I don't mind the idea of shifting Howe forward, the forward mix just clearly isn't working well, for a reference in our last 8 games we have averaged 69.5 points per game and the last time we went over 80 points was 93 against the tigers last year. Maybe a bit of a fresh look with a new dynamic and vocal leader in there will give us a bit of a positive shake up

I think Moore has to return to the backline - and I like what we've seen of Houston's improvement and Parkers continued development so it at least gives us an avenue to look at Howe forward and persist with those two lads (with the additional benefit that if we feel we need another bigger body in the backline a Reef or Cochrane might be ready).

The issue with Howe is that I think he can only replace Membrey - who I am a big fan off, but I think Howe gives us a bit more aerially and aerobically than the Skunk. You then have to have a look at West for either Buller or Mcstay - which of the pair I would be inclined to keep the faith with Mcstay and give Buller a chance to find his feet at VFL level. Additionally, like Daniher and Roughead of yesteryear, maybe returning to a bit more of a second ruck role for Dan might get him back around the footy more and take his focus away from the pure "mark-kick-goal" mindset (which he isn't delivering on mind you), but both Daniher and JR have said a bit of ruck time actually helps them find a bit of space and opportunity to kick goals which might help Dan

For me I'd go a forward line of
Schultz Mcstay McCreery
Elliot West Howe

With a hefty amount of minutes for JDG i50 too - coming on as the 7th forward and basically playing as a pseudo-full forward when not pinching in the midfield.

Reserves too. He looked a state level player against St.Kilda
I didn't watch it. He sliced them up in his SANFL senior debut last year, so seniors too. I wanted him.

A couple of electric games at state league level.
Maybe a little more appetite for contest than our Jai? Idk I have barely seen much of either. Hopeful that Jai might become the reincarnation of Brad Dick, but with a more resilient body.

He's older and arrived a footballer who'd played good footy at a higher standard. Expecting Jai to get games already is silly. Jai's just arrived and his to play some good footy at lower levels to get a game.

Yeah. Jai only played junior footy and that’s it- very incompable
But he’s shown very good signs.

What exactly is keeping Steene out of the side?

I don't get to attend training or VFL games but by most reports, it sounds like he has put on bulk and is a competent tap ruckman, with a good leap. Unless he has trampoline hands or is a diabolically-bad kick, what is the harm in giving him a crack in at the top level?

How much worse than McStay or Buller can Steene be, especially given the very modest impact that those two have had over our first two games?

Same as Cochran for me. Didn’t set the world on fire last season. Struggled against bigger rucks last season, was well beaten by other clubs back ups.

With only pre seaskn to judge how can anyone say that’s changed.

The issue is with the vfl starting so late. I’d want to see a month of footy from him at vfl lvl first.

He’s got a good leap but is also going to ground far too often competing. As he did in the north game. Against GWS he looked good against anyone but the ruck, was manhandled by Briggs.

I’d happily bring west in. I wouldn’t with Steene yet.

This isn’t directed at you, but a lot of those calling to play the kids are also the first to get typing in their player threads when they don’t perform

Thanks for the insights.

I support the idea of bringing in West but feel like Membrey is the most like-for-like switch out. Membrey has arguably been the best of our trio of tall forwards so far (its a low bar!), so would be a little unlucky. With Steene, I would see him replacing either McStay or Buller. Perhaps we'll opt for West replacing Buller, with McStay retained as back-up ruck?

I understand your point about the last 8 games, which is exactly why we’ve changed the mix of our fwd line by recruiting Buller, and having a fit McStay.

Suggesting we now drop this approach, after just 2 games I believe is premature.

We need to get games into players with upside.

I would only have Membrey playing if the other talls have injuries or need a rest.

With West.....Is VFL a much higher standard than SANFL?

When was the last time we had a tall forward successfully through the VFL? Checkers or did he go straight from Port Melbourne into our seniors? I know Travis played some time in the VFL.

Cox?

I'm hoping with our VFL recruiting this year, our forwards will get much delivery than seasons past.

I personally am not a fan of playing Howe forward, unless at the expense of Membrey perhaps.
Just doesn’t have the speed and strength as previously, he will get burnt.
In all honesty, I think he’s now a break glass proposition, we need to blood players as great as he’s been.

Been well reported on here. Steene still developing his strength and ‘craft’. He got a fair crack at it preseason, and in the trial games. Remains a work in progress.
