None.
No one.
Zilch.

The number is and should always be retired.

RIP Pants.

A more suitable question would be which current Collingwood player most resembles Millane and my answer would be Scott Burns.

We also need an option above that says number 42 should stay in retirement (unless it is completely approved by the Millane family).

I think the importance of numbers can be over-emphasized. Every number has its good players and its champions - and its absolute hacks. Sure, some supporters cringe when they see so-and-so wearing so-and-so's old jumper, but new players need a jumper to play in, may and well be number whatever. I liked the idea for number 42, or let someone grow into it.

The question of retiring numbers is an interesting one. Given that No 42 probably isn't needed any more leaving it retired to honour Darren Millane is not such a bad idea.

However there are other numbers that have significance. For example No 22. If it was retired though who would it honour? The incredibly gifted Bob Rose, a club champion with no peer, or Tony Shaw who rose above his limited ability to become the club's games record holder?

I think numbers with a history at the club, as a rule, should be given to players who have earned the right to wear them. It would be fitting if the player who earned distinction in that jumper, or his family, chose the one who should wear it or at least had a say in it.
