In his opening statement, St. Clair County Prosecutor Mike Wendling said Donald Burke lured Capac police Chief Raymond Hawks to his home on William G Drive where he ambushed Hawks with the intent to kill him.
"At the time he leveled that weapon and pulled that trigger, he did that with the intent to kill," Wendling said of the April 16 incident.
Burke, 50, of Capac, is standing trial in St. Clair County Circuit Court on three counts of assault with intent to murder -- also called attempted murder -- and a single count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He is accused of shooting and wounding Hawks and St. Clair County sheriff Deputy Tim O'Boyle and shooting at tow truck operator Mike Thorpe.
Well, I thought it was a bizarre co-incidence.
