So I kept an eye on the Bock-Pavlich match-up at the game as it's the first time I've seen Bock live since being moved to CHB.

He provides some good work pushing forward, but he needed to stay a bit closer to Pav given the lump's aerobic capacity - too many times he drifted off him. Some good disciplined punches and a couple of nice marks, but Pav gave him a lesson he'll never forget...could learn a few things from the way McGregor played him at the end, although I should think Bock has enough strength now to hold his own man-on-man?

As I said in the votes thread, after Dyertribe rubbished Pavlich's goal output, I could have guessed he would maul us, and he did. The only reason he hasn't kicked heaps of goals this season is because he's been playing up the field. Connolly played him close in today, and his awesome marking killed us...expect to see a few more goals this season if Chubs keeps him there. He has made it perfectly clear he is still the stand-out CHF of this season.

Rutten I thought was excellent. None of his opponents had an impact, McPharlin ended up being shifted down to try and quell Perrie. He was his usual rebounding self, although a couple of his kicks weren't precise as usual. He even had no problems with Sandilands, despite outback jack claiming he'd be in trouble if plying on Sandilands...pity Sandilands is about as threatening as a sheepskin rug...

I think Bock can take a lot from this game. He has been very good so far at CHB, but this game showed exactly how important it is to have the defensive side of your game honed against the strong-markers - something he should start trying to learn from Kenny, who was the master negater. Bock shouldn't bow his head, but it should be a good lesson to not get too far in front of himself.

And bloody hell, can we trade HARD for Pavlich? Don't say no...make overtures to his family, manager, girlfriend, whoever...

Good summary - McGregor was there to shut Pavlich down and thats all - Bock there to attack and yes he's a bit looser than Kenny but I'll take Bock at CHB anyday - will learn a lot though as you say.

Bock is there to attack, but he should be aware enough that Pavlich's engine is huge and that running off him would not only be dangerous, but would get Bock tired early, trying to be a linkman AND keep up with Pavlich.

When you have someone as fit and dangerous as Pavlich to play on, Bock should have curtailed his attacking game for the benefit of his team. Rutten was in complete control of his opponent and the rest of our backline was rebounding fine.

If there was any day Bock needed to concentrate on negating his opponent, it was today. That's the lesson - after the first couple of goals, it should have been clear that he needed to play tighter on Pav. I think Craig leaving him there was a good lesson, but one that arguably went a little to close to letting us lose.

Agreed - BUT that was in the 3rd qtr and by then Bock had no juice to go with Pav in the way you suggested.

We also lacked an alternative - obviously wanting to keep Kenny at CHF - could have put Hentschell at CHB but can I suggest Craigs plan was to maintain an offensive attitude not a defensive.

Craig held this thought to the very last moment when he threw both Hentschell and Kenny down back.

IMO where we got jumped was more in the midfield - the supply to Pavlich.

That's what I mean though - Bock should have been aware of his own fitness and known that playing linkman AND running with Pav was going to completely stuff him very early, so he needed to sacrifice the linkman aspect his game for the more important aspect of negating Pav.

A horses for courses gamestyle - we have it for the team, we should have it for individuals too.

But who knows if Pav is going to stay on Bock for the whole game?

Bock can't pace himself or change his game on the assumption he is?

If Craig tells Bock he's going to stay on Pavlich, yes, he should have the assumption he's going to stay with him.

Your argument doesn't make sense otherwise you'd never have a plan for a player. Bock was told by Craig he'd be on Pav, his planning should be for how to play Pav, and part of that is the fact he needed to conserve his energy if he was going to take on someone with such a huge aerobic capacity. He didn't, and that's what he needs to learn from.

Fair enough - but why would you say to Bock to play differently to the way he has played to cement himself at CHB - would have been told to back his own game - and it worked for a half.

But the lesson he has to have taken out of this and the Saints game is next PS he has just got to get a lot fitter.

Because you can't just have one game for CHB. You should have a game that suits the player you are opposed to, because they are all different. It would be a gross oversight to assume he can play the same way with every player...what about this does not make sense to you?

No it does make sense - but I would say to Bock to back your game in first and have Pav chase you - then re-adjust if Pav got on top.

Now maybe Bock did re-adjust his game but lacked the fitness - people at the ground are probably in a better position to comment ;)

Yeh I was at the ground.

As I said, I watched that match-up with interest. Pavlich was running a lot in the first half, and Bock got lost off him a number of times and was saved by other teammates covering for him - Perrie for example followed Pavlich all the way back to CHB, because Bock was across the other side of the ground.

It was only our dominance that allowed Bock to get away with it in the first half, and for doing so he was stuffed in the second half.

Pav is a bloody superstar and its a sin he plays for a joke of a club like Fremantle. He gave Bock a hiding but I reckong Bocky will learn from this. I thought his first half was pretty good.

Pav had a bit of a run onball in the 2nd quarter but he was just deadly as a forward. Late in the game Craigy pushed Hentschel back to play in front of Pav and he did a reasonable job.

Rutten was excellent one again as was Bassett.

Kenny is a negating backman in the Presti mould for Collingwood - happy to just cut his man out and very rarely sets up attcking moves from defence.

Bock is an attacking CHB and runs forward out of defence, leaving his man, to set-up attacking moves.
This provides his opponent the chance to lose him in traffic if the ball rebounds back into our defence quickly.

:D

That was the gist of the SMS I sent home at 3-qtr-time.

"Fremantle should hand Josh Carr back and Pav should come home immediately"

On the way to the game I commented that today's Freo are in reality no different to their previous incarnations under Neesham and Drum.

While the playing list is vastly improved on paper, the club seems to have one of those cursed losing cultures the likes of St. Kilda. Regardless of talent or leaders, they're destined to fook things up.

Without Pav they would've folded like a house of cards and gone down by 100 today. Reminiscent of the days when Lockett was the only factor standing in the way of the Saints and oblivion.

but if I understand correctly, Kenny shut down Pav after Bock couldn't?

I thought Bock was ok on Pav in the 1st half. At least broke even.

Pavlich just played a sensational half of footy. As good as I have seen from any forward this year & better than I have seen him play before.

I don't think we should wory about it too much.
