Well it is apparent our back line is not up the standard. Furthermore our midfield lacks a defensive side. Let's evaluate the back half and midfield from today.

Will Thursfield - Played his last game for the Richmond Football Club today, was outmarked by much smaller opponents. (However happy McGuane was dropped because a message needed to be sent. He will be straight back in though).

Jake Batchelor - 19 year old shown he can punch has reasonable size but MISSING TACKLES too often.

Bachar Houli - For 2 weeks now when opposition have tackled in backline he has coughed up the ball time and time again. Carrazzo goal in first quarter what a handball that was from him and 3 or 4 occasions last week. Not a backmans arseh*le cant handle pressure and despite his reasonable rebound atm is no where near good enough.

Chris Newman - He actually can defend

Jayden Post - Made to look a fool today outmarked by Garlett and Waite made look dumb. LONG way to go and dont think backline is his thing.

Alex Rance - The definition of backman our best.

MIDFIELD

Trent Cotchin - Serious weapon in around contest and when going forward but doesn't tackle overly well in the pack and lets man run off.

Brett Deledio - All his time back there has him in good stead

Nathan Foley - Only a slight man and gives his all however need to run harder defensively

Dustin Martin - Tough kid, doesn't lay brutal tackles though does he and he must learn to do so.

Shaun Grigg - I yi yi his lack of respect for opponent is concerning

Shane Edwards - For a man his size does the defensive things well, chases etc

Daniel Jackson - Yeah knows how to tackle if in grasp does make it stick but stop kicking the ball you aint good at it.

So the bottom line is until these names above either go or realise its a 2 way game we are going to continue to suffer against the top teams that run there arses off.

We know the backline is shit though, the coaches would know that and even the defenders themselves probably know it. My frustration is after knowing this our game plan and our midfield leave these guys open to constant pressure... there is little help from the mids pushing back quickly and the clearances have been an issue all year long and the coaches are yet to fix it... so why not admit it's likely to be heading the other way and have a good reader of the play like Newman filling holes? I don't catch a lot of games live but we rarely seem to be putting an extra man back but our play seems to indicate we should be doing it until we fix other areas.

Daniel Connors (quad) 1 week --- need him fit and firing in back line to release Deledio to midfield/hf
Matthew White (knee) 2-3 weeks. --- also need his speed and stamina
Conca --- needs 2-3 weeks off to freshen up body - is in best 22
Taylor - commit and give us an x-factor up forward

Defense

These 3 are in there with McGuane & Thurstfield to be replaced
Kel Moore (hip) TBA --- need his experience
Dylan Grimes (hamstring) TBA --- need his enthusiasm and grunt
David Astbury (dislocated kneecap) TBA --- need him to gain experience and see if he can cut it. Will not beat best forward but may handle 3rd easily
Tom Derickx (ankle fracture) TBA --- need his maturity ATM with Graham struggling and Browne needing easily 2-3 years of game time


We do not have an experienced mature list...too few are relied on...who are carrying others band can not be expected to play blinds week in/out...

Damon is on the right track...

Personally, McGuane/Thurstfield will not be around next year...the are another 3 that I will be happy to name but will wait until end of season.

yea if we get him then cool. if not then cool im not overly fussed.
I would like us to try and get Talia from the crows somehow. even a 3rd rounder. if we get them both fantastic.

If we delist Thursty and Mcguane these are the 2 players id like to see come in.

And finally I think Astbury is more of a forward than a backman. And Post is more of a Backman than a ruck or forward.

Post, Trengrove, Talia, Moore, Rance, Grimes not a bad list of talls.

I could have kicked 6 in the Carlton forward line today.
It came in quickly, it was open, the defence was spread...they had no chance.

I have included the midfield in the OP stating defensively they aren't doing enough. So is there any youth coming through that could get this job done? I don't see it, maybe we need to start using a more defensive game plan

Arguably the worst defensive 6 in the AFL........compounded by an unaccountable midfield. We allow to many Inside 50's and struggle to sucessfully rebound.

Our 3 HB's in Deledio, Newman and Houli are all too offensive. Lids is O.K in the air and Newman and Houli are O.K when the ball is on the ground. Apart from that they are mainly there to drive the ball from the 50. Ideally only 2 should be playing there and that would be with a fully capable defense.

Don't get me started on our horrible midfield defensive pressure...

Since moore has been injured he has suddenly become a gun chb ffs hes a solid third tall defender at best wouldnt rate him much higher than thursfied.

THis isnt a bad thing dude. The bad thing is when you have HBs like that, its imperative that you have HF targets. Even if they dont take marks, its about contesting. We had JS in this game and the ball would sail over that trios heads time and time again. What use is an offensive HB line when you havent got an offence for them to kick to? The tanker's HBs were partying and their running defenders were doing the irish jig each time.
I know there are alot here who bag Miller's inclusion, but his ommision left us with nothing, but short people.

Agree Goldy, he is a natrual winger to me (then again we seem to have about 30 wingers on our list). I wonder whether Dimma is leaving him there to try and teach him how to be defensive?
