The Australian Taxation Office has launched an investigation into former Australian tennis star Jelena Dokic.

Dokic's tax problems emerged Monday as reason for her late withdrawal from this week's international women's tennis tournament in New Zealand and has put in doubt her appearance at the upcoming Australian Open in Melbourne.

Organisers of the Auckland classic were originally told the world No. 15 had "some details to sort out relating to her current personal situation".

"All I will say is there are a number of personal reasons. There are a whole raft of issues. Sadly, it all came to a head last week." Auckland tournament director Richard Palmer said.

A source within the ATO said Dokic's situation is similar to former world No. 1 Steffi Graf, whose father, Peter, was jailed in Germany for tax evasion.

I think damir Dokic is good for tennis. After all he's a character. Jelena should never play for this country again although i would love to see her win a grand slam. I think she's a brat and maybe she should take a page out of the philippousis book. It looked like he was going to turn his back on playing for australia but instead he has won 2 davis cup titles since.

Damir is great for tennis, I hope he comes back to Oz.

He sure rattled the tennis establishment and brought character into the often monotoned austere facade that most tennis professionals and coaches put up.

He also exposed racism and stereotypes in the media who often crucified him for behaviour that they themselves often refer to jovially as "Aussie larikinism" when it suits them.

He was certainly right. Food prices at sporting events is pure extortion. I always take my own food, plus I nick all of Bomber Spirits Vanilla Coke.
