Censoring words!

Three things:

a) This site is free to be used by anybody as long as they abide by the rules. If everybody knows what you mean when you write f*ck - why do you have to write the word out in full? A little extra effort to allow the site a wider audience. If you don't like these rules, go and hang out at one of the official forums - I'm sure you'll al be able to vent your feelings there in the same way you do on this board...

b) The censorship rules are now too sensitive. I am in full agreement. I will have them fine-tuned.

c) Perhaps a quick e-mail to me would have been better than all this childish ranting? "*sob* *cry* We can't swear any more!!! This is stupid! We wanna be able to exclude younger visitors by using unnecessary swearing! *tears*"

In short, it is NOT a case of "If you don't like to see people swearing then don't visit BigFooty!" It IS a case of "If you want to swear and scare people off, then go to another site."

I really did expect a bit more maturity rather than blatant attempts to be smart arses by working out ways to get around the swearing filters. Guess I was wrong.

bit sensative me thinks bluey.

you said yourself that the current situation is OTT. Most of the people who commented don't really swear anyway in posts and were merely pointing out the ridiculus nature of the current situation.

i mean, class is pathetic... something has to be done about it! the same as the chat problem.. instead of whinging about other people whinging, just fix it??

Its not a question of maturity

Swearing is a cultural outlet for anger and passion

People on this forum take this stuff in the way it is intended.

kids in school hear all these words by the time they are six or seven.


So this censorship is protecting no-one.

Why can't we discuss it even?? You even want to censor this.

Sometimes there are no equivalant words to describe how you feel other than using swear words. In a lot of cases it is clearly not a lack of vocabulary, but a desire to make a foreceful point.

Swearing is only swearing as someone deems it unacceptable to use in polite society.

but who shall be the judge of that??

The bottom line is that the word filters have no affect whatsoever as people get around them.

Result being that legitimate words are censored which shows how silly censorship is.

It also seems that whenever moderators are criticised on here, the moderators react by saying it is the posters being imature or something similar.

Not being able to accept criticism shows a lack of maturity also.

There is always a way to say something without swearing. If you cannot do that, then I'm afraid you have a limited grasp of the English language, or you are being lazy. It is that simple.

Believe it or not, I am the judge of what is acceptable on this board. Sorry, but you cannot have a situation where people ask me to censor FJD and then get peeved when I censor their swearing.

The filters set the boundaries of what is acceptable on this board. That is their effect.

I do not agree that moderators always react badly to criticism. I personally dislike the tone of some messages I read, demanding that this that or the other be censored or left alone. Sorry guys, but demands do not work.

The changes to the filter were fixed only when Eagleskickass politely pointed out via email that his name was not appearing correctly. Instead of the American "ass", why not use arse?

All we can do is delete/edit/move offensive posts.
