I can understand it serves a purpose, but I think it's rude to be mid sentence and get interrupted cos the person on the other end has to answer another call. It's even more annoying when you're kept waiting for 5 minutes and you're the one paying for the call.

It's bad enough to be stuffed around when you call big companies, but you don't need it when your chatting to friends.

Do you use call waiting, or does it bother you?
 
I do use call waiting, but I usually only put the person I'm talking to on hold for a few seconds while I tell the other person to ring me back later.
