he comes across as a little bit of an entitled, spoilt brat who has spat the dummy after not getting what he wants.

Why? He just wants to live in another city. Lots of people want to move cities

Surely also a reduced media responsibility to stay out of the spotlight
To some extent. There is a minimum number of engagements for players promoting the game as part of the CBA, plus any ASAs he has beyond 2019 will need to be renegotiated or concluded. Then there's private sponsorship as well... Obviously getting out of that sort of thing would mean a pay cut which could be important for a guy who doesn't have any promises of career longevity atm.

The CBA engagements at least can be like school visits or whatever, doesn't have to be in front of a camera.

The only thing we know was the messaging all way through and after was that we said a player is the minimum starting point, we set them and Joes management the task of finding of one if Sydney couldn’t generate one. At no point was it indicated afterwards by either party that we would have accepted any pick offer.

"We didn't offer 5. We were advised early on that 5 and 9 wouldn't get it done. We didn't need to offer it because it became clear that deal was not going to satisfy Essendon"

If you believe Charlie Gardiner or not that says to me Dodoro categorically got his point across in regards to players.
What rubbish. Negotiations are about exploring all options that you are willing to act on. If they didn’t offer pick 9 and 5 it was because they weren’t willing to part with them. Period.

Reality is he will always be in the spotlight. Will be even bigger next year with what transpired at the draft. He can't escape it.

Even if he moved to Sydney he would have been hounded. Not so much from the public, but footy media would have been relentless.

Getting on the park will result in positive attention. Most likely the negatve attention is what is impacting his mental state IMO.

I can't believe everybody is losing their heads because the purple headed ******* wrote some words that are the complete opposite of what he wrote only two weeks earlier.
His reporting is intentionally contrarian and only contains facts coincidentally. Check out his strike rate on drafting predictions this year as an example

A bit from Worsfold's interview on SEN about Joe:

John Worsfold: No doubt at all that Joey had requested the opportunity to go up to Sydney mid-way through a contract, which means when you sign a contract you make a commitment. Clubs make commitments to players when they sign. You know, throughout any trade period clubs throw players names out there that are currently contracted and look to trade them out because your circumstances change as a club, and you don't always get those deals done so those players stay and they're contracted so you're committed to them. And that works the same if a player asks for a trade.

And that's happened every year, at every club, players asking to leave in contract and players try to be traded out that are in contract, they don't always come off but sometimes they do. All my experience says nothing changes with the players attitude. They're driven young athletes that want to perform at the highest they can regardless of what may have transpired in terms of possibilities. They commit and then when they get through a season they sit down and reflect on that.

Tim Watson: So you don't feel there's any need to rebuild or build a bridge between say you and Joe or the club and Joe Daniher? Do you think he's going to be when he comes back fully committed to

JW: I've got no doubt Joey will be fully committed and I don't think we need to rebuild a bridge, but we need to communicate with him, understand what's happened. He's had a good break, he's been away, he's also been to Ireland on the training program with James Stewart and one of our physiotherapists so he's fully committed in already, you know.

Our physio got back the other day and said you know really well Joe was great, he looked like Joe. He was up and about, really enjoying what he was learning from this physio program and can't wait to see him back training with us, because we haven't had him on the track a lot. We love it when he's out there because even on the training track he still does special things.

Sydney: We'll give you 9 and 25.
Essendon: We're not trading him unless you give us 2 firsts + a player of our choice.
Sydney: Get back to us when you want to be realistic.

...

End of negotiations.

The best part was Sydney didn't have pick 9 because they refused to trade Papley

Time to change your username to Number38

good luck with this one

Just step back a little bit from there.

Sydney: Yeah Joe if you nominate us we’ll get the deal done.

JD: Ok cos I don’t want to tell Essendon I’m leaving and then not get to Sydney cos it’ll be awkward.

Sydney: We’ll get a deal done, no dramas.

Fast forward 3 months.

Essendon: 2 x first rounders thanks.

Sydney: No. A pick we don’t currently have and a 2nd rounder.

Essendon: No.

Sydney: Ok.

Next minute...

Sydney: Sorry Joe, we don’t think you’re that good, we were looking for a bargain.

JD: C***s.
