Just heard on good auhtority that the Birdman is running at 70%- as of last week- and is a BIG chance to return week 1 of the finals.

Roo-replaced by Porplyzia
Hentschel- " " McGregor
McLeod/Hart-" "Torney/Massie

Any thoughts??

Don't give up yet................

FREO look like first week opponent. That would mean they're heading for 10 in a row after beating PA next week- we could break their winning streak in the first week of the finals.

Finals are a different playing field.

'97, no Roo, Vardy, Modra ....Rehn just back from injury
'98, no Modra (sorry, guys- dropped/not selected (never let the facts get in the way of a good story), just thought it was important to mention he wasn't there)
finished 5th(key fact)- all finals on the road(remeber the Melbourne defeat first final)...

No-one gave us a chance in hell back then, so what has changed?? Nothing, we can do it again.
Keep smiling!!

And a big chance to twang it again if he comes back that soon, then again I guess we don't really have much to lose.

Actually, Modra was dropped.

After suffering from depression after yesterdays result and then the news about Hentschel, McLeod and Roo, I have had time to reflect and this is our side for this week:-

B : Johncock Rutten Bassett
HB : Van Berlo Bock Torney
C : Doughty Shirley Mattner
HF : Reilly Perrie Thompson
FF : Bode Welsh McGregor

Rucks : Clarke Goodwin Edwards

Interchange : Biglands, Knights, Douglas and Porplyzia

Then we still have the following to choose from in case we get any more injuries:-

Ruck - Maric and Hudson
Backs - Massie and Stevens
Forwards - Vince and Skipworth
Midfielders - that we seem to be short of

Now there you have it all is not lost!

That's pretty close to my preferred side for this week. If McG and Bass are fit, they need to play. If we can get a win this week, and just get a bit of confidence back in the camp, then all is definitely not lost.

I'm glad you mentioned Vince, because if we get any more injuries, and especially if Burton doesn't come up, we may have to roll the dice and look to someone like him to try and provide the x factor.

He can be the X factor - throw caution to the wind and put him in - after all, everyone is writing us off and we have nothing to lose now!

I'm not normally so positive about these sort of things but what the heck, its now or never.

Has Vince even been playing SANFL? I haven't seen his name in the reports for ages.

If we lose again this week, and get another lacklustre performance from the likes of Reilly (I'm hoping he doesn't play this week, but I bet NC begs to differ), Mattner, Thompson etc, then I think we have no choice but to roll the dice on some unpredictability for the first final.

Played his first game for a while on the weekend with Central's Magoos, so he's underdone, but so are half the rest of the squad.

I'd rather go for an experienced gamble though. Such as Torney, or Hudson. I don't recall any players with less than 5 games to their name have a significant impact on a game since McLeod's debut season.

Even Proplyzia might be ok because he's played several games and is older anyway.

Blight probably would do something like that but can't see Craig doing it.

I'm already factoring in Torney and Porps as definite inclusions for this week. As I said though, if we lose this week, and the same backbone players are conspicuous by their absence again, then you simply cannot keep carrying them. We're running out of soldiers though, so that means we may have to look at selections out of left field. I really hope the backboners stand up from now on, but if the usual suspects don't, well you can't give them a gold pass just because the alternatives are inexperienced. At least they'd be keen.

Sorry if I sound negative but I think that team above would get torn a new one by Freo or WC.

I'm sorry to rain on your parade but in 2-3 years time take out the ruck and replace it with three players and thats our side. You better get use to it.

That's ok. It was already raining for quite awhile before you came.

damn, we are seriously in strife with macca missing the year now.
Biglands isn't doing the job asked of him, one thing is good, John Meesen is coming good.

After all it takes a couple of years for a ruckmen to develop, I hope they take a punt and play him this week. It's a shame if he goes back to VIC after this year like fergus, his a 1st rounder so I hope craigy keeps him!

I find it incredible that Chris Knights was taken at pick 50 something?
His last match for the crows before getting injured (vs Saints) he picked up 17 touches in around 60% of the match.
Damn he is a star to be coming out of the draft that late, he'll be good for us after another season.

I think Reilly and co have to be dropped, it has to be someone, SOMEONE has to take the blame for this !

We cant keep playing the guys that aren't doing the job for us

I've had time to reflect too, and I'm deeper in depression after all the injury news of today. :(

Our season is going down the tube at 100 mph.

I think that side is pretty close to the best we can put on the park at the moment, although Massie probably should be on the interchange in place of either Knights or Douglas for the sake of flexibility.

It's no good canning the team if that's all we've got.

I wouldn't care right now if Bryce Gibbs father played a few extra games..

EDIT: Adelaide should really take the AFL to court over this debacle. It's an absolute joke that all other interstate teams have 100 or 150 games to qualify Father n Son. All Victorian teams have a 100 match qualification, disgrace, have a look at the bloke Geelong picked up a couple months ago, top 5!

Why is it that our qualification is 200games? What sets us apart to Collingwood and everyone else?
I don't get it?

We've never obtained a F/S pick, and never will for another 15-20years.

:) I dont know why, if Burton doesnt come up I feel that Mattner could be the x-factor for us. We need him to fire up
:)

What sets the Crows apart is that they get to choose from 4 (or 5) SANFL clubs. Shouldn't be too long until the Crows start getting their own players who have played 100 games and have sons available.

Hopefully Brett Burton gets back sooner rather than later. He is still the most important player (besides maybe Ricciuto) on the injury list. I think the Crows can still make the GF, especially if these two get back playing within 2-3 weeks. Goodwin and Edwards are two of the best in the AFL and if a few players can rally around them they'll be ok. Despite the injuries, I get the feeling the Crows have been waiting for the real stuff to start for the past 5 weeks. Craig will have those available primed and those available are experienced and good enough. Look at the quality still to pick from: possibly Burton & Mcleod later in finals, Ricciuto, McGregor, Hudson, Torney, Porplyzia, Massie, Skipworth, Stevens. All of these have been proven to be very capable at AFL level.

We're relying too heavily on our experienced players to do the hard yards i.e. edwards, goodwin, mcleod etc. Their leadership needs to motivate the others esp the backbone group who seem disinterested and unfocused right now. It is no wonder our tier 1 players are making more mistakes than before because of the burden they are shouldering to carry the team. The backbone group are going to have to work harder than ever come finals time.
