If anyone has seen Garage Days, I think the bit where that guys gives up the band to play in a cover band and is doing an AC/DC cover at an RSL and then does a contrived Angus Young duck walk only to get cheers by a bunch of old bogan mingers, sums up cover bands.

You ****en watched that? Pathetic.

Now who asked you to reply in my thread..who's stalking who. Idiot.

Its Both they are crap and they dont play there own music, there is absolutley no musical credibility to what they are doing and they call themselfs musicians....
and dont even get me bloody started on the people that go to watch them.....

Again I ask how is that any different to a classical musician, hell how is it different to an actor? They don't write their own scripts either.

And last night a moment i'd been dreading in our cover band scene down here(where various ones inhabit a pub and what passes for a nightclub here most weekends) happened, Lips of an Angel, i dont think i need to say anymore!!:p

Cover bands: a bunch of no-talents leaching off the creativity other, infinitely superior players and taking up valuable stage space in venues across the nation and around the world....:thumbsd:

i think you will find that most people in cover bands are like carlos... they have to play songs that they don't enjoy playing, but that's what the crowds want, so that is what they play... it is unfortunate that they have to play crap for the mostpart, but that is the way it works...

it doesn't mean they're bad musicians, or have bad music taste...

hey they're just playing what morons want to hear. If there's a demand someone will supply.

They are selling out a little to be perfectly honest BUT no more than an artist or writer working in a call center.

Of course, its a massive compromise. It can be soul destroying in just as many ways as working a job you dont want to do can be.

But i doubt everyone loves every aspect of their job, regardless of what you do. And again, in this country, if you want to make a living from playing a musical instrument, it is often an regrettable part of it. Not everyone gets the big record deal unfortunately, and even most of those who do get backing from a label in this country still wont come close to earning a living from music.

And painting everyone with the same brush is a bit silly. I've met and played with some absolute top notch players at some covers gigs. Yeah, there are alot of bands full of wanna be rock stars who have very little grasp of their craft and will never be more than a coverband player. But there are also some extremely gifted players out there doing what they can to earn a buck who run rings around most players anyone wants to throw at me from the high moral ground.

And while yes, there are also a fair few who embarrass themselves in many respects and have no place calling themselves musicians, there is a definite level of professionalism required to put together a decent, entertaining show which flows and is tight, not to mention churning out 3 x 45 minute sets of the crap consisting of roughly 35 songs a night, 2 to 3 times a week.

Carlos, i would never criticise what you do. I have no doubt that i would rather make a (good) living from playing music (in a cover band or band) than working in an office.

In no way does being in a cover band reflect on your music capabilities. :thumbsu: :thumbsu:

INFACT it more or less proves you love your music. ;)

I wasnt just talking to you, but cheers.

I'll again stress it isnt the only musical involvement i've had. Christ, i'd have given the whole caper up long ago it all up if it was!

But it does often amuse me when the moralistic finger gets pointed. I've been involved in a fair few bands writing original music over the years and i remember when i was heaps younger i was one of the cats who slagged on coverbands for being sell outs and all that... that was until i got asked jokingly to do a covers gig for a friend of a friend and got told how much i;d be getting paid. Walked away with more money from that one gig than i'd earnt in my entire musical career to that point! Not to mention also kind of enjoying playing in front of a bloody big and enthusiastic crowd as opposed to 25 or so of my bands' mates!

People naturally (think they need to) seperate their art from career/work. Like an old stubborn man who doesn't like his veges and meet touching on his dinner plate. Which is why there aren't more happy wealthy people in this world...... As they say "do what you love and the money will follow" :thumbsu:

i think you can't just throw in tribute bands right along side cover bands... they are a different kettle of fish...

Not really a big fan of cover bands but I will go into bat for the Zep Boys - they are bloody good and if your a fan of Led Zeppelin, you should try and catch a show if they are in town. They don't try and look like them, but they definately sound like them.
