Essendon’s past players association has taken possession of a rare John Coleman guernsey, possibly the last that he wore in his all-too-short 98-game, 537-goal career.

The famous No.10 jumper was handed to the past players at a function this week along with Coleman’s 1949 premiership medal, struck by the club to commemorate the Bombers’ triumph.

Both items were gifted to the players group by Ron Freer, a 90-year-old friend of Coleman’s who has had possession of the jumper and medal since the great Essendon full-forward’s death in 1973.

Freer and Coleman were friends from the time they met at University High School in 1942; Freer the cricket captain and Coleman the football skipper. Coleman was best man at Freer’s wedding, and when the all-time great Essendon player passed, his widow Monica gave his close friend the jumper and the premiership trophy.

Essendon’s past players intend handing the memorabilia on to the Essendon Football Club for display at their Tullamarine headquarters.

“I feel that it’s been sitting in my cupboard for years and it really should be given to the right people,’’ Freer told The Age. “It belongs at Essendon. I never, ever thought of selling it. Because you can’t buy friendship.’’
