Beijing to get the games, and the spotlight on them that will result. If we're really against China b/c of human rights, we should exclude them from the WTO, not the IOC.

yeah well said.

By the way, congratulations on hitting the triple figures. 1-0-0.

I'll be biased and say Toronto, cause it's the only one of these cities that I've been to and I loved it there.

Having said that ----- PARIS - OUI! That would be great :D

My head says Bejing will get it though - While Juan is still in control (not much longer though), the politics in the IOC will win it for China.

Cheers. Sadly I posted my 100th in the Carlton board so it will probably never be read by anybody.

The decision will be announced by Mr. Samarach at 3.30 London time (sorry I can't give you our time, but I was watching BBC News channel) in Moscow. So just add how ever many hours we are ahead by, and you will have the time.

Ahh Oui, Paris. That would be my choice. But they'll probably give it to Beijing, despite all the controversy.

Wilko - on the official IOC site it says they are going to announce it at 2.30pm UK time (maybe they brought it forward or they got it wrong), but anyway thats 10.30pm WA time, and half past midnight over east... so you can wake up tomorrow morning and see if there are fireworks in Beijing or tears.

Uk are on daylight saving time at the moment so you're both right: 2.30 GMT and 3.30 current London time. So, yes, it's 10.30 WA time and 12.30 EST.
