No, no, i am not begging for money!!

Usually if i watch one of those busker street shows, or see some dude looking forlorn, i'll give them money.

But when someone comes up to me hassling for money, jeez that frustrates the hell out of me!!

Some (who didnt look homeless - not that it matters) guy came up to me at the local BP this morning asking for a couple of bucks, and i ****tily told him i didnt have any money (i clearly did).

Does this **** you off, or do you just given them money?

yeah, it ****s me... specially when you have stupid kids begging you for a a few dollars to get home... we all know they're gonna spend it on other crap...

Can't stand people begging me for money.....I've never given beggers money. A couple of times I've just replied with "oh bugger, was about to ask you the same thing!" ;)

I almost got beat up in Swanston St by a drunk/high group of street kids. I took money out of an ATM and they just set on me.
What do you do when there are ten of them surrounding you?

They're bad overseas as well. They're freaking everywhere there. I with with a mate in London and a bloke hassled us for two train stops. My mate, who lived in London at the time, worked at a Pub (like most Aussies) nearby and told the bloke to turn up to his work that night and he'd get him a job. He offered him clothes and a place for the night. That way he wouldn't be need to embarrass himself anymore any by asking people for money.
He rudely turned down my mates offer and walked away swearing at us both.
My mate then said something that has stuck with me ever since, "Why help them if they aren't willing to help themselves?"

My advice, don't give em money, except when a large group surround you of course.
Protect yourself cause it's just not worth it.

There's a beggar who hangs at cnr George St and King Stwho's got a mobile phone. He sits on a bench and sometimes when you look underneath he has a clear plastic lunchbox, and in that lunchbox is a mobile phone. The fact that I have seen it in there on different occasions spanning over months tells me that he didn't find it or steal the night before, but most likely uses it.

Hey BB does he have sort of longish white hair, and drag a trolley around? Cos there is one that lives in Balmain, in my street, in the front of some offices, and he also has a phone. He has a whole setup there, mobile phone, coffee purculator (sp?) etc.

And when he takes his trolley on the bus and goes in to the city each day he pulls out a wallet to buy his ticket.

So clearly he has money, he just doesnt want to pay to live like the rest of us do.

Nup, but I believe a fair few beggars are likely to have mobile phones. This guy has browny/red hair and has a sign that says "I'm in a bad situation and I need money to live NOT to spend on alcohol, drugs, and fast women". He sits on a bench in front of Westpac Bank.

I feel like going up to him and saying, "No sh*t, you wouldn't have any money left over after you pay your f%^&ing phone bill"

Beggars

The worst one is a serial offender in the meblourne cbd. He is dressed in his ratty ****, pushing a pram with a lil girl in it and he dresses her like a slob as well. But when he is walking down the street you can hear the change jingling in the pockets. Scum bag. Using a lil girl like that.

My advice, when they ask you for a buck, is to turn around and go, " yeah sure, you got change for a hundred".. as longas its in broad daylight, with loads of people around, the response can be quite comical

hehe - I pass that guy everyday on my way to work.
I especially liked the "tacky vices' bit on his sign.

I must admit I gave $5 to a beggar once in San Francisco, purely because he had a sign that said "I need money for booze, drugs and whores. Please help".

I appreciate that kind of honesty.
True story!

Salvos are great. They do a great job. Giving them money is better than just some **** on the street. At least you know that it will go towards helping someone rather than booze/drugs.

A lot of the money goes towards the churches and other aspects of the salvo's actually. A few of my relatives a part of the salvo's. So my mum reckons it's a bit of a scam, doesn't give them money anymore. Still gives to other charities though.

He could've eaten the pastry. Beggars can't be choosers :D.

Walked out of the casino one night after a decent win, was approached by some bum who asked me to give him some cash - bagged me out for not doing it tough like him etc - told him I lost it all on the pokies and asked him if he knew of a good place to stay!

Its just too risky to pull out your wallet in front of these dudes, but if I had a few spare dollars actually in my hand at the time they asked I might think about it. Depends on whether they 'looked' genuine or not.

About 6 years ago, I was walking down Rundle Mall in Adelaide, and there was this guy asking people for $2. I walked past him and didn't give him any money. But then I saw a lady give him the money and about five minutes later, I saw the guy in McDonalds getting a burger!

Those people who ask for money annoy me so much.. I always say no when they ask, but always feel bad when I do have money. but eh.

Few months ago I went around the shop to buy dinner, and I had the exact amount of money, and got abused by somebody outside because I didn't have change for them so that they could buy drugs. pfft.

I don't feel bad about knocking back requests from beggars. It's common knowledge that begging is nothing more than an organised scam, and most of the money collected lines the pockets of the "Mr Bigs" who put them at the spots where they beg.
I'm willing to give to charity and willing to help the poor and disadvantaged, but the aggressive spivs begging on the streets aren't them.

WOW...what a story.

What is your point?

Maybe he was starving and then got 2 bucks to buy a 2 dollar meal. Perfectly logical i would have thought.

Please tell me this is a joke.

I can understand people feeling uncomfortable or unsafe when people approach them for money - no one likes that - but the comment above has to be the most ludicrous justification for being a tight@rse that i have ever heard!

Common knowledge to who? Time to have your medication and lie down.

I don't really care if they ask for money or cigarettes or whatever, it's just when they abuse you because you won't give them something that you yourself have earned.

And sometimes I do give the odd smoke or some change, I once had to try and get 20c for a phone call so some of them are actually being genuine, it's just a bit much when you get bugged dozens of times in one short journey!
