I play online quite a bit, mainly at www.pokerroom.com and have done ok since going to real $$$ (after a few months of play $$$).

I stuck in $30 for fun a few months ago and am up to about $500, playing the $0.50 NL tables mainly.

I feel like it'd be fun to play some live poker somewhere to get a feel for it but don't know the best place to start. Casino, pub comps?

Is it bad form to stand and watch live games to get a feel?

Any advice?

definitely not, first time I went I watched for 2 hours

Have a go at APL, best place to learn a feel of the cards and the standard is not too dissimilar to 1-2 at Crown.

Maybe try limit too.

Cheers. The fact that I just learnt that the APL exists shows you the level of my knowledge :)

Trying to reel him in eh? Beware the Limit sharks jazz!

I suggest play a bit of APL/NPL, don't be overly concerned with results, just get more acquainted with the game, how people play, what angles they pull. Experiment a bit, try a few things rather than worry about making the final table every time.

Take a trip to Crown. Watch the PokerPro tables, watch the cash tables.

Sit down at a 0.50/1.00 PokerPro table with $20 and take it from there.

I like NL better - I know where I'm at.

Limit annoys me - probably because I'm no good at it :)

Very good advice.

If you play online, then you won't have much trouble converting to live play.

I'd basically reccomend what R&B suggested, except when you go to .5/1 on pokerpro, I'd just buy in for $50. With $20, you are basically commited to the first hand you play, more or less.

With Crown's second WSOP week for the year starting soon, go down and play in some of the freerolls. You'll be playing against pretty savvy players, so if you hold yourself well there there's lots of confidence to be gained!

Yeah, $50 would be better, I only suggested the $20 minimum because that's all some people are prepared to gamble with when they first play. I tend to buy in for $35. Yesterday I lost it all first hand with QQ in the BB. Too many limpers, I raise to 10, two callers. Flop KK9. I bet 12, fold, raise, I call. He had K-10o. Ridiculous, but that's poker. If he had AK, KQ, KJs or 99 fair enough.

If you want to be playing live, then take my advice re the PokerPro Passport. See the Crown thread.

I like to be able to cover the smaller stacks (easier to pressure blinds off them), $60 is what I generally start with. Also if I can make atleast 20% on what I start with on a cash table, that's enough for me. Time to move on, unless there is easy cash to be had.

What blinds were they, 10 seems like a massive first up raise on .5 - 1 blinds. He may have thought you were protecting a weaker pair. Still is a rediculous call, but I'd have raised a lot less, and have been prepared to fold.

On PokerPro, the only buy-ins are $20, $35 or $50. Flat $60 is on the dealer tables. You're right, $10 is a big raise on a 0.50/1.00 table, I probably raised as if it was a 1/2 table. But I got two callers and had a good flop. More often than not, I'm winning the $40 pot when I lead on the flop, especially with KK9 falling. I could have PFR less, but it can only be a good thing to get your money in ahead. I'm not fussed. More annoyed at dropping $60 first hand on the cash table with QQ first hand. When CO raised to 15, where am I going raising to 30? That was silly.

Yea that's similar to the last hand I played at pokerpro which I outlined in one of the earlier threads where I had queens, reraised it to $7.50 preflop and some kid (not the original raiser) calls with JACK SIX SUITED and stacks me on a 9-6-6 board.

Be prepared to face fluctuations in your initial bankroll when playing pokerpro, but that doesn't mean it can't be profitable :D

Looks like a good time to go and watch some tables. I'll stick my head in some time.

I would've liked that flop too, and you got plenty of cash in the hand as well. Sounds like you do alright on PokerPro.

Actually I don't play PokerPro any more. I've only started again to get stamps in my PokerPro PassPort and qualify for some free tournaments. Then I realise I can't play the 1st semi this Sunday cos I'm going to the footy
