Amusement Parks

Why doesn't Australia have any amusement parks, except for the ones on the Gold Coast? Neither Melbourne or Sydney have one(except the Luna Parks). Surely somebody would make a killing if they opened one.

lack of population or relevant tourism I guess

At first they would do well due to the novelty factor but a cities citizens are hardly going to pay $90 often to attend.

In Perth we have Adventure World which is small but only charges about $30 which means it's not too expensive to head there one a year or so

Most major amusement parks tend to be in major tourism hubs where they are built in to the culture...people come from all over the world for them. Gold Coast is really the only place in Australia that has that kind of culture

Luna Park charges something like $25 to enter for unlimited rides, but then confectionary, food and drinks cost thousands once inside, so it really is an expensive day out, especially if you take the family along, me being 19 haven't been for a while, but used to go with mates a bit, and taken the girlfriend once, but it can get expensive...

West of Sydney used to have an amusement park (Wonderland), somewhere in Eastern Creek I think. Closed down because I think they went bankrupt.

Yup i went there the last time i was in Sydney in like 2002 maybe? I was about 14 or something at the time (i cant be bothered doing the maths). I had alot of fun there, and it was a decent amusement park, but boy was it quiet. Made it better as the lines were shorter but its unsurprising that it closed down.

THe water theme park attatched to it was great also. I went on a hot day so it worked out very well. http://wonderlandhistory.net/

Good site to bring back some memories. Some great pics and videos on there.. Was my last major family vacation too..

How many people would have the money to build one?

To build a quality roller coaster can cost upwards of $US25 million (Cost of Kingda Ka coaster in NJ), and an entire theme park billions.

It is the lack of population. LA has plenty of big parks (Disneyland of course, Universal, Magic Mountain, Knots Berry Farm) and same with Orlando. You don't go just for the one park- you go to them all.

Magic Mountains are all over the US but you don't travel to attend one (on its own). They have the local population to keep them open and people are willing to drive a ew hours to reach one, rather than flying to LA or Florida.

I would love to see more away from the Gold Coast - wonderland in Sydney was neglected and there was not enough variety

R.I.P Wobbies World

went there once in '91, what a f'n joke of a place that was, just a big trampoline, some tree house of some kind, and that rusty capsule thing that takes you around the park that sounded like it was going to fall onto the ground to your death at any second, TV was flogging ads for it all the time back then...it was literally just down the road from the old Channel Ten studios in Nunawading

didn't that place have some flying fox chopper on display too? whatever happened to that?

Gumbaya Park

:D:D

I love amusement parks, but unfortunately havent been able to get to many and I would love to have one in Melbourne. Maybe a combination of money, tourism and weather would be reasons we dont (unfortunately) have one.

I've been to some in Orlando, (Magic Kingdom, MGM, and Islands of Adventure). Islands of Adventure was def the best. Man I wish we had one of those here. :(

I never had the "pleasure" of going to Wobbies World. I definitely remember those ads for it but!!!

My parents took us kids to Gumbya park tho! It was the best day. And it had a tobogan and paddle boats.

On a school trip to England back in 2002 i went to an amazing amusment park.

Cant remember wat it was called but **** me it was good.

Our teachers running the trip worked out a deal, they paid a fee on behalf of all of us and you got free rides but no free food.

Didnt worry me, wants the point of eating food if your going to throw it up.

Great day.

Went to another travelling amusement park on the same trip with my billet and another lad from my school and i threw up every where after getting of this ride, right in the middle of the path, ****ing hell it felt good after it though. :D :D :D

Well Universal Studios is not meant to be an amusement park in the sense of high thrill rides.

In the States I have been to:

Busch Gardens(Tampa)
Six Flags Over Georgia(Atlanta)
Knotts Berry Farm(LA)
Kings Island(Cincinnati)

plus all the Orlando theme parks.

LIONS then DAYLIGHT - Was it Alton Towers in Staffordshire. I've been there. It's awesome.:thumbsu:

Well Lin Fox wanted to build a Disney Land at Avalon which is in between Melb and Geelong, havnt heard anymore about it though.
Magic Mountain in Glenelg, Adelaide, used to be the best before they got rid of it.

Last time I went to Luna Park I threw up on the Spider (I think that's what it's called) on a class excursion after eating too many chips. Great day!
