Debt collectors

Just got a call, googled the number and it was from a debt collector.

Anyone knows what happens if I live in blissful ignorance of the fact they are trying to call me?

Actually have one trying to contact me at the moment.

My vodafone contract ended a year ago, I paid the final bill, they refunded it a week later. I have had nothing from them for a year, a debt collectors letter rocked up in the mail on Monday.

When I answer the phone its gonna be a ****ing shit storm. They have ****ed my credit rating for their bullshit mistake.

I was getting calls from a debt collector for a while... I googled the number to find out what it was and I ignored the calls for the first while...

Then they started ringing fairly constantly, so one time I answered -

RJ: "Hello?"
DC: "Hi, is this radiojake?"
RJ: "Uhh, who is speaking?"
DC: "Hi, my name is Debt Collector, I'm ringing about a debt repayment, is this radiojake?"
RJ: "No sorry, you must have the wrong phone number"
DC: "No worries, sorry about that, we won't bother you again"

And they haven't -

Vodafone have serious form with this, they did the same thing to me. My employer was paying the bills, contract ran out, work put me on their preferred provider all payments up to date then I get a call and SMS 8 months later from a debt collector representing Vodafone. I explained the situation to them and she told me this happens all the time with Vodafone.

Rang Vodafone who were rude at the start and only after they tried to look up the file and realised the mistake then the apologies came. I raised hell made a formal complaint to the Telecommunications Ombudsman who informed me they would take action. Not sure what happened then, think they fined them.

Yeah its not the first time I have had an issue with Vodafone, had the Ombudsman onto them once before, looks like I will be doing so again.

I've put the ombudsman onto them before as well.

For the record they can only wreck your credit rating if them lodge an action against you which was cost them about $500

I tried to ignore debt collectors in the past and basically it was a terrible decision.
If you owe money call the company and try work to a solution, if you don't owe money, call the company and work to a solution.
It never ends well and they never let up, it really isn't worth all the stress they bring with them. In my experience, if I had my time again, I would have spoken to the company instead of ignoring the debt collectors calls.

I may take your advice.

Are you suggesting I ring the company and sort it out with them rather than ring the debt collectors?

From what I understand the debt collectors just want your money and don't care. If you call the company and explain your situation they make work out a payment plan. (For me that worked, but I am sure the circumstances are different for everyone).
The company just want their money, so if you call and be honest they *may* be willing to work with you, the new terms may be a hell of a lot stricter than what they originally were though.
Not answering to the debt collectors doesn't help though and they can help out with payment plans too.
Basically talking to them (company and debt collector) and they may be more understanding than you think.

If it's already been passed on to a debt collection agency, it's probably beyond the point where you can work out a payment plan with the company. Better to try doing that with the collection agency.

Not sure how, but I managed it. Maybe because it had only just gone through to them and they reversed it? I had a financial counsellor (which is free) and they helped me out a lot as I was up that creek without a paddle.
