Turned up to the student anti-war rally. That is the population of Scotch College. One school. The total student population (secondary and tertiary) of Melbourne would be well into the hundreds of thousands. Surely this is proof that it is the vocal minority that is against the war. Vast minority at that. Yes, it would be hard for secondary students to 'wag' school to attend the rally, but what about tertiary? Good on the kids going out and being proactive and protesting against something they don't agree with, but the mentality of these people was summed up by the chant "Hey Bush, how many kids have you killed today?". Since when was Bush a child-killer?

As I said, good on them, but these kids have been brainwashed into thinking that America is the enemy, the nation which turn its missles onto an 'innocent' country in order to invade them. What about Iraq? Remember 1990-91?

I'm for the war in the event Iraq has got weapons of mass destruction. And it does appear they do. So war is inevitable. And for the sake of global security, it is imperative that Hussein is toppled.

One last point, anti-war protesters seem convinced America as a whole is trigger-happy. They saved a deadly war against Cuba by being incredibly insistent to find a diplomatic solution. That will be the same case with North Korea in the near future. But Iraq has a proven track record of aggression, and all dimplotic solutions have seemingly been met with contempt on Iraq's behalf. There really isn't a choice whether we like it or not.

Most who went or were interviewed on TV didn't have a full understanding of what is really happening. They seem to think peace is the way to go, but where were they when Bill Clinton bombed Bagdad or when the French sent in troops to the Ivory Coast and then force the Ivory Coast govt to share power with armed rebels.

Where were they when Saddam tested his weapons on the Iraqi people, where were they when NATO attacked Yugoslavia, where were they when Congo was at civil war?

I'll tell you no where - they didn't say a word. They do so now because the USA is an easy target. They don't have valid options to no war just rehashing what has been tried before.

I have no problems with them protesting something they believe in, but they should in turn understand fully the reason for war before bagging Bush and the USA. Most of all they should remember that they don't speak for all Australians and that most Australians support a War with UN approval

You're a bit harsh Charlie. When I was at school I'd have supported any cause that gave me a half-day off school and the chance to go into the city and cause a bit of mayhem.

The problem is these kids really don't know what they are saying is wrong. The even support Palentine, which is crazy as they are bombing Jews just to get their way which goes against the peace they want

Protester: I'm going to protest against the war.

Me: I hope you get suspended.

Protester: Are you going to come? Should be fun!

Me: I think they should go to Iraq.

Protester: What? WHY?

Me: Because Saddam is a...

Protester: Wha....????

BomberSpirit, why exactly is calling them sheep harsh, if they are, as you said, just doing it for a half-day off???

SHEEP! If I had the motivation, I could dangle a bucket and lead them to a pro-war protest quite easily imo.

I tend to agree there Charlie. I know a few at my school that firmly believe in the cause, but I reckon the majority would care about getting out of school.

Obviously not many schoolkids thought of it as a worthy cause to wag. Assuming there are about 200,000 students in Melbourne (a very conservative guess), and only three thousand turn up... that's 1.5%. Who said it wasn't a vocal minority?

most of them definately went for the half day off, these hippy, dope smoking, long haired, bearded (even the gals), grubby, pathetic, whining bastards will do anything to get out of work.

Well I guess that proves that the larger protests weren't mostly schoolkids right? Because with that one, the kids didn't have to leave school early, so what would be the appeal, considering that they're all just after a free day off...

Or perhaps not. I know several people who wanted to go but couldn't because they're vce students etc, or in their first week of uni for the year, and need to attend in order to get their tutorials sorted out.

Or perhaps it proves absolutely nothing. People don't HAVE to protest, even if they believe in the cause.

i was harrassed all day at uni today.. my lunch BREAK was so rudely interupted but .....do u wanna sign up for this?? do u wanna buy this anti war independant newspaper?? blah blah... whinge whinge!!!! if i had something to say or wanted to voice an opinion i would do so without your encouragement as i can think well enough on my own.

most of the protesters today were clueless fools. they are ignorant children with most wanting no more than a day off.

Maybe these kids know more than you do. Many more Palestinians get killed by Israelis than the other way around. Being a Palestinian in Israel is like being a black in 70's South Africa.

God I almost kicked some school kids in Sydney yesterday. I hope most of them get dealt the punishment they deserve. Little pricks.

Sydney was blocked yesterday..couldn't move. A group of stupid idiotic school boys and few girls decided that it would be fun, LA riots style, to start shaking and trying to lift a poor persons car.

Then you had the 17 year old girls who took this opportunity to dress up in Britney clothes and just run a muck with their pubester skirts and carrying on like sluts.

3/4 of the kids who attended didn't know jack about anything except that Saddam is like, sooo bad, like you know..whatever.

Gotta love the "wat-ever" generation.

If they did that to me I'd tell them where to stick it. Trying to forcefeed you there propaganda seems ironical, afterall they are probably the same people that protest for "freespeech" and the right to your own opinion.

A student walk out is plain stupid. It is not as if anyone is going to care, hell at uni they wouldn't even notice that you are missing. It is business as usual, only the lecture theatres were a little easier on the nose :p

But don't they want peace??? They should be saying both sides are as bad as each other and should stop to bloodshed. Not Israel is wrong to kill Palestinians, but its alright for Palestinians to bomb Israel. Goes against what they are saying regarding the War when they support the use of violence in Israel, just because the Jews are wrong, heck if this is the case they have no credabilty.

Fact of the matter is that they (those disgusting unwashed hippies) obviously realise the whole thing was a failure. There wasn't so much as a murmur at Uni today.

What I forgot to meantion in the original post, is that Monash Uni Student Union leaders were handing stickers that said 'bomb the White House'. They claimed it was tongue in cheek, but there's only so far you can go trying to be sarcastic. It is perhaps the most hypocritical thing I have ever seen. Beats Suzi's many efforts. It almost makes me ashamed to be studying at an institution where terrorism is pretty much encouraged.

They want justice, and freedom, and a homeland and independance. Just like everyone else in the world. Peace would be a nice bonus.

Must admit I thought it would attract far more than 3000. Uni students alone should have well and truly exceeded that number, though maybe many went to the first one instead.

Perhaps the protests will steadily decrease as war proceeds. Could be the opposite to Vietnam and opposition decreases as war progresses.

Much will depend on media reporting I suspect.

Will the impact of civilian deaths TV outweigh other TV reports of torture chambers and civilians cheering the 'liberators' or vice versa. There's bound to be a lot of both, so it will be fascinating to see which way opinion swings.

It frightens me with the divided opinions. Hope it doesn't become another Vietnam with the vocal not necessarily the true opinion of all. My nephew served in Vietnam (conscription) and what they say about Viet vets is true. He came back home alighting from the plane on the opposite side, because of the venom directed at our soldiers. He has never recovered and is a nervous wreck. Prior to going, he was a normal teenager. No one advocates war; but in some instances it is necessary. All Aussies should unite. Unfortunately in this day and age, it's the minority that are so vocal. Val

One of the reasons I will not be join the Monash student Union. I was considering it last year, but that is just BS that sort of stuff.

The little tossers. I HATE peopl who follow a cause without first understanding the issues at hand. How old were half the kids? 12, 13? You know what annoys me? When a was in Year 12 a couple of years back, the school allowed these organisations (the type that organised the protest) to put up posters in our Year 12 Common Room regarding the S11 Protests at Crown.

Half of it is because they are brainwashed by their teachers, but most of it is because they want the day off.

I posted this in a different thread:

These innocent Iraqis are already dying under Saddam's dictatorship. Saddam's dictatorship is ruthless and callous, and what upsets me is the fact that people don't realise this.

Unfortunately, war has casualties, however, these casualties would pale into signaficance the amount of people that have died under the Saddam regime.

These people will die because Saddam won't fight in the desert, where there would be minimal civillian casualties. He wants to fight in the cities because he knows there will be higher civillian casualties and that will test the resolve of the people.

Just who did Saddam test his chemical weapons again? Oh thats right, the Kurds. He wiped out thousands of people in one go. Who know what else he has done since.

Unfortunately, proganda is a part of war and it is hard to know who to believe. Remember WW2? The propaganda used by both sides is infamous. There is more to this than just oil, that is too easy to say and it is just plain obvious. I mean, imagine the outcry after the war if American oil companies start moving into Iraq (or along those lines), no one would ever back the Americans again. Or even if the US bought oil at drastically low prices from whoever ends up refining the oil.

To the people who are saying this is just about oil and telling others that is not a black and white issue, perhaps you should listen to your own words.

ok, first of all if you guys thought u would realise the media love to drum things up and create talk. They're main motivation is to sell papers and get high TV ratings, not tell you the truth!

there were 3 people at that whole rally that didn't know why they were there and the news showed them. Me and my friends were asked the same quetion and came up with all these answers and because we sounded slightly intelligent we were cut off half way through.

The "silent majority" do not necissarily support war. Most people at my school (with 1700 students) want peace. Just because they haven't attended rallies doesn't mean they don't support peace!

71% of the Australian population DON'T WANT WAR. YOU AND YOUR WAR-MONGER FRIENDS ARE THE MINORITY.

Who cares why these people were at the rally! THEY DON'T WANT WAR. Their motives are not the issue.

Get a life, daicos4eva. Do something yourself rather than sitting back typing on a sad forum and bagging everyone else's actions!
