Gotta say I'm a fan for sure :thumbsu:
But you say top grunge band, I'd rate Nirvana higher, and Soundgarden too.

Alice In Chains are probably tied with Faith No More for the most influencial band of the 90's. I cringe when bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana seem to always get the glory for the 90's.

LOVE Alice. Dirt is one of the all time great Rock albums, and Facelift isn't to shabby either.
Wouldn't rate them as grunge tho. They're heavier than grunge....

What a band. Saw them live at Festival Hall - Layne was struggling with a throat infection, but they were still pretty awesome.

Facelift - Great, a bit patchy
Sap - Great
Dirt - Brilliant
Jar of Flies - Brilliant
Three Legged Dog - Underrated

BTW, I hate the term 'grunge'. What the hell does it mean??? They were a (heavy) rock band, that's all.

Dirt is genius. Absolute genius.

Amazing band.

I have to say though, I saw them in around '92 at Festering Hall in Melbourne, and they were undoubtedly the most disapointing big name band I've ever seen......

Alice in Chains was without a doubt the best band during the whole Seattle movement... Soundgarden is a close second. Nirvana may have hella overrated, but they deserve a place near the top as well, perhaps in 3rd.

I absolutly love this band, Layne Staley's voice is just amazing, we will never see anybody who can pull off what he could do again. But the downfall he took becaus eof the drugs is really one of the saddest things to have happened in music, if anybody has seen the AIC unplugged videos, you can see just how badly drugs ********ed him up, and its really bad to see his face, but that show was truly one of the greatest performances of all time, better then Nirvana despite the greatness of Nirvana

That would only be because of Staley's addiction really getting to him and ********ing up their performances real bad.

That's exactly what happened. He seriously acted like he didn't care....

Dunno about the best (Cornell and Maynard have him IMO), but damn unique and absolutely haunting. Dunno what I mean by that, but there is something in his voice that makes me feel uncomfortable.

A shell of a bloke. Tragic.

Not even in the same league. Differen't sport. Another planet. Better songs helps, but the performance defecates on the Nirvana unplugged. And I like Nirvana's unplugged effort.

AIC were the best grunge band imo. Its a damn shame how Layne fell apart all the way to his death. Nirvana are overrated imo, still a good band but overrated. PJ and Soundgarden flip-flop at no. 2 for me. AIC were an awesome band though, Im a huge fan.

Yeah agree that they weren't really grunge, more hard rock.

Agree with NB that Staley's voice was somehwat haunting, the acoustic version of song nutshell is just a ripper.

He just harmonised with Cantrell so well (Cantrell si not getting near enough props in this thread either!) and they're probably my favourite singer/guitarist combo ever casue I'd wager they wouldn't ahve been anywhere near as succesful without eachother.

fave AIC tracks: We Die Young, Down in a Hole, No Excuses, Brother, Rooster

What about nutshell?

Every single person I know that's heard nutshell, AIC fan or not, loves it. It's damned depressing though. Not just the lyrics or the singing, but the actual song itself just has a really depressed sound to it. I love it.

I agree wholeheartedly with this, Roddy. I'm a big AIC fan but their live show truly sucked. They were all too drugf***ed to play properly.

And it didn't help they were supported by Suicidal Tendencies, who put on a scorcher of a show.

They blew Alice off the stage, and I like Alice heaps more than ST.

Stayley's attitude sucked seriously that night....

Suicidal Tendencies are one of the best live acts I've ever seen, even though their music is a bit "meh" to me

All on the money boys .

Taking it Roddy and Moistie that you were at the AIC festering Hall show around 92-93 ?

ST abso-f..kin-lutely wiped the floor with AIC , seriously , not many even in good form could have followed that set up , and poor old Llayne was not in good form . The term "completely drug f..ked springs to mind . Think they cancelled the rest of the tour after that

Suicidal followed up with a show at the Palace a few months later that i rate as the best live show i have ever seen , and i`ve seen a few .

Rick .... have you got "Art of Rebellion" ? ... if not , seriously , pick it up
