“I can remember Richmond people would always say, 'I don’t care where we finish on the ladder as long as we beat Collingwood',” Hafey says.

One of the most bitter defeats Hafey suffered was the 1980 grand final loss to the Tigers. On this occasion Richmond won by what was then a record winning margin, 81 points. “We got absolutely annihilated in every way, shape and form," he says.

Hafey is a Collingwood supporter.

Don't know about that Kurt!

I distinctly remember when he was coaching Collingwood, Geelong and Sydney that anytime they were not playing on the same day as Richmond, he would be seated about four rows back from me at the MCG at every game undeneath what was then the Olympic Stand. He seemed happier than most when we won and still seems happy enough when we win these days.

They don't call him Tiger Tom for no reason.

He loves us....still.

Tom Hafey may have coached Collingwood but he is an out and out Tiger, no dount about it. Was sat next to Kevin Bartlett and Francis Bourke at the function recently hosted by Rex Hunt, so I heard.

As it says at the bottom of the article, 3 generations of Hafey's were born in Richmond. He spent 11 years there, played and coached Richmond,

Most matches as Coach:
Tom Hafey
(248) (1966-1976)

Listed as coach of our team of the century..

so that would seem to say it all...especially when inner city suburb rivalry is taken into consideration. But to then go and coach the enemy.....must have cost him a few friendships. Guess he wanted to make a statement after getting sacked. I wonder how dinner with the folks went down during those years.

But when someone asks where he is from, I am sure I know what he answers!

That team of the century has some names to remember...that team should be put on all the boys lockers before this weeks game reminding them of who they are playing for!

Hafey is a Collingwood supporter.

He bloody well is not!

Sheesh! Wash your mouth out with soap.

Listen to him commentate a Tigers game, he can't help but say 'we' instead of 'they' when refering to Richmond.

No one who is a tiger held it against him for coaching Collingwood.

Richmond had stupidly sacked him.

If anyone blamed him for having another go at what he is legendry for then thier friendship is not worth chasing. We should have gone for him after Collingwood sacked him. Was it 1983? It makes sense doesnt it rather than going through the Sproules and Pattersons.

His time at Collingwood grew the legend and his time at Sydney also added to the legend.

Not sure of his time at Geelong. I think he got them into the finals

He is a Tiger through and through. to pursue coaching you cant be blamed for joining the enemy. Still turned up to training over the latter years.

Absolute legend of the game and top bloke. Glad he is ours.
