Adelaide Lions Predicted Best Team
B: Brayden Maynard - Harris Andrews - Jack Bowes
HB: Lachlan Ash - Jake Kolodjashnij - Adam Saad
C: Dylan Shiel - Andrew McGrath - Zak Jones
HF: Jed Anderson - Joe Daniher - Harry Cunningham
F: Rhys Stanley - Riley Thilthorpe - Jason Horne-Francis
R: Oscar McInerney - Luke Dunstan - Rory Laird
INT: Angus Brayshaw - George Hewett - Sam Draper - Cameron Rayner - Lincoln McCarthy - Sam Day - James Stewart
Coach: Roylion

Summary: Adelaide are a team that has slowly been building over the past couple of years after bottoming out. Despite finishing 15th in 2021, the club now has a solid clutch of young talent and should now set it sights on pushing towards finals. Rory Laird is an absolute star but the depth does drop off fairly quickly afterwards with much of the next wave still developing. Nabbing Jason Horne-Francis is a fantastic get for now and the future but the improvement in the likes of Ash, Bowes, McGrath, Thilthorpe and Rayner will largely dictate just how far this team can go in 2022. I'm predicting that Adelaide surprise a few in 2022 and are right in contention for a shock finals berth right until the end. Missing out on finals won't be a failure for the Lions, but a more competitive season is a must.

2022 Prediction: 9th

Summary: Ballarat fell just short of the perfect season in 2021 after winning all games but the one that matters. The Dragons continue to go all out for their first premiership and have restocked nicely for another tilt at glory, adding around the fringes but keeping the core players together for another year. There are few teams with better top end talent than Ballarat, with the likes of Mitchell, Macrae and Mills leading the way. The depth also continues to grow which will be more important than ever in a likely COVID affected season. Sean Darcy was a huge find in 2021 but in general the KPP cupboard is fairly light on and a couple of key injuries could expose the Dragons. Despite this slight weakness, the Dragons will enter the season as one of the top 2 or 3 favourites and I wouldn't be surprised if this is the year they go all the way. Top 4 should be a minimum target and from there anything can happen.

2022 Prediction: 2nd

INT: Nathan Broad - Jake Waterman - Oscar Allen - Heath Chapman - Charlie Spargo - Bailey Scott - Mitch Georgiades
Coach: hotchilli

Summary: A new coach and a new team name it will be interesting to see how Darwin go in 2022. This team has pretty consistently made the finals without ever truly challenging for a premiership and with a nice blend of senior bodies and youthful prospects I fully expect the Crocodiles will again be there or thereabouts in the top 8 for this season also. The new coach had a fairly fruitful off-season, managing to fill their biggest hole by trading for a starting ruckman in Nankervis while also acquiring one of the brightest draft prospects in Daicos. Darcy Parish took his game to a whole new level in 2021 to become one of the up and coming superstars of the competition but to push the top contenders this season he'll need the likes of Dustin Martin and others to join him.

2022 Prediction: 10th

Summary: A perennial contender and one of the most successful teams in the recent era, I can't remember a season where Geelong weren't in the thick of things come the pointy end of the season. 2022 figures to be no different with the team again poised to be near the top again this season. It's not hard to see why, the team is littered with stars on every line with the depth of this team unmatched by any rival.

Despite their recent domination, through a combination of bad luck, hot opponents and poor timing, Geelong have hit somewhat of a dry spell premiership wise ever since the back to back wins of 2016 and 2017. Despite these setbacks, Geelong continues to improve their list season upon season with a smart list strategy not only keeping the team in contention now, but freshening up the list for a shot at future success also. Led by Zach Merrett, Patrick Dangerfield, Brodie Grundy , Marcus Bontempelli and Lachie Whitfield I see no reason Geelong can't claim the ultimate prize a the conclusion of the 2022 season. With the next generation of Sam Walsh, Zac Bailey, Tarryn Thomas, Will Day and Aaron Naughton just waiting to explode this team isn't going away anytime soon either.

2022 Prediction: 1st

Gippsland Sharks Predicted Best Team
B: Hayden Crozier - Aaron Francis - Nathan Wilson
HB: Bailey Dale - Tim O'Brien - Liam Baker
C: Rory Sloane - Trent Cotchin - Matt Rowell

R: Max Gawn - Andrew Brayshaw - Jaeger O'Meara
INT: Blake Acres - Caleb Poulter - Bradley Close - Tom Cole - Jason Castagna - James Rowe - Brent Daniels
Coach: Woefully Inept

Summary: A team that has been slowly building for a few years now and could surprise a few through the upcoming season, the Sharks have a solid, youthful base they should be able to launch from into the future. Max Gawn has been the undisputed superstar of this team for quite a few years but now finds a couple of challenges to his mantle, most notably in the form of Andrew Brayshaw who should push his season average even further beyond the 104 points he averaged in 2021. The big question over this team though sits with just how good Matt Rowell may be - are we likely to see something even better than what we saw in his incredible debut season, or will his somewhat disappointing sophomore season be closer to the mark?

The depth on all lines is lacking a little which makes it hard to see Gippsland as true finals contender however if a few of the younger players exceed expectations then we could well see the Sharks right in the hunt for a top 8 spot come the end of the home and away season. Overall though, Gippsland should see improvement on the previous season and I fully expect them to be much more competitive and consistent from game to game.

2022 Prediction: 11th

Summary: A team that was a perennial contender in years past has firmly been in rebuild mode the past few seasons and I don't see things changing too much for 2022. The focus clearly has been and will continue to be on youth, with off-season trades brining in further talented youngsters in exchange for more proven but older competitors. The average age clearly reflects this focus, with the Devils now having the 2nd youngest team in the competition.

I expect Gold coast will improve slightly on 2021, with Dayne Zorko continuing to be the lynchpin for the side. Zorko will be ably supported by the likes of Yeo, Powell and Cumming but the loss of Ben King does hurt somewhat. Mercifully though, key forward is a position of depth for for the Devils and with King out, the likes of Chol, Ladhams and Finlayson will need to step up.

2022 Prediction: 15th

Summary: A team that is always there or thereabouts, the last time the Hornets fell outside the top 8 was in 2013. For context, in that same year Gary Ablett won his Brownlow Medal for the Suns and Hawthorn won the first of their premierships in the three-peat. In 2021 the Hornets had to scrape and claw their way to every victory, just managing to make finals in 7th place after storming home to win 3 of their last 4 home and away matches. Unfortunately, Harbour City couldn't make a run of it in finals, eliminated by Sale in the first week.

With their struggles last season, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the Hornets would slide out of the top 8 in 2022. Conversely though I think Harbour City is well placed to hold their position and potentially even improve it. 2022 will see the return of fantasy veteran Matthew Crouch after missing the entirety of 2021, a true elite scorer of the competition when on song. Jack Gunston will also return in 2022 after a long injury lay-off while the additions of Stewart and Short make a once shaky looking backline much more formidable. I also expect Jy Simpkin and Hunter Clark to improve on their previous best seasons, in particular Simpkin who has the potential to push into the elite category in 2022.

All that said, the ultimate fortunes of this team may rest on the shoulders of Tim Taranto and Adam Treloar; will they get the mifield burn at their AFL teams that boost their scores to elite status, or will they be left to starve in the forward line with limited scoring opportunities. It may very well be the difference between top 4 and falling out of the finals for the first time in a long time.

2022 Prediction: 7th

Summary: The Giants are a team that has been firmly entrenched in rebuild mode the past few season, with coach goldcoastsun quickly investing in the draft and young talent. The list has taken a complete transformation and has very few players remaining from the side that won the 2019 Premiership. The average age reflects this approach with the Giants now boasting one of the youngest lists in the league. Jake Llloyd remains an outlier and is clearly the team's best performed player these past few seasons, but now it's time to see which of the younger players want to join him as a leader of the club.

With a lot of the young KPP stocks not yet proven as consistent performers, regaining Witts from injury will be a huge boon for the Giants and pivotal to their chances of success. In all honesty though, this team will take a few seasons longer to really be competitive and I expect they'll be towards the tailend of the ladder come the end of the season. The only problem with that though is they don't currently own any picks inside the first 2 rounds, a tricky situation that could well see them hand over a top draft pick to one of their rivals.

2022 Prediction: 16th

Summary: The Northern Reds were knocking on the door of finals in 2021 despite committing themselves to youth these past few seasons. The Reds now boast the youngest average age in the competition and the untapped talent is there for all to see. Petracca and Kelly are proven stars in the competition but outside of that the squad is full of youth. Unfortunately for the Reds quite often with youth comes inconsistent performances; the players are hugely talented but not always able to show it on the park. Rozee, English and Lukosius look the most likely to join the likes of Petracca and Kelly but I don't see it happening quite yet while Campbell, Quaynor, Bergman and Rankine are probably even further away from putting it all together.

Finals are definitely not out of the question for this squad but I want to see the younger players prove themselves before I back them in to do so. I really could see this squad falling anywhere between 7th and the foot end of the table which really just shows the unpredictability of youth. For this season, I'd lean towards the Reds falling closer to the bottom of the ladder than finals, but this is one team that could rise sharply in the coming years.

HB: Brandon Ellis - Sam Taylor - Nick Hind
C: Jarryd Lyons - Josh Kennedy - Cameron Guthrie
HF: Stephen Coniglio - Nick Larkey - Luke Shuey
F: Jack Billings - Josh Bruce - Brandan Parfitt
R: Rowan Marshall - Jack Steele - Taylor Adams
INT: Marc Pittonet - Alex Sexton - Sam Frost - Cody Weightman - Patrick Ryder - Tom McCartin - Shane McAdam
Coach: 11kgm

Summary: This team is continually underrated and overlooked when discussing premiership challengers but this team stacks up talent wise against any other side in the competition. Led by the likes of Steele, Adams, Lyons and Marshall, the firepower on this team is extreme and has the ability to post massive scores week on week. The Jets backed themselves in over the off-season, bringing in even more firepower to the club with the additions of Billings, Guthrie and Shuey. The young talent coming through might be a little bare compared to some other teams but that doesn't matter so much when a premiership is at stake.

The missing ingredient at Sale the past few years has been a little bit of proactive coaching. Due to personal matters and other obstacles, the Jets (or their equivalent) have been the team that has had the most 'automatic' team selections due to missing team cutoff dates over the past 2-3 seasons. Often this has resulted in losses when wins were available and ladder positions have been lower than what they could have been otherwise. You don't need to look far to find evidence of just how much these automatic team selections have the potential to hurt this team, finishing the 2021 H&A season in 7th place on the ladder but powering through the finals to finish 4th overall once team selections were made consistently. I expect Sale Jets and coach 11kgm to come out all guns blazing this season and carry that momentum all the way through to a deep finals run.

2022 Prediction: 3rd

Summary: A veteran coach and a veteran team, St Kilda Titans are seemingly always in the mix for finals and I expect nothing different in 2022. The additions of the likes of Clayton Oliver and Patrick Cripps over the past few off-seasons has added some real star power to a team that has always had great depth and it now means the Titans have one of the more imposing midfields in the competition.

The potential absence of Ben Cunnington could hurt St Kilda's chances and there are certainly some major questions over the key position depth, but this list is built to win now and with some injury luck they may very well find themselves back in the Grand Final after winning it all in 2020. Top four should be the aim, missing finals would be a failure and a premiership is definitely possible.

2022 Prediction: 4th

Tasmanian Magpies Predicted Best Team
B:
Daniel Rich - Jeremy McGovern - Dyson Heppell
HB: Jack Crisp - Darcy Moore - Jack Ziebell
C: Will Phillips - Caleb Serong - Tom Phillips

F: Shaun Higgins - Taylor Walker - Errol Gulden
R: Todd Goldstein - Travis Boak - Bailey Smith
INT: Lachlan Fogarty - Jack Madgen - Nick Blakey - Max King - Trent Rivers - Brayden Ham - Josh Treacy
Coach: Pie 4 Life

Summary: Tasmanian Magpies were probably the most disappointing team of 2021. After loading up during the previous off-season for a tilt at contention or at the very least a finals run, through a combination of bad luck and underperformance the Magpies could muster only 6 wins and 10th place for the season. Coach Pie 4 Life and his team have licked their wounds and have restocked for another finals tilt and this time around I fully expect Tasmania to be in the thick of the action come finals.

The Magpies still remain fairly young, boasting just the 11th oldest list in the competition but they now also contain quite a few older performers to hopefully add some consistent scoring to the squad. New addition Jack Ziebell should prove a very handy addition to the backline alongside Jack Crisp and Daniel Rich while Higgins, Sidebottom, Goldstein and Heppell are proven scorers. The depth is squad questionable however with the last few spots in the up for grabs amongst several younger unproven types. The likes of Caleb Serong, Errol Gulden, Nick Blakey, Max King and Bailey Smith show the future is bright for this list, however Tasmania really need two or three of those youngsters to really step up to go deep into finals. The way this list is built top 4 is certainly not out of the question, but missing the finals again would be a complete disaster.

2022 Prediction: 5th

Summary: Wagga Wagga are a team that is constantly underrated but consistently makes the finals and/or top four. This often surprises a few as the team has little star power but if you dig a little deeper into the list you start to see why finals are so often achieved. Outside of Wines there a very few elite scorers of the competition on the Warthogs list, but this squad is built on veteran depth across every line. The likes of Shannon Hurn, Joel Selwood, Hugh Greenwood and Kane Lambert aren't flashy players and may not instill an enormous amount of fear into opposition teams that other players might, but they provide a consistent scoring base week to week that can be relied up to rack up the wins across the season.

At an average age of nearly 26 years old, Wagga Wagga now boast the oldest list in the competition which does pose some questions, namely; can the veteran squad produce to the same level as they have in previous seasons and if not, who can fill the role in their best 18? Wagga Wagga have attempted to address some of these questions by bringing in young forward/midfielder Shai Bolton through the trade period. Bolton immediately slots into the forwardline for the Warthogs and under a long term contract should be a mianstay of the side for many years to come. Outside of this though, Wagga Wagga were one of the more inactive teams during the off-season, generally preferring to back in their existing talent over brining in new faces. Due to age and dropoff from in performance from the veteran players I'm expecting a slight regression in 2022 for the Warthogs, but still fully expect them to make finals come the end of the home and away season.

2022 Prediction: 8th

Summary: The Wolverines have been a team mired towards the bottom of the ladder these past few seasons, but through a strong investment in youth the wheels are starting to turn and progress is finally starting to be shown. Led by Callan Ward, West Adelaide posted a respectable 2021 by finishing in 12th after a competitive 5 win season. Joining Ward in 2022 is superstar Nat Fyfe and it is hoped the boost he provides, along with the continual growth of youngsters the ilk of Zak Butters, James Jordon and Xavier Duursma see the team from West Adelaide continue to push up the ladder.

Finals are possible for this squad, albeit unlikely, with depth a real concern for the Wolverines. There are too many unproven scorers in the starting 18 which doesn't leave me with too much confidence over the course of an entire season. The KPP stocks are pretty well stocked on all lines except ruck, but most of these numbers are formed by young players not at their peak or fringe AFL players. Tristan Xerri will be a real interesting watch though, if he gets the game time he could very much allay any ruck concerns for this club has now and into the future. I'm predicting a pretty similar year to last season for West Adelaide and that shouldn't be seen as a failure. In fact, a year of consolidation, some good drafting and further development from the young players could be seen as a riveting success.

Summary: West Coast managed to scrape into the top four after the 2021 home and away season after pulling together some late wins. One week into finals though and they were staring down a straight set exit after losing fairly comfortably to the Ballarat Dragons. From that point on though, West Coast went on a finals run for the ages, knocking off St Kilda in the semi-final before continuing that momentum to upset Geelong in the Preliminary Final and gaining revenge on the previously undefeated Dragons in the Grand Final to claim one of the more unlikely AFLTM premierships in recent history.

A lot of West Coast's success in the season and particularly in the finals was due to the heroic efforts of the likes of Touk Miller, Aaron Hall and Ben Keays. All three players were fairly unheralded upon the commencement of the 2021 season but by the end of the season Miller has won the league Best and Fairest award to go along with an All Australian selection, Hall joined Touk in the All-Australian while Keays saved his best to last to win the Grand Final MVP to cap off a wonderful season with an average score rivalling some of the biggest names in the competition.

2022 has arrived and West Coast should again be up there come the finals. There are some genuine question marks though, for instance; can Ben Keays back up his career best season, can Noah Anderson continue his rise and can the ageing key forward stocks hold on for another premiership push? There has also been quite a bit of talent lost during the off-season, highlighted by the aforementioned Aaron Hall who was traded to the Vultures and Thomas Stewart who was sent to Harbour City. The additions of Liberatore, Schoenberg and Worpel should go some way to covering the losses, but overall I am predicting a slight drop off in performance from several players resulting in a mid-lower top 8 finish. Mind you, based on last season this team could win the premiership from there!

2022 Prediction: 6th

Summary: Western Vultures have been building slowly the past few seasons after a sustained successful period. After multiple seasons of missing out on finals the top eight is now within reach and should be the aim for the Vultures. The club has a nice blend of experience and youth and despite their lowly ranking in 2021 they boast one of the more deep teams heading into this season. Adding Matthew Flynn fills an immediate and future need with the big man likely to take the number 1 ruck role immediately and Sheed should provide some further midfield depth when healthy.

Where the Vultures have been lacking recently is in the star power; they have a lot of solid foot soldiers but outside of Lachie Neale there was no player who could really damage an opposition with a massive score. That's been rectified somewhat by the recruitment of Aaron Hall but to take that next step into finals the Vultures really need the likes of Heeney and Greene to take the leap into elite status. Overall I feel the Vultures have improved their list compared to last season and are in the mix to play finals, but there may be other teams around who have improved just as much. It's definitely going to be a squeeze for the last few spots in the eight!

2022 Prediction: 12th
