I for one am glad. allowing some teams to have a salary cap of $x and the rest to be at $y means that the playing fields are not fair. Should players from Adelaide and Perth get paid less since their property market is weaker than the rest? Should western Bulldogs and geelong be paying less as their teams are no in the tooraks? no. Their salary caps are the same as Collingwood, Richmond et al, so therefore so should Sydney's.

However, i do agree with all younger players on smaller payments getting extra aid when it comes to accommodation, but this should occur for ALL TEAMS. all young guys who move interstate at 17-18 are poor, and need extra financial aid on top of the $40-50k/yr they are earning.

Sydney wanting the COLA is just as bad as Melbourne wanting handouts from the AFL to survive.

Doubt they'll keep it. Imagine the fuss Sydney would kick up over that.

I wonder if they will scrap all the Sydney "ambassadors" as well? I'm fairly sure that's played a big part in luring guys to Sydney over the years.

Is there any word on that anti-corruption group the AFL talked about bringing in? Now that a new leaf seems to be turning over it would be nice to get something into place, which stops future Essendon drug scandals and future Sydney not missing the finals ever because of interference.

Wonder how it's going to be phased in. Bit rough if it's put into place immediately. They'd be over the cap and lose a few players basically straight away unless they took a huge pay cut.

That's all fine and dandy, but they don't use it to make it easier for the players who need the allowance. The new recruits and rookie players are the ones who would need the money, not the players who are sitting on 300k. The allowance put in place was to make it easier for the younger guys to sustain a high living standard, not lure the biggest player two years in a row.

They abused the privilege, so they lost it. Simple.

I expect their rookie and draftee contracts will be boosted by 10%-20% and guys on base salary as well. That strikes me as fair and reasonable.

I still don't see 10% more expensive though, rents on average are higher but the middle of the road houses are still renting for roughly the same, petrol and food prices seem comparable from the holidays I take there. Kinda reminds me of the NFL, if you play for the NY teams you live in an apartment, if you play for Denver you probably own a two story mcmansion, there's no expectation that you have a base level of accommodation to be an AFL player, end of the day it's up to the individual to budget there finances. The benefits of living in the east of sydney far outweigh the cheaper rents available in footscray.

On top of this the AFL found during their American adventure that their capped sports, for example the NFL, are what they are, no privileges for the demographically poor sides and it is sure has hell more expensive in NY than TX.
