Bailey's "28"

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Couple of articles on www.melbournefc.com.au where Bailey talks about having a squad of 28 which he and the others have to try and squeeze into 22.

A crack at guessing most of them?

Definite In's (17)

Garland
Warnock
Rivers
McLean
Bruce
Green
Morton
Davey
Moloney
McDonald
P. Johnson
Jones
Bate
Miller
Newton
Buckley
Austin

The Rest of the "28" (11)

Bail
Jetta
Bartram
Maric
Martin
Meesen
Sylvia

The five I'd want - Bartram, Spencer, Frawley, Sylvia and Maric. Dunn and Martin unfortunate.

Austin, Newton, Warnock and Moloney aren't garaunteed for mine. Also I just don't think Maric can be considered.

Plus Bennell might not be up there for a game, but he's in the 28 for sure.

What have you heard from Petterd, was it a cork or not. If it was a cork he should be right and could keep Sylvia from a spot.

I'm not usually into bagging out our own players but if Newton is a 'definite' then we are in more trouble than I thought. He is possibly the worst player on an AFL list. The fact that he got a contract extension is beyond me. He is lazy and a very one dimensional player at best.

He doesn't want to do the hard things or put his body on the line. He is only interested in flying for hangers. He needs to get fair dinkum or stop wasting his time and being a list clogger. I know he is young and we are desperately short on tall forwards but in all seriousness he would not be anywhere near my best team.

Sylvia should play. I know he stuffed up but he isn't suspended & he is in our best 22. It's as simple as that.

That's kinda the problem Punchy, my definites aren't intended necessarily to be our best out and out 22 players. In an ideal world, they would be, but they're not.

Newton will be picked though, there is just no other option. The pressure is on him to step up and prove his worth.

I want to play someone like Jetta and Petterd who have worked hard. But there is only one Jack Watts at this stage so we've gotta play Newton some time in the next two years and it may as well be now. He hasn't been horrible during the preseason has he.

For the same reason I can't leave out Rivers, Garland, Frawley or Martin.

Must be a reporting error, the Melbourne site has a similar article and it definitely mentions Jetta.

Jurrah is no chance whatsoever surely.

Note the emphasis on Spencer's chances of playing, he is a monty.

Absolutely. Maybe not about Newton being the worst footballer on a list but FFS free rides stop at 11.

Aussie was rusty but I'll have him in. I'll play Stef and Petterd.

You're a bit 'punchy'...... "the worst player on an afl list" is a massive slur.

You say you are not usually into bagging our own players.....well you've certainly made up for lost time, now......goose:thumbsd:

If we don't play Newton who else goes forward with Miller? Start of the season is the best time to find out whether he's worth going with or not. Same for Meesen.

Exactly which is why we should play Meesen over Spencer at least for the first couple of weeks.

Newton should be played because he is the best (see only) prospect for that position that is available at the moment.

That doesn't apply to Meesen, needs to earn a spot, we learnt with Weetra last year the fallacy of just giving people a game to "see how they go", backing off no form whatsoever. And before you say it, yes Spencer hasn't shown a great deal, but he showed more in a 5 minute burst against the Hawks than Meesen has managed in four years on an AFL list.

Roll on the Spence.

This is only one example, and a subjective one at that, but it's one that seems to crop up all too regularly in training reports. From a training report on Demonology (on 24/3)

SPENCER - the one thing he has going for him is his mobility, he has improved leaps and bounds, I don't see any reason at the moment why he would not be included in the side for this weekend. His working around the ground today puts (someone else) in the shade.

MEESEN - improving, but see above.
