Re: Cameron Shenton

So did Snoop Dog:

# 1 GWS - Cameron Shenton (Norwood – med fwd)
21yo medium fwd who really wanted to drop into the National Draft to a club looking for a medium fwd ready to go. Teams like the GWS, Swans, Tigers and Melbourne along with Port came to mind. Aggressive type who has express pace, very good hands above and below knees and is very creative around goals. Saw a lot of him and would say he would be a strong chance to get drafted.

Norwood livewire Cameron Shenton has been asked to attend the AFL's state draft combine in Adelaide in October.

The 20-year-old who has impressed with his clean ball use and uncanny goal sense is on the radar of AFL clubs after booting 27 goals this season.

Speaking after the match coach Nathan Bassett said he understood AFL interest in Shenton, but he wanted the young forward to be more consistent.

"I'd like him to impact on the game more.

He does not make many mistakes and I'd like him to make more. Because he doesn't make many he doesn't get enough of it.

For two-and-a-half quarters he is as important a player as there is on the ground and then he hides out there somewhere for a quarter-and-a-half.

"He needs to put himself out there more because his best stuff is exceptional and that is why AFL clubs are always interested in him. But he needs to do it for longer.''

"Cameron's a 21-year-old who has express pace and was our leading goalkicker in the senior side this year. I'd be surprised if he didn't go late in the draft because of his speed." - Norwood development manager David Oatey.

CAMERON SHENTON

VFL Senior Games: 17
VFL Senior Goals: 7
VFL Senior Averages: 11.35 disposals, 2.65 marks and 1.88 tackles

2012 Player Rating: 4/10 (Its only 4 due to first half season)

Cameron Shenton came to the Saints via the 2011 Rookie Draft after an outstanding 2011 season in SANFL where he kicked 43 goals in 17 games.

Despite playing just 2 games for StKilda in the NAB Cup, it was probably a first half of the season to forget for Shenton. He was unable to find the goals as easily as previous years, mainly due to not being able to finish off. He had plenty of shots on goals but often missed and sprayed them. He kicked 7 goals for the season and wasn’t having any impact around the ground. If we were doing this review half way through the season I think it would be fair to assume we wouldn’t have been surprised to see him delisted at years end. When he was played up forward he only averaged 9.2 disposals, 2.6 marks and 2.3 tackles.

During the second half of the season, the coaches decided to try him in new position. Running out of defence where he could utilize his pace and run & carry seemed to help Cameron find his feet. He was also used as stopper on small forwards. In the last 7 games, he increased his averages to 14.42 disposals, 2.71 marks and 1.28 tackles. He was named in best in 3 of those 7 games.

Shenton has done enough to show he can make it and has earnt another year on our rookie list. He was one of our best performed players in VFL in last 2 months of season and hopefully he can build on his late season form during preseason and early 2013 and really push for senior promotion.

Shents needs some more posts.

Schneider “I think Cam Shenton’s had two really good weeks in a row. Last week he had 30 touches and was probably our best player, and again this week he was definitely our standout, so he’s been fantastic.”

Sandringham development coach Matt Embling said Shenton was learning how to make the most of his physical assets. “I think he’s matured as a person. He’s understanding his role within the team and how he should play. He’s got a lot of upside and his speed over the ground – obviously owing to the nickname panther (is impressive). He’s very quick – cat-like in the way he moves.”

“He played some good games early on (this season) then dropped off a bit, but his last month has been fantastic.”

Bump. It's good looking back on the opinions when he was drafted.
I reckon if he can get a lot of the ball (20+ touches a game) he'll be awesome and make a huge impact.
Great upside from a rookie.

#39 Cameron Shenton

I think the best way to start the review is with Tony Micale's comments:

"Cameron was a versatile player this year. He came to the club as a forward but played his best footy this season as a half-back in the VFL. He had a really consistent four or five weeks in the VFL which led to a (well deserved) senior call-up. Cameron has an outstanding attitude and trained all summer.”

I wasn't sure about retaining Shaggy last year, but it's great to see people so desperate to improve.

Despite an eye-catching 3 goals as a forward in the R4 televised game against Werribee, he was struggling most weeks in the first half of 2013. Excluding the thrashing of Bendigo's kids, the highest number of possessions he'd gathered until mid June was 13 (with just 3 effective kicks in that game).

The club finally heeded the call of stkildathunda and he moved back into defence. He struggled with a couple of pacy small opponents against Essendon, but the following week had 15 possessions and 8 marks against Box Hill (and IIRC called for a HB and blasted a goal from outside 50 when the F50 was crowded).

Two weeks later he had 15 possessions, 3 tackles and a goal against North Ballarat and then 13 possessions, 6 marks (2 contested) and a goal against Williamstown.

These serviceable games suddenly turned into dominant rebounding performances.

27 possessions, 6 marks and 2 goals against Bendigo was followed by 28 possessions and 9 marks in a loss against Geelong.

Shenton defended well all day, taking intercept marks and winning one-on-one contests at ground level. “I thought his run was outstanding today,” Embling (Sandringham development coach) said. "And the way he linked up and actually carried the footy – he took the game on regardless of the scoreboard and competed really well. Over the last four-five weeks he’s had a really good block. Hopefully he gets an opportunity (at AFL level) really soon.”

Whilst his lack of tackling pressure has always been an issue for me, his desire to run off his man and create the play meant other teams had to focus on stopping him.

He was again prolific the next week against Essendon with 28 possessions, and the next match was his 4th in a row in the best players against the Northern Blues with 23 possessions, 6 marks (2 contested) and 1.2 (showing confidence to have a few pings from outside 50).

I'm not surprised the club decided to test him at the top level. Unfortunately he seemed to struggle with the extra intensity, and wasn't able to hurt the opposition with any of the searching dashes he'd displayed in the VFL. He was subbed off in the 3rd quarter with 7 possessions and 1 tackle.

Still only 23yo, it seems the club will give him a 3rd year on the rookie list. Whilst I still think there are too many gaps in his game, his VFL form in the latter part of the year was encouraging (along with the comments regarding his work ethic). Possibly he can be a late bloomer.

Has he ever been tried as a tagger, or strong-bodied wingman?

My understanding is his pace is great, skills are average but ok, but it's the defensive side of his game that needs work; am I right? Maybe if we give him a specific job to concentrate on the improvement will come, as he can congrats on the job rather than trying to be too creative...

A hard-running 188cm 84kg bloke is a perfect prototype of the modern mid; it'd be a real shame if he is never going to make it.

Seems he's better off sticking with his strengths (which pretty much involve him free-wheeling and going on searching runs to create play) rather than exposing him more to his weaknesses.

I guess that's why they stuck with him as a forward for so long (to give him freedom), but his kicking for goal wasn't great and its harder to get off the leash when your opponent is principally tasked with shutting you down (as opposed to a defensive role when you can pick moments to sneak off without anywhere near as much pressure).

Has to be able to get to another level with his fitness. Easier said than done of course, but I can't see how he can impact at AFL level without being able to cope with the extra intensity (noting that the rebounding defenders have to work extremely hard offensively and defensively).

The success that the Saints have had in the off-season should make it quite difficult for Shaggy to get a game. That's how it needs to be (if we are to improve). Either he has a breakout season (not just a string of 4 strong VFL games) or he probably won't play.

What sort of numbers does Cam get in disposals etc in the VFL? Is he a lock down player or does he rack it up?

If Shenton comes in this week I'm not sure we'll bring in Bruce as well, I hope we do but not so sure. I'd be happy with;

Bruce Delaney Dempster

Webster Gwilt Shenton

From the article about his elevation:

This year he has picked up where he left off in 2013, averaging 20 possessions and four rebound 50s per game at a 77.5 per cent disposal efficiency.

However, Shenton’s biggest improvement is his newfound goal-kicking ability – with four goals in five games. While he arrived as a forward, he’s spent the vast majority of his time at the club rebounding off half-back.

Maybe Warnock is a good comparison for you guys? Streaming out of the backline?
