Cats vie for Hawk signing

Tuesday, September 30
Geelong Advertiser - ANDREW MEATH

GEELONG is not the highest bidder in the race to recruit Hawthorn forward Jade Rawlings, the Cats revealed yesterday.
The Kangaroos and Carlton are also vying for the services of Rawlings, who it is believed has been offered $1.1 million over three years by the Cats.

``Our offer is not the highest he has been offered compared to other clubs but we still hang in there,'' Cats chief executive Brian Cook said.

The Cats desperately need a marking forward but have distanced themselves from talk that Richmond spearhead Matthew Richardson and out-of-favour Collingwood forward Jarrod Molloy are also in their sights.

``Those two are not among our high priority group,'' Cook said.

``We have spoken to several other players and their managers though and now that Collingwood and Brisbane are finished we will speak to more.''

It is believed Geelong has offered Rawlings a three-year deal, while Hawthorn is reluctant to offer more than two.

``That's one consideration where we could have an advantage if we went three years,'' Cook said.

He said the Cats would seek a comprehensive medical examination of Rawlings ``if we get to the next stage with him''.

``You just do that these days with all players you offer a fairly big contract to.''

I heard a rumour that Luke Power wants more money and Brisbane cant afford it. Now if we were a smart club, we'd also try and get his brother, Sam Power from the Bulldogs, which might just help lure Luke down from the Lions.

Can't see a place for another 2 small running midfielders. Especially one with a rather healthy salary.

You don't think Luke Power would add anything to our side?? Didn't you notice how easilly the ball came out of our forward line whenever Kingsley, Mooney, Graham, McCarthy, etc etc. didn't take a mark?? We could use a quality rover in the forward line and Luke Power certainly is that, and can rotate in the middle as well.

Rawlings to Geelong according to the Sun and it could be official by the end of the day.

They cliam the trade will be our first round draft pick and a player. I thought we weren't giving up our first round pick at any cost!

Scouse, is this after we recruit Rawlings and pay for his taxi bill?

That would be the sensible thing to do, keep the pick I mean. There have been suggestions, and yes I'm serious when I state this: that Bartel and our first-round selection will be given up to secure Jade. Whether I think Jade is the answer or not, I would not give up a potential star, accompanied with one of the best youngsters in the land for a 27-year old with questionable knees.

Being realistic i dont think we are gonna get a key forward that could solve our problem without giving away our first picks or a really good player, whether Rawlings is the answer, only time will tell....

Nobody wants such a trade to occur, but you do have to give quality to get quality, however Hawthorn appear to have done a bloody good job in selling Rawlings, that's my opinion at least.

The whisper I heard was that Rawlings will be coming to Geelong in a 3 year deal worth $1 million dollars in exchange for our first round pick and preferably a taller player, as the Hawks have plenty of midfielders.

We just need to find someone to be Jade's chauffer. :D

As for giving up the draft pick, with this draft not being as strong as in previous seasons, if you're going to give up your first round draft pick, this year is probably the best year to do it. Also, with Mark Blake coming under the father-son rule, and hopefully Nathan Ablett as well, (fingers crossed) we wont have done too badly even without that number 7 pick.
