I lost about 10 kilos late last year. What I did was pretty simple: I just stuck to eating three basic meals a day (I still have plenty of junk food) and NEVER snacking or nibbling between meals.

Previously, I'd often had a bowl of cereal late at night just before I went to bed but once I cut this out, I began to lose the kilos.

I did excercise by walking each day, but I got sick of it and my giving up on the exercise hasn't affected me negatively so far.

Ive been semi-dieting since i returned from Melbourne(start of Feb) and I think ive actually put on the weight! It really ****es me! I do TaeBoxing Monday and Friday nights, for 1 hour and it is pretty full on, i never eat dinner afterwards though, because the exercise is pointless, and I drink about 4-5 litres of water a day, can someone please tell me why my weights gone up? :(

Carbohydrates are bad if you have them late in the day, as you won't burn them off. You might as well be eating a bucket of lard. :D
No surprise that you lost weight once you stopped this.

Walking is a good way to lose weight without the high impact on joints that running or aerobics can have. I have chronic shin problems meaning I basically can't run, especially not on hard surfaces. Cycling/exercise bikes are also good no-impact aerobic exercise.

Eating as little fat as possible is a great start. Then what rohan said. As for cutting out carbo hydrates, I really don't agree with that. Eating 6 small meals a day is better than having three large ones.

Muscle weighs more than fat. Throw away the scales, they are a false indication of how you are going, look at your clothes. Are they tighter or loose? Getting a body fat analysis is better than weighing yourself.

Ooooh, yeah ... some tough love from The Butcher.

As much as I hate to say this ... The Butcher is right on the money this time.

KFC, Maccas, Hungry Jacks .... forget it !

The trick is to ALWAYS go for the low-fat option.

If you have milk in your tea, use LOW FAT milk.

If you like ice-cream, use LOW FAT ice-cream.

Yoghurt is great stuff ... and it's possible to get excellent tasting yoghurt that has practially no fat at all.

Get in the habit of reading the labels on the food you buy from the supermarket ... check the fat content per 100g ... and make a few comparisons. You'd be amazed.

As well as drastically cutting down on your fat intake ... you need to increase your intake of fruit and vegetables. You need to eat at least three pieces of fruit every day and you need to have at least three serves of vegetables per day .... EVERY DAY ... no exceptions.

If you're doing it right, you will probably find that you actually eat more than you did before. It's not how much you eat ... it's WHAT you eat that counts.

And make sure you drink 8 glasses of water every day ... Not soft drink or coffee ... I mean H2O ... WATER.

As for the walking ... it's the best exercise you can get. So stop making excuses and get off your fat arse. If you REALLY can't walk, then swim ... or have lots of sex ... ANYTHING ... as long as you're not just sitting around doing nothing all day.

And, yes ... before we get all the Fat Alfred remarks ... I am speaking from experience. I put on a stack of weight last year because I got lazy and careless with my eating. But I've turned it round since New Year. I started the year on a very tubby 87 kg ... I'm now 82 kg ... and I'm aiming to get down to 75 kg by the end of the year.

I'm not really interested in muscle ... A few years ago I did weights for a while for a play that I was in. I looked a million bucks while the play was on ... but as soon as I stopped doing the weights I went flabby. So, unless you're a footballer, or you're prepared to do weights for the rest of your life, forget it.

No you'd be better off not eating fat or drinking piss.

Fat contains over twice the amount of energy as carbohydrates and so does grog.

Perhaps taking me a bit too literally M29. :o The point is though, that unused carbohydrate DOES turn to fat, so having a high-carb meal late at night is usually a bad idea.

And yes, fat and grog :( are the first things that should be eliminated.

I don't know about alcohol. Some people say you gain weight when you drink it but the other night I proved you don't.

I went out and got ******ed and in the morning I checked my weight. Much to my suprise I had lost 1kg and this is not the first time it has occured.

Maybe that's just the fluid you lose? Alcohol dehydrates you. It would be a better indication if you waited a day before weighing yourself.

I'm currently reading a book on eating foods based around your blood type. The theory behind it is that each blood type indicates how your body handles different food types, and there are certain weaknessess in your body depending on blood type.

...

Yeah, I've seen that, they had it in Malvern at this hydrotherapy place I visited for some "cleaning". The lady there said it was worthwhile, and I flicked through the pages. Not sure of the title though.

Just want to add that this has been a great thread, and everyone has provided great info (no trolls). I think protein shakes (with H20 of course) are helpful cos I find it hard to eat 5-6 meals a day without feeling like a pig, and cos I don't eat meat or drink milk, I need the protein one way or another.

Sure that's not bulimia?

You didn't have one of your technicolour yawns, did you?

In my case I am trying to put on a bit of weight. So taking that logic, should I have late night carbohydrates?

Carbos are mainly for energy whereas Protein is for muscle repair. What Darky is refering to is when you have a excess of carbohydrates that are un-used. These excess carbohydrates aren't used as a energy source and turn to fat unless you burn them off.

I don't perscribe to eating certain foods in the night. I always have 3 square meals and try to drink lots of water.

If you want to get cut up and add weight then protein sources such as Fish, Steak, Chicken and protein powders are the best bet.

Depends on the carbs. A peice of fruit wont hurt. Something like a bowl of pasta isn't the best idea though.

Look for a Glycemic Index chart and you will see what I mean.

Sorry sly, that book has been slammed by nutritionists and Dr's in the press. It's like telling people with a certain hair colour or eye colour that they should eat certain foods and as such, is tripe.

The theory centers around the development of each type. Type O blood was the type of early man who mainly ate meat.

Anthropologists have disputed this and have produced considerable evidence that all four types were present at the same time. On top of this obvious difficulty is the reality that there are well over 400 blood types found in human beings.

Aerobic activities such as walking, running, cycling and swimming all facilitate fat burning. This is because the heart is worked to such a degree that it burns fat and is normally 60 to 70% of your maximum heart rate.

That's the key. My year 12 PE teacher is an ex-personal trainer, and we have just done work on the three energy systems of the body (creatine-phosphate, anaerobic glycolytic, and aerobic glycolytic), and it's at what intensity you do your exercise that dictates what happens.

You want to be using your aerobic system at less than 85% of your maximum heart rate (measure that by 220 - your age) to start using your fat for energy, not glycogin.

That's the most efficient and best way to lose weight, but as Rohan said, "it all relates to how many calories you take in and how many calories you burn. If you burn more than you take in you will lose weight."

The Hitman

By the way, the reason you want to be going at a submaximal intensity is because if you go flat out, the body will use the glycogen stores first. If you aren't going flat out, then they will use the fat stores. Once you use all your glycogen stores, then your body uses fat.

I'm about to go and run 10 laps, but I'm going to go at around 75% pace to ensure I get the most out of it.

"eat right for your type" by Dr Peter J D'Adamo

google threads report that he is NOT actually a doctor (ie. MD) but a naturopath. he has a website too <http://www.dadamo.com/>

most of what i read tend to denounce his assertions.

That's one of the books yes. This "fad" was introduced to the yanks by him in 1998 and some others have cashed in on it. It's a waste of time and laughable to think it'd work.

And one very important note - do not cut out dairy products altogether. As Alf said, go for the low fat options. Besides the well known uses of the Calcium found in dairy (ie bone strength/density etc), Calcium also inhibits a hormone in the body that absorbs fat.

So if you cut out all your high Calcium foods, you are actually letting you body absorb more fat, than if you just cut down to the High Calcium/low fat dairy foods.

Gawd all the conflicting info can be hard to wade thru tho. I think I am going to give up on all the do's and don'ts food wise, go back to my old strategy which worked very very well for many years. Eat and drink whatever the hell I want, Just make sure I excercise - ie walking or a Dance Class or 2 every week. Lucky for me it seems to be working already.
