Arcade Fire are officially cooked. Thought they've been coasting since Funeral, and all of Neon Bible, The Suburbs and Reflektor were solid but pretty unspectacular save for a few incredible songs, but Everything Now was appallingly shit.

I've listened to very few albums thus year but Science Fiction was my absolute (and probably unsurprising) favourite LP. Tune-city this bad boy.

Favorite albums of '17 (no order):
Polaris - The Mortal Coil. Polaris come across as an Australian version of Architects, but they are more than just copying someone else's sound. This album is polished, well written, heavy & just plain fun. Recommended songs: The Remedy, Lucid
Make Them Suffer - Worlds Apart.
Huge step up for these guys, this album is heavy but damn it has some groove. A really cohesive record and much better than any other standard 'deathcore' (ew) fare. These guys are fantastic live as well. Rec'd songs: Uncharted, Power Overwhelming
Mutoid Man - War Moans
. Short, fast rock/metal hybrid that just makes you want to move your head and turn it up. Rec'd songs: Kiss of Death, Melt Your Mind
Tired Lion - Dumb Days
. I'm always really disappointed at how few decent rock bands there are with chick singers. These guys filling that void at the moment.
Rec'd songs: Fresh, Camp
Mastodon - Emperor of Sand
. Probably the best metal/rock band in the world over the past 15 years. This record is another ripper. Rec'd songs: Word to the Wise, Roots Remain, Sultans Curse

I really have little interest in music made in 2017, but here goes... some things still grabbed me.

01 DANDY WARHOLS - “STYGGO”
02 WEEZER - FEELS LIKE SUMMER
03 JESUS AND MARY CHAIN - AMPUTATION
04 KING GIZZARD & THE LIZARD WIZARD - RATTLESNAKE
05 THE ORWELLS - BLACK FRANCIS
06 DADDY ISSUES - IN YOUR HEAD
07 BABY IN VAIN - TO HEAVEN AND BACK
08 GRETA VAN FLEET - HIGHWAY TUNE
09 RIDE - CHARM ASSAULT
10 THEE OH SEES - ANIMATED VIOLENCE
11 ELECTRIC WIZARD - NECROMANIA

I didn't see as many gigs as normal this year. I still lucky to see some great ones.

Paul McCartney
PJ Harvey
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
The Necks
The Dixie Chicks
Justin Townes Earle
The Specials
Willie Watson
Check out Marlon Williams in March this year if you get a chance- I reckon you might dig him:

Make Them Suffer - Worlds Apart. These guys are fantastic live as well.
Yeah?

I've never been able to get into them after their earlier releases but for whatever reason Worlds Apart just clicked for me and I love it. Seeing them next weekend for the first time so this is good news.

haha same, never was able to get into their old stuff. i've seen them a few times now though & they are quite good live

I've been thinking about the songs I really enjoyed from last year, and honestly, the more I think about it, the more I ****ing hate ranking songs. Where do you start? Do you give preference to singles you couldn't stop listening to throughout the year, or do you give preference to songs that you can see yourself coming back to for years? There were singles that I couldn't stop listening to throughout the year, yet, for whatever reason, there are other particular songs that seemed to be more defining of my year. Perhaps I saw a band multiple times, or perhaps a song songs yields a memory or memories. This has probably been pretty incoherent, but I guess I'll shout out a few songs anyway.

FAVOURITE TUNES:

This, at this stage, was probably my favourite song of the year. BROCKHAMPTON dominated 2017, and they had a few other songs that I'd be tempted to list (CASH, for example, is an absolute anthem), but this song blew my mind. Glad they didn't separate the two songs, because SISTER is the build-up that NATION (the superior side and ultimate release) deserves.

Villains was pretty disappointing, and I know a lot of people hated Mark Ronson's production. I agree that the album was average, but I'm hesitant to blame Ronson, because without him, I probably wouldn't have what is now arguably my favourite QOTSA song. Stellar vocal performance from Homme on this song too.

I've been a big Good Boy fan since not long after they released their debut single. They seem to be on the verge of becoming one of the really big Queensland and Australian festival-type bands - kinda like Dune Rats, except not shit. I saw them a couple of times in the middle of this year and fell in love with this songs. I was absolutely kicking myself that I didn't record it, as at that stage it was still unreleased, and I had recorded a fair bit of their set in really good quality. They posted a Bandcamp page for their EP in October and I immediately recognised this song from its name and had a pretty torturous month waiting for its eventual release in late November. Undoubtedly worth the wait. Absolute tune.

SINGLES I COULDN'T STOP LISTENING TO

Arguably their best song and probably my favourite single of the year. Not many bands can write a song as catchy as Alvvays right now.

Probably the best Australian single of the year. They just make fantastic feel-good music. Their front man puts on a great show too.

POND - Paint Me Silver

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Xml6eYn5Eg
Much like QOTSA, a lot of people didn't like the direction Pond took on their latest record, which is understandable. I personally liked it, and I really appreciate Nick Allbrook's vocal performance on the record, and the three singles (four if you count Colder Than Ice), in particular.

Lil Uzi Vert - XO TOUR Llif3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcyFfcJbyeM
The height of trap.

Ariel Pink - Feels Like Heaven
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEN4qmE8QYY
So bloody catchy.

SONGS THAT HAVE STUCK WITH ME

The Delicates - Fantastical Mind

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RKKICvBz3o
These guys were probably my favourite discovery of last year. They probably have my favourite EP of the year, I've seen them live multiple times, and I just love their sound. They're like an indie surf rock, pop and jazzy fusion. This tune is an absolute gem.

CARE - Insomnia
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnO25BjZkHM
CARE's debut record was bloody ambitious. If it had been slightly shorter, there's a fair chance it would have been one of my favourite albums of 2017. Can't recall many power pop records from underground artists that I've really enjoyed, but he just has such a cool sound. This is just so refreshing. Haven't heard much like it.

Brand New - In The Water
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61K3zwyXnS4
**** Jesse Lacey. One of my favourite songs of the year will never be the same thanks to that arseh*le.

Mac DeMarco - Moonlight on the River
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VYbKamjB-4
Genuinely didn't think Mac had song like this in him. The rest of his album was forgettable, but it felt like he finally matured on this song, and I hope this is the direction he goes for in the future.

Melody's Echo Chamber - Cross My Heart
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBMOHtCtq3k
If you want to vomit, read the comments from Tame Impala shitwits. This is Melody's best song, and it came without Kevin Parker's involvement. I really appreciate that she changed her sound, because while I do really like her debut LP, it's not exactly the most original album.

OTHER SONGS I LOVED [approximate order]
Hatchie - Try
Alex Cameron - Country Figs
Kirin J Callinan - Bravado
(Sandy) Alex G - Proud
Ruby Haunt - Ivy
Gang of Youths - Do Not Let Your Spirit Wane
Wilder - Bedroom Blue
Institute - Only Child
HOMESHAKE - Call Me Up
Tram Cops - She Will
First Aid Kit - You are the Problem Here
The Smith Street Band - Suffer
Beach Fossils - Saint Ivy
Kevin Morby - Come to Me Now
Tom Stephens - Wake Me When the Day's Gone
Superorganism - Something For Your M.I.N.D.
Lil B feat. ILoveMakonnen - Global
LEISURE - Alone Together

I need a new hobby. SISTER/NATION, Fortress, 1972 VW Superbug, In Undertow and Fantastical Mind were probably my top 5 tunes though.

Didn't listen to a whole lot of new stuff in 2017, but the most rotation was probably the following;

Single: Konichiwa - Donny Benet / I Promise - Radiohead
Album: Flying Microtonal Banana - King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard

Never thought I'd be in to things like Donny Benet or King Gizzard, but along with small doses of Client Liaison I had a lot of fun with local stuff last year.

Oh, and yeah, all those Radiohead singles from OKNOTOK were great. I would do almost anything to have the privilege of seeing that band live.

Donny is a shit tonne of fun. Really digging his new single 'Melodie'. Puts on a fun live show too.
