remember round 1 last year??

a certain mark johnson for fremantle was picked ahead of a young gun.
during the following week the coach copped it in the media for picking a 30 year old has been over a clearly faster, more skillful and better player.

at selection the coach obliged by bringing in the kid in round 2.

the kid then went onto to become the best young player in the country for the year and won the rising star award. the kid made mark harvey look silly for not choosing him for round 1. the kid was Rhys Palmer.

the deja vu is that we chose a b johnson/toovey/o'bree for round 1 this year, thus leaving out the more talented beams/sidebottom/mccarthy.

geez i hope it truly is deja vu and that one of those kids come in this week and really tear it up and prove they belong and should've been in from round 1.

oh yeah and if they also go on and win the rising star, that'll be a bonus!

No doubt I agree that Johnson and Toovey should not have been selected.

However, O'Bree is still useful. 28 possessions, he can still find the footy and is a good rotating midfielder.

This week we should see both of those two hacks dropped.

However, keep in mind, Freo went young round 1 this year and got smashed by the Dogs.

Obree was one of our best! He is a very under rated player and his experience and input is very important on such a young midfield. Toovey is a dud, His skills are nowhere near good enough. He just looks akward. Hopefully common sense prevails, and Shaw can come back in for Toovey, then we can bring in Beams for Johnson. Whats the deal with Reid?

when was the last time that we didn't debut a player (either AFL or Club debut) in a round 1 fixture?
2008 - nathan brown, cameron wood
2007 - paul medhurst
2006 - dale thomas
2005 - ?

anybody know?

Do people seriously see O'Bree as in our worst 3 players that play in the seniors? This is ridiculous. He was one of the only player on Saturday to be getting in and getting the ball out for us and we smashed Adelaide in the clearances. He is integral. He is quite rightly a part of the leadership group and he wont be dropped unless he gets injured this year.

O'Bree has his up's and down's like most players, but when it was needed on the w'end, he, Pendles and Swan got us going. But I agree with first post and get Beams and/or Sidey in there. Toovey has proven that he's not quite up to it, apologies to the young man but it's cut throat. Another player I though left a bit out there was Ben Reid, not much second effort and not a lot of chasing done by him off the ball. Maybe I missed a bit of his work rate, but he didn't look to be up to the rigors of 4 quarters....

just my $0.02

im happy someone sees what i see! at least we were at the same game!

I was thinking the same thing also roles reversed from the EF last year when they played the older players and we played kids in Dawes,McCarthy and etc
