Not sure how many doctors/specialists etc get around BF but I broke my fibula a week and a half ago and am trying to clarify a few things.

I was in a half cast, basically on the back of my leg and below the foot for a touch over a week, so I was unable to move my ankle and leg and was on crutches. Then 2 days ago I went to the outpatients department and the doc took the cast off me and told me to start walking on it with the aid of crutches as it isn't the weight bearing bone.

He said that the bone will heal by itself without the cast and even with me putting a bit of pressure on it. I am concerned that doing that as well as moving my leg around will mean the bones will move and not knit together the same as if I had a cast on it.

Just hoping the bone will heal properly, if anyone has any knowledge and can assist it'd be appreciated.

You trust BigFooty posters more than a doctor who examined you in person? Even doctors on BF wouldn't be definitive without seeing the xrays and knowing the severity of your personal fracture.

Just looking for others opinions, I am going back to get a 2nd opinion but just wanted to see if anyone else thought it was weird.

Personally, I don't think so, especially if he gave you crutches. Loadbearing isn't that weird, as a lot of fibula fractures are just moonboots for a week or two IIRC.

I broke my upper arm as a child and just had a soft sling, so not having complete immobilisation isn't that strange either. If it was really bad he would've cast your whole lower leg.

Note here a number of people with similar diagnoses: http://injuryupdate.com.au/forum/archive/index.php/t-874.html

And this one, back off crutches after 3 weeks.

If you don't have a severe break then it seems fairly normal.

when l broke my ankle it was 4/5 weeks before l could walk on it.l never had a cast on my leg at all maybe my doc was cheap.go see a doctor l would'nt put to much pussure on your broken leg.

Thanks mate! I am still keeping off it, too much of a puss to do anything that will maybe bring pain.
