Why, oh why do I do computer fundamentals. Anyway, we've been given a task where we get information from a computer task and we have to answer questions about it. I need help with some areas so it would be much appreciated! This is the computer and details:

IBM ThinkCentre Computer Deal with 17" CRT Monitor ...
  • Pentium 4, 2.60Ghz, 800Mhz FSB
  • 512MB Memory
  • 40GB (7200rpm) HDD
  • CDRW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive
  • V.90 56K Modem
  • NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 64MB DDR (VGA)
  • AGP8x Adapter, 8 USB Ports
  • Microsoft Win XP Home operating system
  • Norton Anti Virus (3mth)
Bonus Software: Microsoft Works Suite, MS Word, Encarta, MS Money 2003 Standard and MS Photo Editing.

Question: Seperate the devices into input/output and storage devices and explain in detail how these devices work.
(with this one, you odn't have to bother about explaining, i'll find that out myself - this is the question i most need help with though)

Question: Explain the difference between the operating software and applications software mentioned in the package.

Question: Write a list of routine maintanence required to keep a new computer working properly.

They are some of the questions I'm struggling with. Any info would be great! Thanks.

Tsk, can't anyone do their own homework anymore?? :) Here's a brief guide though - hopefully you can rearrange it in your own words and understand it all.

1) Pretty straightforward. Input devices are what you use to give the computer instructions. Output devices are what the computer uses to give you results. Storage devices are where information is kept. Get it? The tricky part is where a device might be BOTH input and output.

2) The OS controls the computer - makes the input devices, video, sound, ports etc work together. the Apps are software packages that perform a specific task on top of the OS. Kind of.

3) Some things to consider would be... Keeping your work organised, understanding how to install and remove programs safely, running maintenance programs and virus checkers, logging onto the internet periodically and downloading software/OS updates...

Good luck ;) you should be able to find answers to a lot of your questions by googling them.

And most importantly, don't forget to keep paying Messers Gates and Job their extortion..., woops, upgrade fees so that your computer doesn't into a steaming pile of poop.

at your age you should be able to hack a computer by now:rolleyes: :D

but for whats its worth go into a computer store tell them this is the deal im getting, then ask them all the questions you want.

what each software program etc:

go into a couple of stores cos at a harvey norman or **** smith they wont give you the time of day once they figure out your not buying.

cheers and good luck.

OK, I pretty much get it. So input devices would be a mouse and keyboard, while output would be the modem, monitor and perhaps the OS? And I take it storage devices would be the hard drive, floppy disks etc.

Thanks for your help :).

input: mouse keyboard yes

output: monitor printer

operating system not really an output. software to control the computer processes

the modem can be input/output.
