I saw this name pop up a few times getting cited as an influence or favourite of a number of acts I like (Wilco, War on Drugs, Nick Cave), so I thought I better check him out.

Brilliant!

I discovered him and Jackson C Frank around the same time (a forgotten Nick Drake type). They were both mentioned in Mojo magazine from memory

Bill Fay, legendary songwriter, dead at 81

Singer-songwriter Bill Fay, who experienced a successful comeback later in his career, has died at 81, as confirmed by his label, Dead Oceans.
