Saints lose CEO

| February 25, 2009 02:20pm

  • ST KILDA chief executive Archie Fraser has resigned from the club.
In a statement released moments ago, the club said he was leaving to "pursue other interests".

Fraser will complete a thorough handover, while the club looks for a replacement.

Saints chairman Greg Westaway said in the statement: "I personally thank Archie for his significant contribution over the last four years with the Club.

"As CEO, Archie steered the club through a difficult period of change at the Board and operating level and should be commended. I sincerely wish him well as he seeks fresh challenges in the future."

to lead the A-League (just got my member e-mail)....

Probably not the best timing, but I think he deserves that opportunity.

Edit - just beaten to it...

Always makes it interesting with the denials that anything was going on (including moving the kids out of school here and into the Gold Coast).

HUGE decision.
Sad to say it, but i dont have very much faith in the club selecting a new CEO who will steer us in the right direction and keep us there. Build us into a powerhouse on and off the field etc. What im trying to say, i cannot see us pulling a strong CEO in the mould of Maguire or Swan.

:( Where's my confidence?

*fingers crossed*

Wasn't there a rumour that Michael Nettleford was pencilled in to replace Archie?

Honestly I give up.

Why is it that whenever things look to be progressing or there seems to be some manner of stability around the place someone, somehwere in some position decides to screw it all up so close to the season starting. Christ, I mean is it so hard to have a stable board room?

So who's available .....

Pauline Hanson's got passion, gets plenty of media exposure and is a bloodnut (we don't have as many around the club as we used to).

no, won't get it

Archie will be replaced by Matt Hanson.

He is currently Chief Operating Officer for Melbourne Storm and was a former CFO of both Telstra Dome and St Kilda.

Mad saints supporter who is a perfect candidate and wil get the job.

The role of the CEO should normally be to implement the policy's dictated by the board.
As such we can't really expect the club to go off on in a bold new direction with a new CEO. At the same time there is no real point to having a CEO as a public figurehead ( Eddie Maguire ) it is much better that someone with experience running an organisation is found. It is also good that there will be overlap between the new and old CEO's ensuring a smooth transition.

Pretty important phase for the club.

Frankston was pretty much ballsed up - particularly now the price of steel has fallen through the floor (cost blowout was the reason we moved sites in the first place). But transition to new site should still be good.

Relatively new board, and new major sponsor. Brand new VFL affiliation.

Change in recruitment philosophy and list has been turned over.

Poor relationship with the AFL (and probably the Dome as well) - we seem to get flourered and taped to a light pole at every turn.

Need someone to bring it all together - not use it as a "look at moi" experience as some have done in the past.

Archie was different, but there has been rumblings down at the club about the style (having about 1/16th Scottish blood in me I can probably understand).

I think one thing we're not picking up on is how great Archie must have been in the role. For years, alot of us armchair experts have been getting cross at him for this or that, believing (or even perpetuating) rumours about his ability.

Well, a major Australian sporting league - not club, LEAGUE - believe he's done such a good job running our club that they'll put him in charge of their whole shebang. Either the suits who are making the decisions at Soccer Australia are really monkeys pulling names out of a hat (which seems unlikely, considering how successful a business the soccer's been these last few years...), or Archie is somebody top sporting business-people think was doing good stuff at Moorabbin.

Personally, I offer him a hearty thanks and all the best for the future.

Well said - I agree.

Nevertheless, I would have preferred to see the AFL refusing to give Andrew Demetriou another payrise and thus (as they kept saying to justify his salary) make him leave to run the A-League as another football code in Australia - would have been a win-win situation (for the AFL and St Kilda that is, not for the poor soccer fellows, of course).

St Kilda to grasp Nettlefold

Caroline Wilson | February 28, 2009

ST KILDA director Michael Nettlefold has emerged as a near-certainty to replace Archie Fraser as chief executive of the Saints.

Nettlefold, 49, a successful businessman and former St Kilda footballer, has been approached by the board in recent days.

Nettlefold spoke with fellow directors at the Saints' annual general meeting on Thursday and has promised the club an answer by Monday.
