Retired #54: Sam Grimley

Still don't think he's up to it, but he has a crack which is all you can ask. Provides a target alongside Joe so doesn't deserve to be dropped. Wouldn't be opposed to giving McKernan a game though.

Today we could have done with McKernan in as well as Grimley & Joey

Strange player - looks really athletic in an aerial contest but is a spud when the ball hits the ground looking really uncoordinated when trying to deal with a ground ball. This is why he's not afl standard.

He would have suited the 1980s, just lead, mark and kick, he is less mobile than the likes of Dunstall and Lockett were of course they are greats and Grimley isn't but his lack of mobility wouldn't have looked out of place in their era.

I would keep him in just for his accurate goal kicking.
Needs to do better when the ball hits the ground, though.
Terrible air shot in the goal square today.

Tbh, watching at the ground he was generally putrid. Let his man work off him, which burnt us particularly at kick-ins. Also had a few occasions where he either ran into a one-on-one we had and impacted our own player trying to take the mark (Brown and Daniher were two of those at different times). He's really frustrating.

He's pretty one dimensional at this stage but I still think it is an AFL standard dimension.

It's the way that he can take a contested mark deep forward and the way that he draws the ball on the lead that I like. At his size and with his athleticism (and ability to convert) he is someone who should absolutely be persisted with.

The way I look at it, we have a season to work with a guy who we could develop to play an important role next year. I'd be getting him in the gym and working him with Jamar for every available moment.

The one thing that absolutely must not happen is to change the combination again. The key forwards will need a lot of time together. A few weeks here and there will not help.

Today we just looked shot. It was frightening how slow even our fleet of foot players looked (and Carlton came back from WA).

Suffered today, made space for Daniher. Did like how he brought ball to the ground jus needs a small forward to crum for him, Petrie like.

Ah well, looks like its Beerfish and myself on the Grim Train

I would like to see how he goes in the perfect conditions under the roof, he looks and kicks like a forward, we know he can take a big grab but just seems out of sorts, seems to be in need of a big bag, I would keep him in and bring Smack in, three lively forwards with the likes of Redman, Eades, Longy or a freshened up Stokes.

On his lack of work when the ball hits the ground, this is where the small forwards need to learn how the big forward works, small forwards need to react to the big forward, if he is a hard leading forward then they should get out of the way, if he likes to attack the pack then they should expect the ball will sometimes fall to ground.

We looked better with him in the square and JD at CHF I thought

That's because Grimley does not move at all. He needs to go back to VFL. up until those last two goals he had 2 touches... Worst still - he let his the opposition move the ball out of the back with ease. He doesn't know how to position himself in the defensive zone from kick ins.. He is a poor player.

2 effective disposals in 81% game time is awful.

To get along at afl level you need to have at least two of:
  • A good footy brain (footy smarts, cunning, ability to play to a strategy etc)
  • Heart (courage, toughness, aggression, resilience)
  • Skills, plural (technique, creativity/reliability with the ball, good mark/judge of the flight of the ball, penetrating kick, parish-hands, evasiveness, etc)
While having
  • An appropriate body for how/where you play (height, strength; conditioning x what nature gives you. Steinberg comes to mind here as a negative example)
I think Grimley has the body size, obviously, and some of the skills for his position on the field (good mark, decent set shot). The other stuff though ....

I have been disappointed, I can understand a tall guy not being nimble but for his size I would have liked him to be more aggressive, there are times when he seems too casual but is that just how he moves, I would keep him on the VFL list but at this stage I don't see him becoming a senior player.
