Taken at No.36 in the NAB AFL Rookie Draft, Daniel Archer impressed
Saints scouts with his ferocious attack at the ball and extremely strong marking ability
(averaged 6 marks per game for Tasmania in the Under 18 Championships).
Played cricket as a junior, and took up footy a bit later, so his skills are still quite raw,
but the signs are looking positive for the strongly built teenager, showing that he could
possibly play as a "swingman", playing both at centre half forward and centre half back
in his 5 games for Tassie, although he also had short stints at both Full Forward and Ruck.
Tries his guts out on every occasion, he lead the Tasmanian team in both goals and
contested marks in the U/18 championships. Cops a lot of flack about his hair.

Was also a Carlton supporter, so there's definitely something we need to fix there.

Ugh, i'll never forgive myself quoting Francis Leach, but he seems to think that Darch has been elevated to the senior list.

St Kilda has elevated Tasmanian Daniel Archer to its primary list after impressive pre-season form, and the ruck-forward is likely to play against Geelong tomorrow night. With Justin Koschitzke unlikely to play and Michael Gardiner on the long-term injury list, the 19-year-old Archer has seized his opportunities.

At just 19 years of age and a game of AFL football already under his belt, Daniel Archer is an exciting prospect for the St Kilda Football Club.

Weighing in at 98kg and standing at 193cm, the tall Tasmanian recruit was this season elevated to the Saints senior list after turning heads over the pre-season.

The key tall said he attributes his promotion to the senior list and making his AFL debut, to a long and beneficial pre-season.

With his family in attendance at his first senior AFL game, Archer said the occasion was a special one.

“It was very exciting and it was great to have my family there.”

“The MCG is a big stage and the atmosphere was much greater than the NAB Cup. The pace of the game was also much quicker and I definitely enjoyed it,” said Archer.

The budding tall forward mentioned that Justin Koschitzke has been a great mentor for him since he arrived at the Club and said the fellow big forward is someone that he often seeks guidance from.

“I’ve had a couple of really good chats with Kosi, which I think have been beneficial to my footy,” he said.

“He has told me a bit about his journey and given me some really handy advice,” said Archer.

As for the rest of Season 2011, Archer outlined that he aims to be a consistent performer and will keep pushing his case for senior selection.

“I want to play good football in the VFL and look to be recognised for doing the right things” he said.

All in all, Archer is a great up and coming talent for the Saints and has shown great development. He no doubt promises to be a player of the future who can throw his weight around and present up forward. Watch this space!

#42 Daniel Archer

After 9 VFL games and 9 VFL reserves games in his first year (2010), 2011 saw "Darch" debut in round 2 against Richmond.

8 possessions, 4 marks, 2 tackles and 2 inside 50s was a solid effort - with a strong tackle leading to a free kick an goal (to Riewoldt!) for a deliberate rushed behind. A late shot on goal from 50m (which could have been the match winner) faded with a strong cross wind for a point.

Unfortunately the club saw Archer as more of a backup ruck option, rather than the key forward that he was recruited for.

At 19yo and 193cm, this was always going to be a big ask.

In his 15 games in the VFL this year, Archer was named in the best players 3 times.

His form waned and, in seeking to further develop Tommy Walsh as a ruck option (along Zeb ruckmen Dore and Orr returning from injury), Archer was thrown to full back. His strength and pace were good assets in this role, and he ran the season out well.

Reports have Archer doing plenty of hard yards in the off-season, and I for one look forward to him developing further and having an impact in 2012.

Daniel Archer #42

After being on tenderhooks last year, Arch was sighted doing the hard yards during the player’s break.

He was rewarded with a further rookie contract, with the Saints saying at the time “Tom Curren, Daniel Archer, Jackson Ferguson and Warrick Andreoli are all really exciting prospects. We are impressed by their progress and feel they can develop into important players for this Football Club.”

Unfortunately he did a hamstring and - upon returning - proceeded to break his jaw in a practice match at Sandringham.

But he managed to play 18 games for the Zebs this year and kicked 30 goals (equal 10th in the VFL goalkicking with Khan Haretuku).

Arch was certainly capable of freak acts, particularly with his kicking for goal from tight angles. I’ve remarked that, in kicking for goal, he reminds me of a St Kilda forward of similar proportions (but unhappily, that was where the comparison ended). 30 goals 15 behinds for the season was some indication.

And two of his better performances - 3 goals/13 possessions/5 marks and 1 goal/15 possessions/8 marks - came against the filth, so he gets a tick from me there.

It is a real shame for him (and St Kilda) that the Zebs recruited Beau Dowler - as he has had a very good season and most likely stopped Sandringham from trying Archer in the full back role (an area of weakness on the Saints list).

His booming kick, bulk, and decent straight line speed (he ran a sub 3sec 20m at draft camp) would have served him well in the role. As a forward, he hasn’t tended to be a one-grab mark and isn’t the most nimble when it comes to lateral movement. And averaging 10 possessions a game (along with 3.3 marks and 1.8 tackles) wasn’t going to see him challenge for an AFL spot.

But he was always willing to put his body on the line (including as an undersized ruckman), and his bullocking work was obviously highly valued.

It will certainly be interesting times in his household at the moment (shared with Nick Winmar and Tom Ledger).

An AFL team looking for a full back could do worse, although I could also see him kicking goals in a state league somewhere.

And who knows, there’s been other tall players picked up after an initial stint on an AFL list - Haretuku will probably be one of those this year - noting Arch is yet to turn 21.
