Brian Mayfield-Smith retires

From the end of November,not a complete shock as he's been talking about it for a while but a bit sudden.

The man who came from nowhere to end TJ's 33 year dominance in Sydney in 1985/86 & hold the premiership for the next 3 years,
one of the original private trainers in NSW for Bob Lapointe & Robert Sangster.

Remembered for a string of top horses through the 80's & 90's,especially stayers like Marauding, Handy Proverb & the brillliant Oaks filly Diamond Shower.
Later best known for Maybe Better (how unlucky to bump into the Japanese),Rubitano & the wonderfully consistent Oliver Twist.

Short odds that Brian will end up back in Africa where his passion is wildlife conservation

Absolutely great guy and an exceptional horseman. Will always remember him scratching Maybe Better only a couple of hours prior to the Cup to ensure the horse wouldn't be risking any further damage, even though there was a chance it could still run. Wouldn't see Gai doing that.

He'll be missed in the sport for sure.

The guy knew how to train alright, shame that at the end he couldn't get any horses.

Apparently has only 17 horses in work and is losing 6k a week atm.

well said nice guys finish last, if only he adapted to having a big stable and actually had a crack at beating the big guys in hayes, freedman down in melb.

can't help but think he would have gotten better horses with some extra PR
