Imagine this scenario. Pies make the 2007 grand final. Bucks for some reason is unable to play any games before the grand final but declares himself 100% fit to play in the grand final, however he obviously lacks match fitness. Bucks desperately wants to play and announces it will be his last game of AFL football.

Do the pies play him? Why? or why not?

"I'm going to train as hard as I can, and get as many modalities as I can, get as much running, weights, cross-training in as I possibly can,"

"I know in a month's time, I'll be super fit body-wise, compared to where I've been for the majority of this year.

"Time is running out, but never say never."

Hypothetical.
Ins: Buckley

Probably not.

If he has not proved his fitness playing a full game, we cannot afford to carry a potential injury into the biggest game of the year.

As much as we would love Buckley to win a flag, the club comes first always.

Jeez it would be tough though

He would play definitely!

Even on one leg, out of the goalsqaure, he would be in the side.

Might only play 30 or 40 minutes, but I would back him to still kick 1 or 2 goals :thumbsu:

Difficult, difficult question.
I don't think Bucks would put himself before the club, so if he genuinely believed that he was fit enough, and could be of good use to the team, I would be in favour of playing him.

I think his leadership and the respect he draws from players may be important enough reasons alone for him to get a run- we need an onfield general because Rocca aint giving much at the moment, not as thats a criticism, I think he has enough work on his plate thats all... Buckley = goal square specialist!

Of course you would!! Don't be silly. Bucks is a champion and champion's have influences on games.

Remember his return game vs Swans (in Sydney) after his major hammy op? He was a bloody star in that game! :thumbsu:

Interesting. Who would the Cats play on him assuming he plays and they make it. The assumption that we make it is a foregone conclusion! ;)

He would most definetely be picked to play if he put his hand up for selction.
The intangibles that Bucks would bring to the team on that day, I feel, would be of more value to the team than the 22nd player that would otherwise be selected.
Every team needs it's captain playing, especially when that Captain is of the calibre of Nathan Buckley.
Plus, the "let's do it for Bucks" factor might be the difference beetween a win or a loss.

Agreed. I know the GF is massive motivation, but add Bucks into the mix and our players would boil over with enthusiasm.

surely you would, your sides inexperience may be a reason for you dropping out of the finals, even the addition of bucks for his experience in finals is a big plus.., bucks at 75% is worth playing his that good. like someone else said, chuck him in the goalsquare

I think this would be one case where you could base a selection on "emotion" alone. If Bucks declared himself fit to play, it would be an absolute travesty if he wasn't selected.

Remember when we were crap and he was pretty much the sole reason we were semi-competitive? I think the match commitee would have to return the favour to him.

No he won't. But this is incredibly hypothetical. Bucks is a player who won't play unless he knows 100% that his presence there will help the team. if he hasn't played a match during the season before this, he'll rule himself out, and do what's right for the team, cos that's the sort of bloke Buckley is.

It's a similar scenario to 2003. Lockyer did his ACL in round 3, however, after one of the quickest recoveries in AFL history, from a terrible injury, he was pushing for selection in Rounds 21 and 22.

Lockyer would've been handy in the 2003 finals series, compared to someone like Tex or Lokan. In the result, he injured himself by not seekihng medical help for an injury that he sustained around Round 18, and that was his season.

If he had pushed for selection, would we have selected him. Probably not. Would he have made a difference? The answer's yes. Kinnear, Lokan and Walker were all in that GF side.

Buckley himself would be more likely to rule himself out of a GF then MM would.

My word. He's an out and out champion, they don't grow on trees you know.

However, I would probably think about it and then select him. :thumbsu:
Hence me saying Buckley is more likely to rule himself out than MM.

He's Nathan Buckley. 'Nuf Said.

I second that!

This one would even be out of Malthouse's hands. If one of our greatest ever players said he was fit and wanting to play his last ever game. I think that the club would owe it to the fans to see him and give him a send off. Even if its the Grand Final. Even at his worst, and on one leg, Buckley would have something to offer then the 22nd best Pies player on the field. At his worst, he'd be in the goal square one out. And if he is still alright, then in the last 5 or so minutes, chuck him on the ball so he can actually run around for his last 5 minutes of playing, ever. Imagine the crowd's roar every time he gets a possession in those last 5 minutes, especially if we're up. It'd be a surreal environment.

He wouldn't put his hand up unless he was 100% fit, therefore if he did put up his hand, he would absolutely be picked. Can you imagine the roar from the crowd when he runs out, or if he kicked a goal? The lift it would give the entire side would be profound, no matter what he contributes on the stats sheet.

At 40%, two dodgy hamstrings and a broken arm Nathan Buckley would dominate the grandfinal. Would be worth it just so he could make one kick, handball or tackle. He's a legend, and everyone around him would add another 10 percent. Definatly play.
