Far be it for me to be a catalyst in the rumor mill but heres my
2-cents worth.

Byron Pickett will be in Blue and Gold next year. Imagine what he'd be like under Woosha.

Any thoughts ??

He recently signed a 2 year deal with the Kangas for this year and next, and as much as he is in career worst form, i cant imagine we'd be trading or delisting him.

Shannon Grant on the other hand......

No thanks. We need a key position player, not another goal sneak. I'd prefer us to make a bid for Des Headland (apparently he's hell bent on coming over west), or go after a key position player (don't know who, haven't heard of anyone wanting to come over).

If we can't get Headland or a quality tall, we should just invest in the draft. We don't need quick fix solutions, we need to build on what we have.

If West Coast were to get Pickett, they would probably use him as a defender.

He would be handy (I rate him highly), but West Coast are short of good key position players. Although MacIntosh, Jako, and Wilson are good now, we need to blood some players who will be able to replace them when they retire.

Glass and Gaspar have potential, but they aren't guaruntees.

Shannon Grant? He 's good, but wouldn't fit into the Eagles plan. The Eagles have a young midfield that should be able to dominate the comp in 2-3 years time.

We are definatley sorted with our midfield. He would come on as a smaller type defender, something we need and would add hardness to an existing mid range backline.

I agree we need tall key position players, but they are hard to come by and we could utilise some of these types we already have in the form of seaby, that red-headed bloke, McCarrey etc...

Pickett would be an excellent pickup because hes hard at it and can play at both ends very effectively.

Contracts are worth the paper there printed on. We learnt that at the end of 99.

Pickett would be welcome at the club but if we were to trade for him who would we lose?? Id rather stick with what we have got. We did it last year by not trading and putting some trust in the players we already had. That has gone rather well so far so why start trading now?

On McCarrey, I saw him play on the weekend and he was built like a brick s###house and he definately looks ready to be elevated to the senior list.

We have 3 potential quality talls on our rookie list in McCarrey, Lynch and Tuckey. This would be McCarrey's 2nd year on the rookie list so he either has to be elevated or delisted at the end of the year (rookie listed players can spend a maximum of 2 years on the rookie list before they either have to be elevated or delisted). We also have make atleast 4 spots available on the senior list for the draft.

So if we want to keep McCarrey we have to elevate him (we can afford to leave Tuckey and Lynch on the rookie list for another year), so that means we'll have to clear 5 players from the list. Personaly I would not like to see too many of our youngsters go, niether do I want to see any of the old brigade go. But sadly now that some of the second tear players are stepping up and taking over, I think we need to start thinking about cutting off some of the older end of the list (I only think this is the last season for Matera and Milli), clean out the dud youngsters from the list (this should be done first) and trade for higher draft picks.

I agree on Matera, I would love to see him play on. The point I would like to make is that if it came down to choosing between a quality young player and an old champion of the club who hasn't got too many years of football left in him, for the future success of the club I would always pick the quality youngster. I hope it doesn't come down to this though and we can find room for him next year. But the talk around town, and even Matera has conceeded that this could be his last season.

Players who will leave end of season IMO:

Harding
McIntosh
Munro
Hunter
Carroll (maybe)
Green (maybe)

The top2 are certainties, the next two are very likely as they are probably the least capable of making it at AFL level (from our list of youngsters), the bottom two because they are fringe players and are disposable.

Wouldn't surprise me if we saw Taylor, Embley and Wooden put on the transfer list. All decent players, but wouldn't be really missed if we wanted to trade for a low draft pick or another player.

With the exception of Harding I don't see these being cut. Munro, Hunter and Green are in the under 24 age group which will be the core of our future sucesses.
Carrol may go if others stand up as tall defenders. Milli will stay IMO. Last year was soft tissue injury (quad) and this year soft tissue (hammy). These are not career ending injuries and he is over his knee cap dislocations. The operation and brace are doing the job. And I think he may be eligible for our vets list.
I would be looking at a few of our older players and assessing whether at their age they will get worse or not. Sierra, Banners and Prior come to mind. By mid season I hope all are doing fantastic but if they are not then their age will be a factor.

ps last year so many people were calling for Chambers head but look at how he has matured.

pps Add McDougal as a key player

ppps IMO we don't need Picket, Chick or any other small type player. We have enough emerging talent. And unless Hay or Headland are available then I wouldn't go for any other player.
Probably best just to delist 4 and pick up 4 in the draft. No trades.

Harding will definately go, Milli may retire at the end of the year, but shows he is still a good player even as an "old man".

Good to see the paper this morning to read about Peter Matera wanting to go on, it was heartening to read although I do not trust what the rags do report, but I will remain confident on this one.

Embley will stay at the club along with the others. They are still young, but I do have a question of doubt on Adam Hunter, he still needs to work on his defensive side (a la Schofield).

My thoughts also tripped about the lines of "if we are a successful club this year and make the finals, how attractive will we look as players wanting to come home?"

Thoughts?

Byron Pickett eh. So who exactly are you going to give up to get him, Chris Judd?

Andrew McLeod's a good player too, maybe you can get him from Adelaide!!

Yeh Buzz, I'd just made that up. Although, I do think he could end up at our club because
(1) hes from wa and grew up barracking for the eagles,
(2) his club is financially rooted and
(3) because im good at predicting things.
ie our win over brisbane and when freo entered the comp i said they'd be shizen.

Well hypothetically if he did want to come here and his contract had expired I dont see why he couldnt nominate for the pre-season draft in the hope he could end up here. Dont want to count our chickens before they hatch though, though maybe we should count our pennies because if you dont you end up stuffing things up and not getting the player in the preseason draft at all due to busting the salary cap. That would really suck. Hey maybe you can get McLeod from Adelaide for when Pavlich goes there, if theres enough room in your salary cap.

By the way I had a Structural Analysis lecturer named Gupta for a semester before he got fired for being crap, not the same Gupta is it?

Ah yes turn it around into a sledge Freo post, how big footy.

I was just amused at the talk of getting Byron Pickett (contracted to end the 2003 I think) without suggesting who you'd have to give up to get him. As far as the pre-season draft is concerned (hypothetically of course, as he can't do that until the end of next season) unless your planning on a big form reversal, you don't look like getting an early pick so using that strategy he'd end up elsewhere.

BTW I've been fired for being crap but not as a lecturer.

How Bigfooty? Replace the word Freo with West Coast and Bigfooty with Dockerland and then you have a forum infatuated with the rival team.
