AFL Club
St Kilda
Because yesterday was crazy, here's the first for this year.

10/9/2015

-Long time reader Canadian Saint joins the forum with a terrific first post. Page 829
-Parish or Mathieson? Parish or Mathieson?! Shades of Petracca vs Draft picks last year. Agreement from all that Trout will pick the best player
-StSignifcant also joins, a great first post on p829.
-Discussion on Bailey Rice. Reminders that Sam McClure and BS have said we are in front in the race to secure his services.
-Delusion from opposition supporters as they believe they can grab our first pick in a straight swap for Carlisle - more accurate beliefs from this board that they've stolen Hirds stash.
-Jay Clark writes a piece in the Hun about Essendon asking for Billings in a Carlisle trade. Seems Dons fans aren't the only ones with access to James' stash.
-Thread stops to laugh at Essendon, not only for their awful list, their board's multiple stuff ups, their off field dramas, their coaching saga or their multiple 100+ point losses, but this time for their idiotic trade demands.
-Belief that because the usual crazy Essendon trade offer linked Carlisle with St Kilda, and not Carlton, we are ahead
-Reliable posters confirm that belief, suggesting we're well ahead in attracting Carlisle's services
-Rumours that 2 Swans have some off-field going ons... So that's the Bloods culture they go on about
-Thread stops to fawn over Josh Kelly once again
-The Footy Show reports Cam McCarthy Requested a trade back to WA.
-Every man and his dog at GWS slam Barrett, say that McCarthy is happy at GWS, the final slam to 'Purple' being Toby Greene posting an Instagram photo, saying 'F off purple'. Greene takes over as the AFL's most popular player.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 11. 11/9/2015

  • Some suggestions that we should involve our first round pick for Jake Carlisle. It seems people have forgotten we are in fact dealing with Essendon Football Club, and not some everyday, respectable football club.
  • What about Carlisle's attitude? Very valuable suggestion from ARR that Richo coached Carlisle in 2010 and would be a great judge of his character.
  • Prospect of Nathan Freeman joining St Kilda brought up by 2 respectable posters.
  • The Herald "we read BigFooty" Sun runs a story of St Kilda emerging as a potential suitor for Freeman.
  • Hickeys name brought up in the thread once again, it must be written into the BF rules that a day cannot pass without this board mentioning trading Hickey ;)
  • O'Meara? Jaeger bought property in St Kilda and will consider a move to Victoria in 2016, when he comes OOC. Very interested in business future. Are his knees made of Jelly? Brett Anderson did once mention we had preliminary interest.
  • Speaking of Jelly, the daily 'We Want Jelly Kelly' bandwagon emerges, seemingly from nowhere, just to profess their love of Jelly.
  • GWS release statement. Along the lines of "Cam McCarthy has requested a trade. We won't trade him". How can St Kilda get in on this trading action? Lachie Weller?
  • James Aish. What's he worth? Where is he headed?
  • Brian dropping his now daily bombshells, this time it's that Markworth, Simpkin, Saad, Siposs and White are to be delisted. Ross will not be traded.

i dont disagree, if the right player is there we would do it... but aish... come on... thats before you look at the risk of wasting the currency we have next trade period when we will be pushing harder for more elite talent...

just doesnt add up at all

next years draft will be better IMO, the top end in setton from WA already looks better than whats on offer now. i dont know if it will be a super draft but i do think it will be better
Yes next year's draft is extremely likely to be stronger, but that's more in a depth sense, when speaking of our first round picks we should only concern ourselves with the top end of talent. How many of the 2016 crop showed as much as Tucker, Parish and Mathieson did in their bottom-age years? Petrevski-Seton, yes, but he'll be gone well before our first pick. Ainsworth was an All Australian but faced very poor opposition, Parish, Tucker and Mathieson were All Australians and starred in very good competitions in a very deep draft year. Faced with a decision of losing our first this year and our first next year, I would choose our first next year (must also factor in that keeping our 1st this year will likely mean a better performance next year, especially if we pick Mathieson.

It must also be factored in that next year's draft will be heavily affected by Academy picks, potentially more so than this year. Allison and Macraedie look like top 10 selections and might push us back 2 more picks, Sproule, Setterfield and Byrne look strong and could burst onto the scene next year and there might be a Matt Kennedy come from nowhere.

Trout's to do list ....

Carlisle, Aish, Freeman, Kelly, Tomlinson ....
.... Plowman, Treloar, Talia, Redden ....
Nice to have pick 5, I was told today we rate our top 5 a long way ahead of the next group of people, and Schache isn't in our top 5(Which if you read my comments on him weeks ago isn't that surprising).
Edit: This year has pretty well played out how we predicted it would be, full of elite mids so the Paddy decision was the correct one.
Imagine if we didn't take him and we're now picking pick 5? Doh!

When do reckon Carlisle nominates a club Ghost? Same question for Aish if he does request a trade.

I think Carlisle would know which club he wants to play for next year, can't blame his manager for trying to squeeze best contract possible for his client. I'd say an announcement from the Carlisle camp is close.
Aish has been linked to Pies for a long while now, I thought a while back they were close to certainties, now there's another club that's very much in the mix, watch this space.

I like him but we don't improve our list without potentially giving up a player like Ross. With Armitage, Dunstan, Acres, Weller on the inside we could afford to let him go, particularly if he was open to a move.

Out of all the kids we have, Ross is the most expendable IMO, prefers to handball every time instead of kick - drives me bonkers
But realistically if we keep pick 5 then he falls out of the 22 and i can live with him winning a bnf at another club as the aim is to get our list better and if moving Ross on gets me Carlisle then let me sign.

BS said that was on the table about 20 pages ago.

There's a lot of posters here who are missing the most pertinent messages and offering up their own panic-sticken ideas as near certainties.

To MGhost, BS and S#4, appreciate your info and informed opinions, even if they dont all turn out to be accurate, you've got a lot of credits in the bank. I wish others could pay a bit more attention and calm down a bit.
Saints are aggressive in trade options according to those who are on the inside

mid October is along way away sadly

you boys may rack up the 1st 5,000 page thread by then

Alright i want to answer these two at the same time, firstly i dont think any of our mail is wrong(We generally flick each other the info hours before we post and 9/10 times someone has heard the same whispers) Now between the 3 of us we would hear the same info from different people..

Right now its crazy and that's were Toxic is right. I generally believed we were done with Bennell and now im hearing we are sniffing again yet on the same hand im hearing AIsh to the saints is looking better and better by the day and yet we are only mid September!
people shouldn't panic as right now our big 5 would be Carlisle, Aish, Freeman, Bennell and the draft.

I believe we will get Carlisle and im starting to think Aish will be here to with Freeman. I don't know how Bennell fits in but they didn't say no when quizzed about him today and im assuming a few phone calls were made to the club over the course of the day hence the article about character first from Ameet.

so all in all relax, we are a month away but as Ghost keeps telling me, this trade period could be the one we look back on and say christ that's what set us up for a flag and a prolonged tilt at it.

Rather than do a summary, I've decided to pick a couple of posts from the Trade/Draft thread that I think help show us where we are at:

Thank you Rahul, Brian, Moorabbin Ghost and Stavro

20/9/15 (and what came before)

  • Rumour floated that we have our 1st pick this year and a pick next year on the table for Josh Kelly
  • Adam Tomlinson? Adam Tomlinson? The seemingly annual Tomlinson trade talk begins once again.
  • Reminder that if Collingwood trade their future first round pick, they won't be able to trade any picks in future drafts. This opens up the possibility of Aish coming to St Kilda
  • More Carlisle talk, more Dons coming onto the forum, more trade hypotheticals rejected. Whispers that the club is growing in its confidence of landing Carlisle
  • After trade talk all year featuring Shiel, Treloar, Sloane, Kelly, Bennell, Aish, Weller, Hickey, Jetta, Scharenburg and basically every opposition player under the sun, Carlisle and Freeman are firming as likely targets.
  • Freeman's hamstrings done? Mismanaged? Still strong?
  • Trade our first pick? What are the risks associated? Should we trade our first pick next year instead?
  • Very good reviews for The Draftees, a book by Emma Quayle about the AFL Draft.
  • More talk about draft prospects.

So we've had continued discussions on our trade targets:

Jake Carlisle worth picks to the value of pick #8 to #23
Nathan Freeman valued at pick #20 to #45
Lachlan Weller valued at approx pick #21 (exchange of first round picks)

Others dreamed about:

Joshua Kelly
Jaeger O'Meara

Some whispers about Eric Hipwood have also surfaced as a target in the draft

Someone quoted a post from another club board (not encouraged at all) and the inevitable indignation and off topic drivel ensued

Also a fair amount of unwarranted hostility to other clubs' posters has been noted

Joffaboy reminds me that we didn't include Rice in the previous summary
The consensus is if he nominates us, a third round pick should suffice

Together with the upgrade of Sinclair, that would leave us with one live pick

and tbarker tells us "that we won't be trading pick 5 for Carlisle but we may trade out pick 5 as part of a complex deal that gets him to us and nets us say 2x first rounders and swaps of second rounders and with the lot used on players (including a smoky player who hasn't been discussed)".

and thank you MilneMagic for the following post copied from the megathread

Interesting..

http://m.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl...by-port-adelaide/story-fnp04d70-1227551774255

"But Port could also yet lose utility Aaron Young to St Kilda, in what could form part of a three-way deal involving Toumpas and the Dees.

Young, 22, is contracted at Port next season but is open to a move.

St Kilda coach Alan Richardson is believed to have a high opinion of Young, dating back to his time at Alberton as senior assistant coach to Hinkley.

But Young has often been used as the sub and is eager for more senior opportunities. He has averaged 10 possessions in 42 games over the past four seasons."

Can we become a bit more welcoming of posters from other clubs in the megathread.
I don't care what your experiences are on other boards - this is the Saints board - it should be safe for Saints posters here, but we can welcome other posters to share our delusions / our hopes / our enthusiasm. Just maybe some of these visitors will contribute meaningfully if you let them.

Jake Carlisle set to name St Kilda as his preferred destination

JAKE Carlisle appears set to nominate St Kilda as his preferred destination.

AFL.com.au understands the uncontracted Essendon swingman could inform the Saints as early as Thursday that he will be seeking a trade to the club, having also considered a move to Carlton.

The 200cm Carlisle quit the Bombers at the end of the season after 85 games in six seasons. The 24-year-old played some excellent football in 2012 and 2013, before his form fell away and his desire to remain at the club was clearly on the wane.

New Essendon coach John Worsfold made a last-ditch attempt to keep him at the club earlier this week, however Carlisle was too far down the path towards finding a new football home, having met extensively with the Saints and Blues and having undergone medical tests.

The Saints had no comment on Wednesday night, but have previously indicated they have Carlisle pencilled in as a key defender, where they have gaping holes and which was his preferred position with the Bombers.

The NAB AFL Trade period officially commences on Monday, at which time the Saints and Bombers can step up negotiations over a deal for Carlisle.

There are widespread indications that Bailey Rice has chosen St Kilda as his destination club

Big day yesterday (16/10/15):

  • Ameet releases this update via the Saints website:

“I’ve spent much of the day with Jake Carlisle’s manager and can absolutely confirm that Jake’s sole focus remains playing for the Saints in 2016. Further, Jake has confirmed this directly to our senior coach Alan Richardson when they spoke earlier today,” Bains said.

“I can also confirm that the Essendon Football Club has an offer before them to trade Jake to the Saints. We do not intend on providing running commentary on our negotiations and out of respect for Essendon we will not be publicly discussing the specifics of the proposal.

“But what I will say is that we have Jake and his management’s support for our proposal which we all believe is fair and reasonable and would achieve a satisfactory outcome for all involved.”

  • Trade suggestion believed to be Pick 5 for Carlise, 23 and 25 leaked to the media via Bomber's mouthpiece Robbo

  • JC's Manager confirms that he is only interested in the Saints, that he believes our trade suggestion is fair and that there was never any confirmed interest for Hawthorn
