So after ruckmangate 2015 caused confusion this time last year with hitouts not being worth what they once were...
Are we seeing in preseason or have we heard from champion data any tweaks this year?

Based on nothing more than a cursory look at nab scores I'm thinking goals look to be propping up scores more than last year?

Sure eddie had a blinder... but a double ton off 5 goals and 10 contested possies??

Plus a bunch of other guys who kicked multiple goals seemed (to me anyway) to score more than a comparable 2015 performance.

Discuss?

NAB scoring is always ****ed.

id agree. just of watching the 1st round of nab, goals do seem more valuable

I think the seeming inflation of scores comes with the games being shorter. They're still giving out 3300 points amongst the 2 teams, despite there being ~20 minutes less of game time or so, even more than 20 minutes isn't it? Probably 30 minutes less of game time on average.

Anyway, if you have a look at the scores from the weekend, you'll realise that basically every single player has a higher SC than DT for this reason. Significantly higher too - This doesn't happen during the season, and it's because there's more game time in the regular season.

The reason goals seemingly count for more is that in a shorter game, there are less of them kicked and so they're more valuable/worth more points. Same thing was the case in the pre-season games last year.

For example - Eddie Betts had 16 touches and 4 goals for 77DT points against North last pre-season. His SC score was 164. Same thing happened in the weekend.

During the regular season last year Eddie had games of 17 touches, 6 goals, 123DT-134SC. I'll add another when he had 21 touches, 4 goals 130DT-154SC against North in Round 1.

I hope that makes sense

Great stuff.

Do you think it's mainly the goals that are getting adjusted due to shortened gametime or everything (kicks, handballs, etc).

Everything I reckon, but in particular the big scoring categories like contested possessions and contested marks because they're more valuable in a game that goes for less.

Far out, this info would have been nice about a month ago, not 2 days before lockout!!

It seems I've generally picked players who will benefit, but I didn't know scores were so high for marks on a lead or goals.
And I'll avoid Franklin for the -8.5 for giving away 50s.

Can a player land on half a point? do they round up or down?

Also didn't know hitouts didn't score a point.

Champion_Data Are scores more heavily scaled for game winning acts (goals, assist, intercept mark etc)?
No, scores are more heavily weighted when the game is close. Result doesn't come into it. Points are inflated late in close game (and to a lesser extent early in blowout games) regardless of whether your team won or lost.

Appreciate the response.

One thing that concerns me is the new 10m rule. -8.5pts for a 50m penalty is going to be harsh & common if umps are consistent.

Hawthorn likely to cop plenty of it early.
Thankfully not too many Hawks SC relevant

It's going to be a mess for all teams early on in the season until players adapt. Hopefully umps aren't anal about it.
