After watching Port finish on hard again this afternoon, I believe we should be sending our fitness staff over to Adelaide to study the methods they are using.
It's blatantly obvious that their fitness guru' s pre- season program is miles in front of most of the league and we need to " borrow" some of his methods if we are going to achieve our ultimate goal.
Do you thing RTB would consider this?

Port also have been recruiting for elite runners for a while now. Not purely just coaching/conditioning.

I think every team will be improving their fitness and evaluating every player on their list after Port Adelaide showed how important fast running and breaking the line is in today's football. Not exactly important but it's another optional play style that wins games. Wouldn't be surprised if the whole competition shifts slowly into becoming fitter and add more kilometers to their running.

We were doing this last year, Port has just amped it up a few notches. One thing they do have, apart from elite runners, is a slew of top picks who can also be damaging kicks.

We have a few hard running players and are very fit as a team - but some of them leave a lot to be desired on kicking sometimes.

It has been stated that burgess has convinced the port players they can push themselves further than what they thought they were capable of.
This has allowed him to get more work into them than during pre season and during the weekly training sessions. Which is why they keep coming late in games - have learnt to push the pain barrier

Port were good but its probably partially luck. Their list is incredably healthy for this time of year. I really want new medical safe. That doctor that is skinny in round one and fat as a house in round 10 just isnt cutting it.

Remember our footy from the late rounds when we were close to full strength we looked ****ing scary.

Port isn't about one paced distance running. They're all about extended sprinting.

More kms isn't the answer.

And their style won't work for every list. Hawks and swans GF confirms there are other ways to get there.

While there's absolutely no doubt that acquiring the services of Darren Burgess has been just as important for Port as hiring Ken Hinkley, I think we do tend to underestimate just how well regarded and good Jason Weber also is at the same job.

Port are clearly the outstanding fast-finishing team in the league, but as Ross often alludes to in his pressers, we're no slouches when it comes to conditioning either. His entire philosophy demands an extremely fit team - we also run out games very well, and most of our injuries are contact based and not soft tissue explosions other than the weary McPharlin calves.

Is there room for Weber and the fitness staff to review their outcomes and look for areas of improvement? Of course. But I remember 2008 when we couldn't run out matches for love or money, and we've improved so much since then that we need to remember that our own fitness guru is a jet.

Weber and Burgess are in business together. Pav has occasionally tweeted out promoting their business (which is how I know this, I'm not a creepy stalker :p)

Yes by a massive 3 points:eek:
And we were 10 points up in the last quarter and missed a huge amount of shots in the 2nd. Plus Pearce decided to play appallingly. Port spent a few years down the bottom which enabled them to recruit a certain type of talent. We haven't been down the ladder for a few years and need to make the most of what we have. At the end of last year, commentators were saying that clubs needed the big bodied midfielder in the Freo mould. So now it's the fast Port model that we need to replicate? This is a very common end of year thread. Two years ago nobody would have said that we needed a midfield like Port because they were shite. WE ARE FINE. If Port were playing for their third flag in a row I would agree we need to change. We Don't.

My Cousin is a Physio at Freo and reports to Webber. I asked him about this topic. They regularly investigate other clubs techniques. He said its a very fine line as to how much Ks you put in them as it promotes soft tissue injuries, particularly calves, which is what happened at the end of last year.

I'm all for better running and fitness. It's an even more important factor now with the interchange cap.

I learned a little about conditioning while training for a marathon last year. Increasing speed and stamina is easy, just do more interval training. I think most fitness trainer knows what to do.The hard part is timing it so that our guys don't end up overtraining, which causes all the soft tissues problems we seem to be having a lot of this season. Also, stamina training and strength training is supposedly counter productive, they can only work on improving one or the other at a time.

If there are super effective training I assume they will be trade secrets, doubt Port will share the good stuff with us. I know we won't :D

Sorry about my rant if you were being sarcastic!
No Problem:thumbsu: I guess my my point was that they did not really loose by a lot against an opposition that would have clearly been favoured to win comfortably.
Mind you I maybe speaking out of my bum as I have not actually seen the game on TV, only know the result which I found a little surprising, more so the margin hence my comment "only 3 points"

Aren't we the 2nd best last qtr team?

Knee jerk reaction, Port are the flavour of the month, instead if copying we should be looking for something new.

Port looked far fitter at the end but the Hawks also played in their hands and decided to not attack in the last 5 minutes and just try to ice the game which they should have never done

Interesting too that Darren Burgess doesn't believe in high altitude training but instead gets them to train in extreme heat.

Port trained for 9 days in Dubai in the pre-season this year.

I wonder if he got that idea from when he was at Liverpool?

So how much earlier can our preseason start this year compared to last year?

I don't understand the training in Dubai that port undertook,it's going into their winter.

If Port want heat they should head to Marble bar.
