Data usage on Telstra

How the hell did this happen? $49 cap on Telstra, 1GB of data available.

On Thursday I had used 6%. By last night I had used 91%:eek::eek::eek:

There is surely no way that I could have downloaded 800 and something MB through my phone without even knowing.

Unless my mates have pulled a prank without telling me than I am totally unaware of how this can happen.

Is it worth contacting Telstra?
Cheers

It's worth looking up your usage history on the telstra website before making a post too.

Yeah sorry about that, I found the culprit, a 505 MB file in one hit. Didn't even know phones were capable of downloading something like that, especially when I only use it for Facebook, Email and occasionally BigFooty.

Is there any way to see what was actually downloaded? I'd love to get to the bottom of this.

Well I've eventually found the cause of the problem by investigating a bit deeper with times of download etc. Turns out when I did a 10 minute voice record on my phone and tried to email it back to my computer, it kept repeatedly trying to send but was stuck in my outbox the whole time, used a shitload of MB's. Never doing that again, a rookie mistake on my behalf.

Sorry for making this thread Borgsta.

Dont think there is a way to see it?

I have just signed up to Telstra, was on 1gb but went way over that for my first bill (not helped by pro-rata) so bumped it up to 2gb but already in about 4 days ive used 25%... would like to know how its happened.

If you haven't already tried this thing mate then give it a whirl, it's about the most detail you can get.

Basic stuff you text "Use" to 176 which is why I was so shocked when it was 91%.

Thanks for that, I had tried to go to that part of the site but didn't realise I had to add a service to get the information. Have done it now and its good (still no data info for the last 2 days though..)

I've found out why I have used so much data, at 09:21 AM last Thursday it used 438MB (duration 32mins) although I was working at that time so I have no idea how that could have happened? Will keep an eye on it.

Btw I think Telstra should update their website: "SMS or email notices are typically current as of 6 hours ago". Not true for me so far...

Other than that im enjoying Telstra.

How have you already used 25%? The cycle is ending soon and ive used 8% and I use the net like an addict

you might not have used it, when exactly did you join telstra? their cycles are the same for everyone. so if you join in the last week of the cycle they adjust your usage. For example when I joined there was a week to go and the first day i was 80% of 2 gig.

Also if you find an unusual session I would contest it if it doesn't make sense. 500mb in one hit doesn't make sense. When I was with vodafone (you might have read my issue in the other thread) they claimed I used 1.3 gig in one day. I got a reference number from he TIO and Vodafone immediately waived those charges. I would call Telstra first, if they font completely convince you with solid proof that you did use that much I would let them know I would be calling the TIO. They then become more helpful. Whenever the TIO is mentioned mass emails are sent. They don't want the fine they get.

Now Telstra are texting me saying that I've used 133% since Sunday night even though I've had every form of data connection turned off on my phone to the point that I can't even make calls - I try calling the customer service line and it just drops out. Annoyed customer.

Cheers Zim Zum, will give that a go. Surely a 6 minute voice recording can't be nearly 800mb. Doesn't add up!

Hey gibbsy,

Telstra meters both their uploads and downloads in that 1GB. So if you voice recording repeatedly tried to send to your email, and it got to the end and then for whatever reason restarted, this is definitely a possibility.

176 'use' is the most accurate form of checking your data, and m.bigpond.com/myaccount is accurate up to 48hrs ago.

Cheers for that Ben. I eventually got through to customer service and thankfully they agreed to waive the fee and remove the two big downloads (of 500 and 400 MB respectively) from the bill. Still says 145% used on the website though.

Still not entirely convinced that it was the voice recording as the reported download/upload started at 8:30 in the morning and I didn't try to send the voice recording until 1:30 in the arvo.
