I just heard on 3AW by Wallsy, that the injury suffered by Big Irish at the (accidental) hands or knee I should say, of Fev, was a lot more serious then first thought, and it could have had the capacity to kill him (in Wallsy's terms, but whether that is an overreaction from Walls who knows) however I have no idea how he could have played the next week against Freo, and be one of our best players, that injury is extremely painful, and apparently it has led to internal bleeding from his lower back and into his legs, I don't know the medical termonlogy, but it does appear to be very serious, and I'm actually not sure if we'll see the big Irishman back anytime soon, even this year ???

However I'd like to think Carlos has more then done himself to earn himself a new contract with the club, but I'm right now I'm just really gutted about the seriousness of the injury, and I can imagine it must still be very painful, and most importantly though, i just hope he recovers soon, and there isn't anything really seriously wrong with him (like internal organ injury etc)

Only time will tell.... but I hope that Irish is all right and can come back fit and fighting. It sounds very serious and Fevola has a lot to answer for. His stupid act has seriously injured another teammate.

If these reports are true. I highly doubt that we will see him this year....

I think Carlos's injury is just proof how bitter and stupid some fans were in complaining about Fevola's knee' into Teddy Richards, and saying it was a reportable offense.

I do wish Fev could find a way into making 'space' for himself without injuring other players though ..

Anyhow this info/news makes Big Irish's game against Freo even more amazing and worthy ...

He must have that same toughness and courage that another great irishman had in our game, Jimmy Stynes.

I'm amazed he played the next week. When I saw the incident in slow motion, it looks like the impact pushes his entire lower body forward. Amazed he doesn't have spinal damage.

I'm no self-appointed internet forum medical expert, but I think the medical term is a muscle haematoma from severe trauma - just a fancy way of saying bleeding into the muscle after a heavy blow i.e. Fev's knee. Sounds like the bleeding was so bad it extended into the muscles lower down (hamstring?, possible), causing stiffness. It'll gradually resorb and all will be fine. Just takes time and a lot of physio to overcome stiffness. How long? Who knows. Depends on how extensive the bleeding was and what muscles were affected I guess. Can't wait till Setanta comes back. Really need his pack busting efforts at CHF. :)

The best people to answer this here on BF are Bluebear and Guns.
What has he actually done?
Broken ribs, bruised kidney???????????????
If it is a clot/bruise of a muscle which muscle?
Did he damage a vertebrae?
Is it his spleen or liver
Spread to his legs - I don't get it.

This is bad news especially if he's out for the rest of the year, and CP - although sometimes I can't quite work out the consistency of your threads - you've supported Carlos for a long time now when many of us (including me) really questioned whether he would make it or not.

It's bad news because in his last month of playing footy he became really important to our forward line and forward line structure.

Here's to Carlos getting better and, if he can't play again this year, then coming back better than ever next year!

Apparently the back is in a bad way and his hamstrings are buggered too.

Terrible timing. Looks like the end of Setanta.

Has a history with leg injuries.

Blues' O'hAilpin shows he has the right stuff

O'hAilpin had for a long time battled a loss of power in his legs, numbness and pins and needles. No fewer than 16 scans over two-and-a-half years failed to diagnose a problem, O'hAilpin not the only one beginning to wonder whether it was all a figment of his imagination.

That was until a vascular specialist found blocked arteries behind O'hAilpin's knees, which had restricted circulation to his lower legs.

Surgery last October fixed the problem

A shame the OP doesn't have the same level of feeling for Walker and other sportsman who have battled serious injury.

We'll see the big Irishman back in the navy blue. ;):thumbsu:

Well any internal bleeding CAN kill you if it doesn't stop, or you get a clot thrown off........the question is how likely is it. Without knowing the specifics of his case it would be impossible to say, however, if it hadn't stopped bleeding after the clash in the Dons game, he would have been dead by the the Freo game. Had he thrown off a clot, again, the impacts of that are fairly immediate.
however I have no idea how he could have played the next week against Freo
Simple. Becuase unlike the guy who caused his injury Carlos tries 100% every time he steps onto the field.

You don't need medical terminology to describe that.

Different parts of the body are partitioned off from one another save for the openingins for major vessels and nerves. Bleeding from the back would have to be close to lethal to build enough volume and pressure to force its way to occlude major vessels, pass through from the abdomen into the thigh.

Possible........but highly improbable.

So here's my take. Copped a knee in the back. Possible kidney damage but certainly causing significant back problems.

The back is worked on prior to the Freo game and Setanta "comes up" for the game.
Late in the game or post match when he cools down the back, after its first big hitout gets very stiff (probably inflammed) which may then cause spasming/overactivity of the hamstrings either directly through involvement of the lumbar nerve roots, or indirectly through pain assosciated weakness of the low back "core stability muscles" and gluts, leading to overactive hammies.

Either way, the first run he does after the Freo game he complains not so much of back pain but of tightness in the hammies which until the back is sorted, isn't going to ease up. If the nerve is inflammed that could take a few weeks.

This, of course, as an armchair diagnosis could be just as big a fairy tale as what Wallsy gave us, but then again, who knows, Wallsy might have got it from a good source.

I'm sure someone on here will speak to Setanta, give him our best wishes and find out what the deal is.

Shit we missed him on Friday night (not that the ball would have got to him on the full :().
