Masquerading as politicians

If only that was the case. I'm not a politician and work with about 6-7 of them. Very very weird people from south of the Murray.:)

Get it right! :p

It's four P's : Politics, pr0n, Pot and Pyrotechnics!

The Pyrotechnic jig is up, I was there at Easter and all the firework joints in Fyshwick are closed. Apparently though there is some sort of amnesty on the Queen's B'day long weekend. I can picture the Convoy heading up there.

You mean live in Geelong??? The six hours I spent in Geelong was the worst in my life. I'd rather be mugged in NY, knifed in Atlanta or shot in LA.

Your footy team got flogged in that 6 hours?

I've lived in Canberra and now I live in Geelong so I can make that comparison.

Canberra is a good place to raise a family but it is so goddam dull. And there's no footy. No seafront. And it's expensive.

Geelong has all the family lifestyle advantages that Canberra has plus we have a great footy team, family and surf beaches, and you don't pay through the nose for a house.

Geelong isn't the most exciting place but Melbourne is just up the road where you can get all the excitement you need. Footy, Grand Prix, Melbourne Cup, Comedy Festival etc.

The other thing I like about Geelong is that it's a proper community. People know each other. Tradies tend to do a good job because they know their reputation goes on word of mouth. I was in Canberra when the fires went through and there was all this stuff in the paper about neighbours rallying round. It turned out that people had lived next to each other for up to 20 years and never spoken to each other!

Most people end up in Canberra for work and then convince themselves that it's a great place. But it's not. It's crap.

I've lived in Canberra for 30 years, and then the Gold Coast for the last 10.

The biggest difference I've found is that Canberra is an internal city whilst the Gold Coast is an external one. This I suspect is because of the cold, but the effect of this seems to be two-fold.

You need to know which building to be inside of to discover the 'life' in the city. The pulse of the entertainment scene changes regularly and you must be in the loop to know where's hot at the time.

If the night/clubs are not your scene, then you visit friends a lot, and you tend to stay later (too cold to go from the front door to the car).

Here on the GC, everything is organized for outside, be it for functions, shopping etc and this gives you a stand offish feeling that's difficult to describe. You always feel like you're ready to leave at a moments notice.

It seems to both my wife and myself that we have far more acquaintances here on the coast, but far fewer close friends.

To outsiders Canberra will always be a 'love it or hate it' city, but we're now caught in the unusual situation of still calling Canberra home only to find out that when we return on holidays, it doesn't feel like home at all.

Horses for courses I guess...
