Marshmallow Des is lucky he wasn't playing in the seventies.
Are you saying that telling a player "I ****ed your 6 year old kid" was commonplace in the seventies?

I can tell it wasn't.

My old man and an uncle are life members of WAFL clubs and I can tell you (cos they've told me), that comments like that are, and always were taboo!

Don't pretend to be all "old school" when you don't have a fricken clue.

The Dockers had better sides in relation to talent in RDs 1 & 2 but currently they are confused about being "tough and hard".

it isn't scragging & fighting, giving away free kicks and 50m's and also getting reported.

it is playing selfless footy, Sacrificing your game for the team, following a game plan, running hard to cover oponents, shepperding, blocking, doing gut busting running- this sounds very much like playing in a team and its always all about the team.

Those 9 wins in a row were about team footy

Des is a professional footballer on big bucks, he was sucked in & has cost the club dearly.
I’m sure our Josh would never say anything like that:rolleyes:

100% agree.

Because there is no proof Josh has made obsene remarks about a players family member.

People on here are seriously naive if they think that anyone would not have reacted in the same way as Headland if a onbscene remark about their family was made.

Dom's post (post#11 on this thread) was right on the money, assuming that what has been alledgedly said was true.

Did des really go over to shake his hand or actually to start some more shit? Looked to me like he was pointing at him to back away or something, not shake his hand?

See I dont entirely agree...

Can you imagine some of the things J Carr would say to opposition players? Players like people need to be able to restrain from violent acts unless attacked themselves.

Selwood's comments are disgraceful if the rumors are true..Though that doesnt mean headland and loose the plot like he allegedly did.

I agree with sabre. I feel dirty.

Why people cannot understand that while what Selwood (allegedly) said was in bad taste, it doesn't excuse Headland for going troppo, and it isn't the first or last time this sort of comment will be made on a footy field, is beyond me...

Johnson and Matt Carr to a lesser extent.
Both of these were in play. Johnson's suspensions will have to go down as one of the all-time travesties of AFL justice. There were two or three bumps on Hasleby alone from Saturday than were worse than Jonno's.

I agree with the others. Just stupid. Maybe that's why we also play dumb football.

This is exactly what is most annoying and disturbing atm.

Halfwits inferring that these kinds of sledges are commonplace on a footy field.

THEY ARE NOT!

Complete morons who've probably never played footy as an adult, suggesting that other sledgers like the Carr Boys, Voss and Warnie even, would think nothing of a comment like this.

THEY DO NOT/WOULD NOT MAKE THESE TYPES OF COMMENTS!

16 year old boys on this site claiming that it's all OK, that everything is allowed to get an edge in proffessional sport need to learn this...

AS AN ADULT, IT IS NOT OK TO MAKE SEXUAL/PAEDOPHILIAC COMMENTS ABOUT ANOTHER MANS CHILD!

Des was out there to shake all the other West Coast players after the game. When Des approached Selwood to shake hands, apparently Selwood aked Des if he needed a lift to the AFL tribunal. Thats when Des snaped again.

My wife, non-footy follower, and when I filled her in on the story she said something along the lines of "If someone at her work said that to her, they'd be sacked."

In this way the comments are similar to racial vilification in that the AFL is responsible for the environment that the player play in, and their reaction is part of defining acceptable behaviour on the playing field. Will be interesting to see where it goes.

I think Headland's appeal will get a sympathetic hearing.

Of course it is not. Just like it's not oK to break the rules about drugs, or off the ball contact to gain a competitive advantage.
but players will break the rules.

With headland showing how effective that underhanded sledge can be, it will be in the minds of a few other players who already bend the rules a little that this tactic will work.

I hope that Freo take time with Des to sort his head out so that such gamesmanship is not so effective against him. He has allowed a stupid comment to get in the way of his, and his team's focus- winning games of football.

It is one thing to play with heart and passion, but there needs to be a bit of the brain involved as well. When we get that balance right, we will be more disciplined and ruthless as an outfit. That is when we will be a genuine premiership threat.

Not if the AFL have the courage to deal with it in the same way the did racial vilification, and decalre that sexual references to children is NOT a ligitimate part of playing football.

I dont think we can put our head's in the sand any longer regarding the discipline problems at our club (I am talking on field here)

Farmer, Headland, Solomon and J Carr all leaders at the club, all out of control.

Johnson and Matt Carr to a lesser extent.

No other club has anywhere near the suspension list we have, and while we get a rough run at the tribunal, the blame in the majority rests at the club.

To make matters worse this kind of behaviour isnt winning us games..Its costing us games.

Sabre is just so right. We were once regarded as soft, we had to toughen up, so we did, we became the biggest sledges, we push, we shove, we niggle. Is that tough, are they real men?? No they're the wooses. The real men in football are the Shaunies, Cookies, Solomons and Josh Carrs. They are the men who are prepared to put their body on the line, they dive into the pack (not on top of it), they take the contested mark even when someone's bearing down on them. They tackle HARD and bring the player to the ground. They put the pressure on and chase even if they don't catch them they force a misskick and turnover. A friend of mine loves playing against the players above (Josh Mmmmmm) because you know you have a contest, it's a mutual respect thing, it's what football is about.
We have to get the right mindset and play good hard football, nothing more nothing less. Stay focussed.

Selwood must have been provoked to have said something like that and we all know the fremantle players have a discipline problem and if they can dish it out they must be prepared to take some
