If, as I suspect, we see Phillips and Marsh in this week, we will have played 38 different players before the bye.

The nearest challenger to our leadership here is Gold Coast, with 37, and they have looked about as uncompetitive as us at at our worst. Of those yet to play, Wills could easily become number 39 at some stage, but that is probably it.

The competition average at the moment is 32. It is not unusual to hit this level by the end of a season (though it is usually a sign of a season off the rails). Getting there this early is pretty unusual.

When you get to this sort of level of change it's likely you are playing a lot of players who either aren't yet or no longer are AFL standard, and I think we have seen plenty of both.

What is striking for me is that as much as injuries have been behind this, form has played at least as big a role. I have no real idea yet who is our best 22 now, or for next year, and I don't know when we are going to know that.

Given the above, we are probably doing better than expected, a sobering thought.

Losing to Carlton St Kilda ect the way we did... and the pathetic effort we've given in a few other games... it goes a lot deeper than personal and injuries. It's about the coaches, the structures/game plan and the players mindset.

In some ways using 38 players is a positive thing because:
- it gives us at least a partial excuse for where we are on the ladder;
- its giving the youngsters game time;
- it must be making the club at least consider whether we need to overhaul the fitness department; and
- its giving the coaching staff a clearer idea of who might be best 22 over the next few years.

The downside is that we don't know whether coaching and game plan are responsible for our performances or not and it will be harder to know which players to get rid of at the end of the year. Also, for us supporters it's pretty shit knowing that without a miracle finals are already gone for this year.

Can we go thru just about every Fit Players

Only other ones who havent played are Wyatt, Golds, and Sier (who is no longer fit anyway). So Wills looks like the only remaining chance this year.

So who is left;

Sier - can't see him getting a senior game at all this year
Wyatt - rookie list and a real development year for him, no senior games this year
Golds - oh please.
Wils - most likely to be number 39
Keeffe - unavailable
Thomas - unavailable

Elliott - injured, no games in 2016
Scharenberg - injured, slight chance of a game late in the year, maybe, but unikely

Can't see us getting to 40, 39 at most with Wills the only other player yet to play a game this year that may do so.

A part of me perversely would love to see it happen just for shits and giggles.

Having the worst injury list (once again) isn't the surprise, the only truly amazing thing is Ben Reid is still out there and looks to be in terrific form. :thumbsu:

If he goes down this Monday I'm coming for you with a blunt instrument and an angry gerbil.

Damn, 38 at half way is a staggering number, even worse when you consider there is really only 4 available players that haven't played - 2 are first year players, one an uncapped rookie, one a basketballer.

To have a good year you need consistency in personnel. Not only that this means you have your better players out there but just learning the game plan and working with teammates is impossible without consistency - especially in a young team. I am pretty confident no team could cope with this level of injury and change week to week.

I hear my Hawk supporter friends bemoaning how many players they have out and no team consistency - they have used 31 for the year. Freo is blaming its one win on the number of players unavailable - they have used 34 for the year.

It does seem we are expected to be used to this level of outages as we have it every year and I am pretty sick of complaining about injuries.
