Bomber was just on FSN saying that Otto has a round 18 deadline to be back playing.

If he's not 100% fit by round 18 they're still going to play him to get some match conditioning into him before the finals. He sounded pretty confident which is great news i reckon :thumbsu:

It was also reported that GAJ, Scarlett, Varcoe & Mackie are definite starters this week.Bartel has a hip injury and will need to pass a fitness test tomorrow along with Dasher and SJ.

Almost at the stage where we have nothing to lose by playing him. My biggest concern (like Harley's comeback recently) is that he might get himself fitter in an aerobic sense but quite often players come back after long periods out and end up with a soft tissue injury like Harley did with his hamstring because of the extra workload on the body.

To get back at Rd 18 and then have a hamstring would just about shut the gate on him playing again this year ................ but we have to roll the dice and not die wondering.

Call me conservative but I've long held the view that we can't win a flag without Ottens in the side. Despite the improvement of Mumford I still have major concerns about carrying Blake who is virtually ineffective around the ground. As we saw against StK ... if we play a side with seasoned big bodied ruckman we can really get chopped up around the ground .... particularly late in games where the big blokes seem to have an impact. Happened also in the last qtr Vs Port where Lade and Brogan had a massive impact in their comeback.

Lets hope that this attempt at bringing an injured player up for finals is slightly more successful than the last time we tried it.

I think they have to give him a game in the 2nds first up. I just believe they need to see how he gets around the ground and how he pulls up each qtr. It wont hurt us if he plays less time in the 2s.

I also think he should come back through the VFL and it will give Blake and Mummy another chance or two to fight over who gets to be his understudy.

The biggest worry I have is that Otto comes back nowhere near ideal match fitness and if he goes too hard during a match he might do a soft tissue injury. Harley did his hamstring in his second or third game this year didn't he?

Still, it's a risk I'd much rather be taking than have to think about not getting Otto back at all. He really is our key to everything last year - if he comes back and plays some good footy our whole team will improve 20%.

i think we have had enough time with blake and mummy thank you very much. a worse AFL ruck duo I cannot remember.

I'm a little none-the-wiser by Bomber's definiton of 'deadline'. If Ottens has a round 18 deadline, doesn't that mean he has to be busting loose by round 18? If not, adios Brad for 2009? Yet if he's only 50%-80%, they'll still play him? I wish I had such deadlines in front of me.....

Can we just skittle to round 18 - if he's not ready, then skip the BS so that everyone in the litter knows what's what (which you would hope they know already), and what roles must be played come finals. I'd hate to see too much shuffle and dice in the last few rounds of the season.

Thing is, they know a 60% Ottens is better and more effective than a 100% Blake. They must be more than a little bothered and bewildered by how Blake has travelled these past few months. I'd also imagine they would prefer to give Mumford a breather over the next few weeks, as I can see his role gather momentum come September.

The round 18 deadline makes sense. Otherwise, even if Ottens was 100% fit, he wouldn't be fit enough to play a full match. The worst case scenario would be that Ottens isn't able to perform fully or reinjures himself. If they don't take the risk, chances are Ottens wouldn't be able to play for the rest of the season anyway. It would be too difficult to slip back into AFL after so many weeks out, especially given how intense and competitive the finals series looks set to be.

Renouf and Taylor are worse.

If this can be the matchup for our round 17 clash I'll be happy, I've never payed for a first class comedy act, and an AFL match at the same time.

LOL you have got to be kidding me. Mumford is so far ahead its not funny. Id rather risk it and play one ruckman than have blake playing finals.

Bomber said only two or three weeks ago that Blake was 'clearly' our second best ruckman behind Otto.

Blake's a far superior tap ruckman than Mumford at this point in time. Mumford offers a lot more around the ground.

I certainly don't know if the club's decided for sure which back up to take into the finals.

That was a few weeks ago when Bomber made that comment - at that point there were still intense disagreement over who was better.

A few weeks is a very long time in footy obviously, and I hope he's now been converted to the Mummy bandwagon like most of us seem to have.

You know, that's not such a crazy idea. I used to be the guy who swore by 2 ruckman

But neither of them are doing that well at ruck contests, and Blake is an absolute liability in general play. We are seriously better off without Blake on the ground

SO even if Ottens doesn't get well, we could play Mumford and send Mooney or Hawkins onto the ball when Mummy is resting. Joel Corey or Bartel 3rd man up if things get sticky

For what we gain with Blake winning a couple of taps at stoppages we lose much more in general play

Well you can all stop worrying about Blake. For this week at least

Blake out

West In

Believe it, I know.

Cheers
(PS, I am too knew to start a new thread, if someone wants to, I will post in it)

Hmmm, I was half right

Blake dropped, West named as emergency.

Will Mumford go one out, or West come in. I think west will play.
