No doubt that Brett Voss doesnt fit into Ross Lyon's plans for 2008 when he is dropped for Round 22, and both Clinton Jones and Jimmy Gwilt are both selected to play.

Every time Jones missed a tackle, turned the footy over or pondered while he was in possession, I just wondered what Vossy would have been thinking.

Players who can play forward or back, kick long and straight, good overhead and on the ground - and have courage in spades dont exactly grow on trees.

To be fair, however, it must be said that Voss did not show too many of any of those attributes last week !

Voss was excellent in the first 10 minutes against West Coast. After that, he was rarely sighted. Unfortunley, thats not good enough. If the Saints want to play finals again, you need players contributing a little more consisently than that. Voss is finished at the highest level. Performs well at VFL level, but has never played a few solid games in a row at the top level. Should be delisted (if voss doesnt announce a retirement) It seems very obvious that RL doesn't rate voss for beyond 2008

But Voss uses the ball far better. I'd rather Voss goes missing than Jones being a liability

If we'd rather blokes go missing than be a liability we might as well give up. Jones knows how to find the footy and without the ball he's a much better player than Voss. When was the last time brett voss chased and ran down an opposition player to win a holding the ball free kick??

With his pace, perhaps he could be tried as a tagger.
 
Breet Voss was very unlucky, he had a decent game against West Coast and got dropped for Jones, who cracks under pressure and has poor disposal.

We've got enough taggers, and winning free kicks isn't much good if the ball's given straight back to the opposition.

I admit that Jones can improve his disposal, whereas Voss is highly unlikely to get any faster. But as they stand I'd rather have had Voss on the park against the Tigers, especially with the retirement/delistment talk circulating

We've got too many slow players as well. There's hardly a player in our 22 that can call themselves quick. Jones is a welcome addition in my opinion. What do you want him to do? Come in and get BOG. He's a first year player, give him a chance.:thumbsd:

Jones needs to work on his disposal, if he does so during the off season (and if he is promoted to the main list, a decent size if) I'll be happy to see him play next year. We need more players with pace. But the original contention of this post is Jones playing at the expense of Voss in round 22 and next season.

In round 22 I would have rather seen Voss play seeing as he has been a loyal servant for 7 years, possibly/probably won't be around next season and would have liked to see him in a final game. On top of that, as I said, I rate his versatility and disposal ahead of Jones's pace as they stand.

In hindsight we could have used Voss. Our disposal against the Tigers was ordinary, particularly shots on goal, and we were lucky to escape with a win.
 
Jones is the future. He's young, and makes young people's mistakes - a year of experience and getting to gel with the team by regularly playing with them will work wonders.

Voss won't go either. Lyon wants to hold onto players like him, because they're cheap, and they add experience for younger players to feed off.

He's 23 going on 24. One might wonder if an 'old dog' can learn new tricks (to kick).

Brett has been a great player for the Saints since crossing over from Brisbane. If he gets another year that's fine but if he doesn't I hope he has lots of boys in the coming years. I would love to see his boys run around in the red, white and black.
 
I know this might sound a little bit stupid to some people, but he has been playing in the WAFL (clinton Jones) for the last 6 years or so, and they use the Burley footballs, possibly the worst footy ever made, 20 times worse than a sherrin and 10 times worse then a Faulkner. Believe it or not, there is actually a big difference in kicking the 2, and if the AFL started using Burleys it would take much more than 9 months before we saw the skills get even close to what they were.

Ive gotta a feeling he will stay and play and play well next seaon, he's that quick midfielder that we have been lacking since Heath Blacks departure.
 
Vossy has had a great career and got everything out of him. I would be suprised if he goes on though...

Jones had a great first half of the year. If you want to see some good footy, go back and watch him against sydney earlier this year. Give the guy a break, he just broke his collarbone!!

Good point you raise Inside Goss! Very obscure Brian Taylor-esque point, but very good all the same. The Burley footies are disgraceful. A Sherrin is a pleasure to kick whereas a Burley has very tough points on it and it doesn't feel as though one can connect with it at all when kicking. This could actually be a factor.

Priddis from West Coast seems to have made the transition fairly easily

Just trying to take a left field approach in defence of Jones, I think he will be a more than handy player if the Saints are going to challenge next season.

And while yes, Priddis does seem to kick alot better I think WC game plan suits him, he always seems to be bursting forward and can kick it long to lynch out of the square, Jones has been isolated up the ground trying to pin point a lead up forward, if you have watched him play for the Scorpions he is not too bad a kick, may sound like crap, but why would St. Kilda rookie a 23 year who can't kick? He has won 2 WAFL league B&F's.

Against the WCE the week before Voss (as mentioned earlier in this thread) was very, very good for 1 quarter. Once the game *opened up* into a more fast-paced affair he was nowhere to be seen. For me, this sums up where Vossy's career is at. He now does not have the necessary atheleticism (especially speed) to cut-it at the top level.

My take on the selections for round 22 were that...against a young, fast team such as the Tigers the match committee thought we needed more speed to cover the wider expanses of the MCG. Also, i do think it was a bit of a look to the future in that : Bally was being rested (good choice!), Jones and Gwilt came in, and Ferguson retained his position. Im not saying this 3 players are going to be future! But perhaps the match committee wanted to have another look at these players before having to make a decision on their playing careers at seasons end.

With the Voss vs Jones comparison. I see it like this...Jones' skills definately are not up to scratch, no question. Vossy's athleticism, endurance etc is not up to scratch. Jones is more valuable because...a) he is relatively young. and B) disposal skills are something that can be worked on and improved over time. Brett Voss is what...28? 30? You cannot convert him into an athlete now...whereas with Jones he has the physical attributes to succeed but just needs his disposal to be polished up big time.
