In the original comics, Spiderman's web was made from goo which he manufactured in his secret spider laboratory. Then it was shot from a mechanical device incorporated in his costume.
Somewhat different in the movie. In the movie, the web is a natural product of his body. That's pretty freakin' gross. I cannot think of any fluid produced by the body that should be dripped about in public.
Think of the metaphor. We have a man jumping from building to building shooting his biological fluids everywhere he goes.
However, this "release" comes from his hand.
He is afraid to talk to girls.
I think what we have is a subliminal public service message from Marvel Comics Inc. TM. And it goes thusly:
If you spend your day reading comics, and daydreaming about saving the world, you will never talk to any girls, and all of your fantasy release will come through your hand. Hmm.
