Never new big footy had a poker forum! So thought Id just pop in and see if anyone plays NPPL or APL, and their thoughts on the merits of each. I play NPPL, not through any superiority or anything but the venues are close to me. Im at the Doncaster Inn monday nights, Cherry Hill tuesday and the ocassional Mitcham Hotel on a thursday. How about everyone else?

I live in East Doncaster too, so I'm close to the Donny Inn and Cherry Hill. What sort of events are played there on the nights you mentioned? I may stick my head in next week ;)

I dont know how familiar you are with the pub poker scene, so forgive me if im just saying stuff you already know. the ones at doncaster inn are part of the NPPL (national pub poker league) one of the big poker leagues in australia, and I think its run by Dipper or his brother. Anyway, its mainly for fun, winner gets a $50 bar voucher, and entry to the regional championships (best in the state). Its mostly just for a fun night. Registration at 6, game starts at 7. Doncaster Inn gets about 80 people on a monday night, the cherry hill gets around 50 or so on a tuesday night, but its only been running a couple weeks. A good fun night, if you have a chance its well worth it

Haven't played pub poker for about 9 months, might get back to it one day (sparingly though). Of the two I preferred APL.

Check the old threads, especially the NPL one where I compared the two organisations.

Did you go tonight? I lasted about 8 hands, won a couple, then had AK suited, raised to $300, pre flop on the big blind, got a caller, then the flop came Ten J K , so flopped top pair and a straight draw, guy goes all in, I figured it for a bluff cos it seemed like he had no idea how to play, so I call, turn em over and he had 9 Queen and flopped a straight,, so i lost...

Yea mate, I did go.

I know exactly who you are, I was playing on the table in the corner where you were dealing for a bit, was chipleader wearing a blue t-shirt. We were talking for a bit about the game tommorow in Cherry Hill before you left.

I ended up making the final table, but got eliminated first hand (I was in the BB straight up, and it had me covered).

I was cruising until one hand before the last two tables merged. The blinds had just gone to up 4k/8k, and I picked up AQ in the cutoff. I pushed in my chips (I had about 50k, 2nd most on the table, probably in the top 3-4 out of the 10 people left all up), and the guy that was there with his GF (kept going all in wanting to leave!) called me with Ace 7, and hit his 7 to cripple me. Awesome run for the guy that beat me though, he had been wanting to leave for at least an hour but kept doubling up! I wonder how he did.

I did cop quite a few more annoying beats through the night. Lost with Kings to Ace rag (and to make it worse he was a bounty, and I had him all in), I ended up splitting a large pot when I had AQ against A10, and also lost really early trip jacks to a river flush. Not complaining though, that's what makes poker fun.

The night was good fun. I may head down to Cherry Hill tommorow night, but I got a fair bit of uni stuff piling up so we'll see how we go.

I hope ya have better luck tommorow night.

How'd you end up going tonight? Im still feeling for my mate, the one who went out right as I left, all in with Pocket Kings on a board of 9 and two lower cards and a rainbow flop- the caller has a Queen 9 and catches 9 on the river to win

Yea, that was a real bad beat.

I finished fourth out of about 60, but I feel pretty dissapointed.

My defining hand was the following:

Picked up AQ suited UTG, and before I could act the older balding guy to my left moved all in out of turn. Not wanting to deter him, I just called 4000. He moved in for about 50000. Chipleader with around 80 called him. I had about 60 left, and after contemplating for ages layed my hand down.k

I figured that it was very possible that at least one of the other guys had AK, aces, kings, queens. My best scenario, I figured was being up against a lower ace and a low pocket pair, meaning I probably had 5 outs, but also needed to dodge a few cards too.

As it turns out, it was a horrible laydown.

Original raiser showed pocket 9s, the chipleader, ace 7.

Ace came on the turn.

If I had played that hand I would have been a pretty massive chipleader.

In a regular tournament paying places, it probably would have been a decent laydown. But in the freeroll weighted so heavily towards the winner, I should have gambled.

Oh well, lesson learned.

I'll cya at the Donny Inn next week :)

Oh well, 4th still puts out some points, you could get to the regionals if you make quite a few more like that. Do you mean the bald guy who looks a bit like Leigh Matthews? Hes normally quite good.
Good on ya for a fourth placing anyways

This is a good point. It always pays to keep in mind what you are playing for and what the pay structure is, if there is one. If it's top heavy, such as a winner-take-all freeroll, 2nd is as good as 10th. But if you're stacked in a regular event and the blinds are not an issue, you might choose to wait for a better opportunity.

Yea, I made 8th last night too so I'm hoping I can scrape some points together. But as you said 1st and 2nd are where all the points are at.

Yea that's the guy. I was watching him as he read his cards and he smiled and got excited. While he only had nines, the read I got off him could have put him on any big pair.

LOL DONKAMENTS?ja

Meanie.

That's right. It's not exactly winner takes all in the NPPL, 2nd place gets a $50 voucher, but still, I should have called.

I had little Phil Gordon and David Sklansky angel faces floating through my head telling me to fold because of Gap Theory, and then I had little Sammy Farha, Matusow and Tony G devil faces WTFing at me and pleading me to call.

Serves me right for being too conservative though, but having said that if someone turned over ace king, kings, or queens, I would have looked like Phil Hellmuth.

I did make pretty good laydown at one point given the betting patterns of the hand.

Layed down two pair on a drawless board (Jacks and 8s) after getting raised on the river after not much betting was made throughout the whole hand (I had middle pair and hit the two pair on the river). I turned my cards over and showed the table my hand before making my decision, trying to get a read off the guy. Everyone was like, 'why are you even thinking?'. I saw him sort of smirk and decided to lay it down, and he showed Queen 8 for a higher two pair.

Edit: It was Jacks/Queens and sixes, actually. With 8s the board is no longer drawless!

Haha I remember this one, everyone was telling you to call too! Final tables two weeks in a row isnt a bad strike rate at all!

It's great experience for MTTs, with decent rewards on offer too.

Are there any other NPPL games on weekdays apart from Donny Inn and Cherry Hill, or are the rest of them APL?

It was a good fold.
You were underdog to the 9's.

I wouldn't beat yourself up about it.

I played our APL Regional invitational yesterday....the format was alright - two heats - top two from each table go thru to the final later on that night.

Unfortunately for me, i got donkied twice and didnt make the final...ah well, theres always the regional final next week in Orange - should be a much better event - only the top 120 players in the region qualify - i finished top 30.

Busted out about 20th.

I got crippled when I picked up A-10 utg, raised to 1300 (blinds were 200/400), got called by the guy to my left, the next guy pushed in for around 3k. I moved all in, and had the guy to my left covered (he had around 13k).

The guy to my left showed jacks, to other guy ace 7.

I was drawing to one of the two remaining aces, didn't hit, so I got chopped off at the knees, only had 3kish left.

The guy with jacks who beat me picked up pocket aces the next hand, 3 other people all went all in. He flopped a set of aces, one of the other guys with the most chips apart from him turned a flush, and the guy with aces rivered another ace for quads!

After that hand I got moved to a new table, the blinds had gone up to 400/800, and I was about to be hit by the blinds next round, with a 15 minute break to come after the hand. I pushed all in blind. Got 4-5 callers, which was good value for me, but in the end got killed by some guy that turned quads.

I'm sorry about the first hand. Terrible way to go out, but I had to push given the possibility that you were on a draw.

Yeah that first hand was shocking! I did the same thing pushing because of the draw by betting big, and then once you went all in I was a bit worried you had me beat, but I thought you could have had nut flush draw, straight draw, both or even high pockets, which I would have all beat at that point!

Is that 2 weeks in a row youve taken me out? Its my turn next week
