The 2012 AFL season is well underway and is quickly becoming one of the closest races to the premiership in recent years. Can the Cats continue their dynasty and go back to back? Will the Pies avenge their grand final loss or will the Hawks be able to shake their tag as chokers and taste the ultimate success once more?

We join the 2012 season at Round 16:

Chris Dawes could prove to be the match winner
It's 1V2 in a rematch of not only last years grand final but an epic encounter in Round 8 of this year which saw Geelong, once again come out on top. Geelong have been shaky in recent weeks with the loss of key defender Harry Taylor leaving the normally rock solid defense vulnerable. Luckily for the Cats they will be helped with the exclusion of Travis Cloke after he tore his hamstring in the dying stages against Carlton last week with the inclusion of Jackson Paine expected if Darren Jolly is unable to get up from a previous injury. Collingwood's midfield has looked shaky at times this year with Swan and Pendelbury under performing but they will be relied on to provide Chris Dawes with the pill. Dawes will be the key focus of the Cats and know that if they can stop the Coleman leader, they will be well poised to beat Collingwood again. This is expected to go down to the wire but I expect Geelong to get over the top of Collingwood by 11 points and regain top spot on the ladder.

Round 16 Summary:
This week we saw quite a shocking round of footy, with some upsets and the top of the table clash turning out to be a dud. We started this round on Friday night with Carlton and North Melbourne which was a much needed victory to the Roos who were troubled by the small forwards in Carlton's arsenal. On Saturday Afternoon, Melbourne were able to defeat Fremantle which may have been the killing blow to Freo's finals chances, while further over in the west Hamish Hartlett put on a clinic, gathering 18 disposals and kicking 4 goals. In the twilight time slot Richmond were able to get a win over the Suns who continued their poor mid season form. All eyes then turned to Collingwood and Geelong as we were promised an absolute cracker but instead we were given a fizzer. Collingwood dominated from start to finish, largely due to the dynamic move to play Scott Pendelbury as a mobile center half forward which resulted in 9 goals, 16 disposals and surely 3 Brownlow votes. It was more of the same up at the GABBA with the Lions copping a belting while on Sunday Adelaide managed to notch their 3rd win of season, knocking off GWS despite Jonathon Patton's 8 goals with Setanta O'Hailpin hitting the post with a shot after the siren to win the game for the Giants.. The Dogs and Hawks put on a classic at Etihad Stadium with both Grant and Roughead kicking big bags, while Griffin and Picken were getting the ball left, right and center. Unfortunately for the dogs, Hawthorn came out with a 2 point win. Closing the round out was West Coast and Sydney who have had some classics in the past and this did not disappoint with West Coast managing to hold off a late surge by Sydney to win by 10 points.

Bold Move On Pendlebury
15916gif.jpg
Scott Pendlebury celebrating one of his 9 goals on Saturday night against the Cats.
We all know how good Scott Pendlebury can be, but until Saturday night we didn't know just how versatile he could be. Questions were asked during the week about who would replace Travis Cloke at Center Half Forward with names like Paine and Jolly thrown around, so when Pendlebury lined up in the key position to start the game many people were shocked. This shock didn't last long with Pendlebury getting off to a flyer, not just on the scoreboard but on the disposals list as well. Geelong tried playing Tom Gillies, Josh Hunt and even Matthew Scarlett on the Magpie but none were able to nullify his effect on the game as he ended with 9 goals. After the game when asked about the decision to play Pendlebury up forward, coach Nathan Buckley said "It was Scott's idea actually, he believed that he could do the required job up forward and that we had the depth in the midfield to cover in his absence." Pendlebury's belief in being able to do the job paid off with a career high 9 goals on a night where many observers would have given the points to Tom Lonergan in his battle against Coleman leader Chris Dawes. This decimation of the second ranked Cats has sent a shock throughout the league as the Pies march to outright first on the ladder without Travis Cloke and a midfield that has underperformed so far this year. Couple this with the fact that the Cats seem to be losing some of their usual flare, we have to ask the question, who can stop the Collingwood Juggernaut?

Match of the Round:
Hawthorn V Collingwood
HAWvCOLL-246x316aB.jpg
Lance Franklin and Scott Pendlebury will be very important for their respective teams.
Two weeks in a row Collingwood have had to play a premiership contender, could we see another drubbing like we did last week? We saw a lethargic Hawthorn when these two went head to head in Round 1 this year but if Hawthorn are to beat Collingwood they are going to need a huge effort. Arguably the most important thing for Hawthorn to stop in order for them to pick up a win is the supply to the Collingwood forwards which has largely come from running backmen. If Hawthorn are able to shutdown Shaw, Goldsack, O'Brien and even Reid by having their forwards keep them accountable, they will go a long way in winning the game. Hawthorn will also need to capitalize on clearances if they hope to win by taking advantage of Swan, Thomas and Ball all under performing for the majority of this year. The biggest question of Hawthorn is which team will show up to play, the lethargic side that lost to GWS a couple of weeks ago or the side that can beat anyone on their day. Too often this year Hawthorn have played entire games in second gear which against Collingwood will net you a ten goal loss.
